Hay bales are fine but I really need to find a spot stump shoot. Unfortunately, I have a high school to my right, an intermediate school to my back, a mall in front of me, and houses everywhere else. Can anybody suggest good spots I can stump shoot in Southern California? I'm willing to go as far as San Diego and Los Angeles if need be.
Most of SoCal is Nat Forest so have at it.

Just head due east into the upper Cleveland National Forest. Once in the forest as long as you are off the roads you should be fine, though I am not familiar with that area.

The Cleveland NF has lots of open land but much of it is straight up and down or very heavily brushed. Personally, I'd go for the Los Padres NF, the San Bernardino NF, or the East Mojave.
If you go to the national forests keep in mind that you have to have an Adventure Pass on your vehicle (that's why I don't go to them). I'd go for the East Mojave.

Grey, according to Google, East Mojave is the 'East Mojave Preserve' and is almost 4 hours from us. Am I looking at the right place or am I totally off?
No, you're right. That's the only down side, it's a drive to get out there.

Do you hunt? If so consider stumping as scouting. I do that all the time. I used to hunt the southern Cleveland in San Diego. Now Los Padres up and down the coast and the Angeles as well.
I move slowly in to check new areas, and stump my way out. Plus them hills are great to keep those errant shots from hauling off to "not gonna find me" land and getting into good shape...
Wowzers. If I'm reading it right, the passes you mentioned are only $5, which makes it worth it.

$5 per day, or $30 or so per year.
It is a sore subject for many as it was supposed to be temporary but is still here.
We have a great 3D range set up year around. We meet every sunday to shoot. We are located by lake Henshaw (San Diego Mountians) as a member you can shoot it just about any time. Also right next to the Nat Forest. Alot of options give us a yell......
Zbearclaw has the prices right. I object most strongly to the whole thing and that is why my activities in local national forests have pretty much ended.

I am lucky to be away from the areas where the pass is required everywhere, but occasionally have to deal with it for the recreation areas and camping with the kids.
Kinda funny, pay for a pass and pay to camp, pretty good racket...
But until we can get it changed it is pay to play in your own yard (public land) and the ticket is much bigger than the cost of the pass.
But, get out there, shoot some stumps and start hunting, after all it is your land
