I need to build me some arrows for the Muzzy in August. I'm shooting my Zona curve 52# @28. I picked up a half dozen carbonwood 3000's today to test. I think they will be too stiff without adding 300 plus grains up front. What works for you guys?
I've done well with my hunting set-ups. Anywhere from #58-#63...
Last few years it's been my #58 Kwyk Styk with Beman carbon arrows footed with a piece of alum behind the point....judos and steel adapters right around 250grs...
There's folks that go light, but I shoot what I hunt with....
Where did you get the carbonwoods from?
I shoot GT3555's out of my bows ranging from 46-48 50 gr. brass insert internal wood dowel footing 125gr judo that all gives me about 190 up front. I shoot the same thing I hunt with.
This is my first year going and I'm going with wood, same cedars I hunt with. If I break a few so be it. I'm just gonna try it and have a good time!!!!! I have never hunted foam blocks....lol!
Where's the muzzy shoot in August? All of my bows are 52# and I shoot GT 55/75's with 250 grain tips. I use glue on Judo's with steel adapters same as Guru.
You know the last couple of years I have had trouble with getting the right arrow because of the judo weight. I was using the glue on judo's with the aluminum adaptors but they always ended up bending and i would be shooting crooked tips half way through the shoot. So last month I decided with the help of stu millers dynamic spine calculator to find out an arrow that would work with the 125gr screw in point. Came up with a 35/55 gold tip with 50gr brass insert for my 55lb palmer recurve.
Beman MFX Classic 400's. 100 grain brass insert. Mine weigh 555 grains at 29". Small diameter and tough.
My plan is to try out these carbonwood 3000's with stock inserts and various grain field points hoping to end up in the 250gr range. That would give me a good hunting setup aswell. I need to revamp my arrow inventory as all I have now are 3 or 4 of these and those etc.. I may still order a dozen 3555 goldtip blems from bigjim and put 50gr inserts and 125 heads.
running buck, the muzzy is up the ny thruway near Albany I beleive. Where in sussex are you, I'm in Vernon?
If you get the dates and directions let me know, I'm outside of Branchville.
I used CE Heritage last year,29.5", 50 grain brass, 125 tip, footed with an inch of 2216. I shoot a 56# Griffin. First time I didnt break an arrow. I thought I lost one, but found it in the lost arrow bucket on the last day. I was impressed, and will be using most of that dozen again this year.
Running Buck, it is located in Jewett, NY. Check the trad events thread. It is an invitational, and the contact numbers are there in order to be "invited".
I used hickory shafts last year, same ones I like for hunting. Only broke 1, and I connected with quite a few hard things, too. The only problem is, they weighed in at 740-grains, and the shots are usually 20-25 yards, average. So this year, I'm using CE Heritage 350's, footed on the back and front. Almost as durable, and 100-grains lighter...
Ron, the course can be hard on wood, bring extra. I'm not saying your a bad shot but i have seen what it can do to arrows especially if you progress through the ranks.
I am a bad shot! I go to a 3/D with dozen arrows so I'm expecting the worst, some of them 35 yd, leaning around a tree shooting a block set on a stone wall shoots...lol!
Hey Jim, Are you shooting your Hill at the Muzzy? I think I my shoot my Jerry Hill Stalker Deluxe!
My Big Five will be there
