So I'm going to be looking for a new or new to me bow at Denton. I like the looks of the Shrew recurves but haven't had the chance to shoot any. What are some of the other quality makers out there with similar designs that I should look for also? Are there any that are good quality but with a smaller price tag :scared: than the Shrews?
John M's Knat/Griffen comes to mind, though each has its differences....
John was at Denton last year. I'm hearing it is more of a hobby now for him....
oops, didn't see the "recurves" part..... my bad.
I'm not opposed to trying longbows, it's just that I've been shooting a recurve and will probably stick with one. The "right" longbow could change my mind though.
Nope. Nothing like a Shrew.....
didn't notice you were from Greene.... Used to hunt at a camp/home there years back. I do miss the place a bunch. Don't know if the name Reed Adams means anything to you, but he was a pretty prominent fellow in the community - it was his "farm" off of what is now called Buckley Hollow....
A longbow thats alot like the Shrew is the kanati and it is a excellent well made hunting bow . The grips are close to the same but I like the kanati grip better . For recurve look at Hoots bows , they are a simuliar design to the Shrew and are very nice also .
Mike
Anneewakee recurve and the Hoots recurve look similar to the Shrew recurves.I think you were talking recurves not longbows.Anneewakee is in the sponsers classifieds if you want to take a look.
If I were you, I would catch up with Jim Reynolds of Thunderstick bows. He does beautiful work, his bows perform on a par with the Shrew, and the prices are way easier on the budget. Wait time is shorter, too. I have owned bows from both and to my eye and hand, the Thunderstick is tops.
BobW- Reed Adams doesn't ring a bell but I'm very familiar with Buckley Hollow.
BRITTMAN, Steelhead, huntryx- Thanks, I'll check those out.
HOOTS!

That is an awesome looking bow. What are the woods in the riser?
Hey, you three New Yorkers should check out the shoot my club is putting on next month. OXTAR thread in Trad Events.
I would not buy any bow without shooting it first. The Shrew is top notch if it fits you well. Only you can decide that.
TROY HEDLAND'S TALL HUNTER IS ANOTHER HYBRID TO CHECK OUT. FINE BOW AND CRAFTSMANSHIP. HIS TRAD GANG HANDLE IS 7EYES. ALSO IROQUOIS BOWS ARE GREAT VALUES AND PERFORM WITH THE BEST OF THEM. BOWYER IS BILL WARREN, PECKERWOOD HERE ON TG.

Great advice there. That's the reason I'm waiting to go to the ETAR to try a bunch of bows. I'm not stuck on the Shrew type design. I've shot a Palmer takedown and a Fedora 560 both of which I really liked. Looking forward to trying a lot more before buying.
HOOTS bows, you gotta try a HOOTS!!
The Hoots is a red cocabola with bacote and osage. 58" and 52@28. I think I will check out your shoot. Thanks!
Oh yeah...moose antler, lots of it!
So if you like the Shrew design why not just buy a Shrew? For their price they are an excellent value in a custom bow so why substitute?
If its a longbow your after.I agree with Greybeard.Troy Hedlands 7 Eyes bows are 1st rate.
I like the Shrew design but just didn't want to put out that kind of money for the Shrew name. But thats just me. I personally didn't feel like it was a substitution. I personally feel that my bow is nicer than a Shrew. Just a choice.
Bigdog has a HOOTS forsale now in the classifieds. Seen it, shot it, and its nice!! Check it out!!
Hey Scott, I got a couple of Widow recurves you can try if you wan't. They both are around 50# @28". I plan on attending the Oxtar shoot and can bring them along or give me a call and we could do it sooner. Rob Dedrick
Dwyer Endeavor. Dave's newest addition is a radically reflexed short longbow (oxymoron?) that has good shooting qualities and is easy on the eyes. Plus Dave, Corey and Sue are top-notch. I've got about 6 more months on my order.
Thanks Rob. I can wait till the OxTAR but if you wanted to come up and shoot a Wednesday during our league that would be cool. Although I doubt a Widow is in the budget. I could sell a couple guns I guess... :(
