I intend to do some Ghillie suit hunting this year on the ground. I would like to pick up a light weight, compact, quiet stool to stop and sit now and then. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks
Gil
I have this Ameristep 3-leg stool and it's great especially for the price. Not most well made thing in the world but it is light, compact, and quiet. I've used mine quite a bit in two years and it's still going strong. I picked mine up at a local sporting goods store.

Tandy leather makes a stool kit that I have used for 2 years now. Had to do something as I needed to sit every 50 yards or so due to a spine problem that caused excruciating pain in my legs.Just had spine surgery and the pain is greatly relieved but will probably still carry the stool. Frank
I use a stool/chair made by 30.06 outdoors. It's the three legged one that folds up and has a back on it.
Very light and comfy, has a carry strap on it. I have to have one with a back rest on it or my back get's to hurting and I can't sit still. They cost around 25-30$
Goodluck
i have a Double Bull, it has lasted 7 years. they have a back on them that i like.
I use the same as oldgoat in my groundblinds. i like the back also.
Double Bull the back rest makes them very comfortable.
Nifty Seat
Thanks guys I just bought this one to try. It had some good reviews. The legs are adjustable for uneven terrain and it says it silently swivels. We shall see. $16 at Walmart while it is around $29 everywhere else.

Thanks again

Absolutely nothing better than the Walkstool! They are available in different heights and weigh less than two pounds. I have used one for three years and believe me, it is great!
I like my DB a bunch. It's newer model and it's uch larger than the old model with a lumbar adjustable strap.band what ever you wish to call it that's the cat's meow.
IMHO
God bless,Mudd
I had a small three legged stool that was super easy to carry in a back pack or turkey vest. I went to Cabela's four legged stool after a three hour sit in a turkey blind got a little painful It is a bit longer, but light weight and has a carry strap on the stool and the cover.
This year I'll be sitting on a camo'ed 6 1/2 gal. bucket with a swivel seat on top. Bucket was free from work and the seat lid was $10 at Cabella's. I'm a little taller and fatter than the average man and stools don't work for Me.
The Double Bull three leg stool is very good.. I also have used the Niff T Seat the past ten years hunting with my Shaggie suit...
Heres an idea that im sure many could build for free from scrap or scrounged materials

I really like the Byer TriLite Stool available at REI. It is so compact and light weight that I almost always carry it in my day pack when ground hunting. I find it pretty comfortable and the height is good for me to shoot from.

If you haven't already ordered this, I'd advise against it. Here's one just like yours that I smashed the first or second time I had it in the field:

Perhaps your butt is less ... jelly-filled than mine is but these things are really flimsy (smashed another one with a better design a year or two before that) and react very poorly to soft ground.
I'd recommend either a Torges tree seat (RAU posted a link to instructions a bit further up the thread) or just a decent closed cell foam pad to sit on.
I hunted from the ground for the first time the last day of deer last season and I used my climbing stand seat(lone wolf). It worked great I was able to have it a little higher for my longbow.
Thanks for the info guys.
Jim I am 6' and 225 lb, so my butt I bet is a big as yours. I doubt I will make out any better than you. I bought the Walmart one to try, so if it doesn't work out I can return it easily. If it doesn't work out, I am going to try the REI one. I need something light and compact, since I go out before light and stay out until after dark. We usually hunt far back in to get away from presure. This year I want to strictly still hunt, so I am going to be moving most of the day. I am tired of going to neet places to hunt and staring the same 30 trees for two weeks in a tree stand.
Thanks again everybody.

I use what RAU suggested in his post and so do a few of my friends. Light weight and easy to set up.
DoubleBull Magnum. A bit stronger than the wally world version !
Gil - you're in the neighborhood. :D
I just saw this today and am contemplating mocking up something similar with a heavy wool blanket for cold weather use:

I just bought the HuntMore 360* stool with back rest. It costs more than the average chair, but I have spent twice as much on all the other chairs combined before I bought this one. Adjustable legs and seat cushion along with adjustable back rest. You simply can't go wrong with this chair. I made the mistake of letting my wife sit in it, now she is chirping in my ear she would like one.
I used the Double Bull large chair, but I sat in the Hunt More 360 and it is awesome, I am hoping to get one soon.

I sat in the Double Bull chair for 2 days on a Kentucky scouting mission a couple weeks ago, and after thesecond day I dug out the business card for Scott from HuntMore, and ordered one over the phone. It was at home waiting for me when we got back. I wish I would have bought one at the Compton shoot, it would have saved me the shipping cost. I do believe this is going to be the most comfortable season I have ever had.
I have tried the 3 leg stools, the torged tree seat... They are fine for those hr and a holf hunts in early bow season, but am not using the millenium tree stand strap on tree seat...light and comfortable!!!... If you are comfy you fidget too much and see few deer!!!
I have the original DB. I can sit for at least 4 hours without going numb. I need one of them bigger ones so it will fit my big butt.
No offense to the Huntmore folks, but the topic mentions light weight, compact and quiet. It's a chair but it doesn't seem to meet the other criteria about which the OP was interested.
The HuntMore is comfortable, deadly silent, fits into a small bag, but yes it is on the heavier side, but your never gonna get all 4 to be perfect. So, 3 out of 4 ain't all that bad.
I have a 3 legged stool I got from 3 Rivers, I can't remember the name of it right off. the legs come off for storage and travel and they adjustable for height. the seat swivels on a ball bearing base and it's padded. I'm 350# so it should do for anything less as well.
Someone above already mentioned it, but I have used the Niff-T-Seat for several years. Just a single leg, nothing to adjust. I generally set up next to a tree to use as a back rest, but can sit without faily comfortably. They can be set up for several different heights. Try Goggle, you should come up with it.
I just got the new Sportsman's Guide cat. in the mail. They have a Game Tamer chair for $40.00 looks like a Huntmore ripoff.
If I had not just bought the magnum DB I'd give it a try.
7 gal bucket, screw on lid, pack gillie in if u kill pack out , short pack. in bucket and gillie tied on top. Mine bucket is rigged with shoulder straps..
You can get a marsh seat for duck hunting.I have made them cheep and they are great.

I use this , like most things I have not sure where I got it . The round seat screws onto the side for transport , is very lightweight and the seat swivels . I have an old muzzleloader sling on it to carry . The seat is about 18" high . The only drawback is the flange on the post is about 3 1/2 " in diameter and with the sand around here it works itself into the ground after a while . Even though there is no back on it I set it up against a tree to help break up my outline and to lean on . The round seat is 10 1/2" diameter and fairly comfortable , but having a bad back nothing is comfortable for long without me fidgeting anymore . Fred
