i want to buy some small game heads and i want to hear your opinions on which one.

I got some 175gr "Hammers" from 3Rivers Archery and really like how they fly.
I'll second the hammers!
I love the g 5 when I shot with training wheels. But don't know if the make them heavy enough for trad worth looking into.
I like the Ace hex Blunts. Great head, very tough, hard hitting and reasonably priced.
Went out hog hunting Thursday...No hog but had a blast shooting ground squirrels (their are millions this year). I started with blunts but these little holes diggers are so tough they would still escape down the hole with anything less than head shots. I switched and sacrificed a couple of broad heads so I could pin them down. That did the trick :)
Best small game head I have found is take 5/16 bludgeon slip-on, heat it in a cup of water for 1 minute in the microwave and push it on an 11/32 blunt. It weighs 190 grains and will bounce off anything softer than a rock. You can use a 100 grain blunt if you want it closer to 160gr. I have even cut down 125gr field points and then cut the bludgeon in half to make a 125-135gr head. The bludgeon doesn't have as much surface area to hold when you cut them down very far, so I am experimenting using a little JB Weld.
My daughter just returned from Montana where the ground squirrels were "thick" this year and she had a blast! In fact she wanted to stay a couple more days the action was so good.
She started out using the new 150 gr TALON heads - sharpened up - and unless she made a head shot, like C-500 mentioned in his message above, the tough ground squirrels would be able to escape since the 32# bow she was using just didn't put the hurt on them.
Anyhow, applying some corrective action in the form of sharp 2-blade Zwickey DELTA broadheads, the ground squirrels were finally at her mercy.
She is going back in a couple of weeks with her 42# bow and give the TALONs another opportunity, but she already has her back-up Zwickeys sharpened up and in the quiver.
I still have not had the opporunity to use the TALON on small game yet, but it sure seems like it would be a great small game point.
Hopefully, I will be able to provide an update in the near future.
:~)
Shoot straight, Shinken
HTM rubber blunt over a .357 shell case.= 188 grain "wrecking balls"! The .357 fits perfectly over an 11/32" shaft.
Ace Hex Heads for me.
For small game on the ground I use Bodkin broadheads.
Jerry
i use whatever i have on the end of my arrow when something gives me the chance to sling an arrow at it..when i shoot flu flus i dont worry about spine or weight on my arrow so i use the g5 sgh
hex heads for me.
Judo for me its unlosable and makes a mess of rabbits and squirrells.
Either Ace Hex Heads, or a .38 special casing
Definately Ace Hex Heads!
I employ my longbow to control pigeons in and around my barn. I've used glue-on Judo Heads, generic steel blunts, and Ace Hex Heads. The 160 grain Ace Hex Heads have proven to be the most effective in this application. I've gone to broad heads for virtually all other small game. (NO broadheads in the barn!)
The Talons I got from Redfeather Archery are AWESOME!!!!!!!!
The Ace Hex head for me too!
I tried some Game Nabbers this Spring...

Wow, I have had the problem of finding small game heads the same weight as my broadheads and field points. Now I have the answer, thanks guys.
Took a cottontail with a Talon this morning. If I knew how to get pics off of my phone and on here I'd post a pic
Ace hex heads also
Another Talon fan here! Chipmunks in my yard hate them!
Magnus
I tried the hammerheads but I keep breaking them right behind the head where it necks down to the threads but I shoot a 80@28 longbow with a 900gn arrow so it's hard on any head. I like judo's they hold up great
I'd opt for these badboys!
Talons, from Red Feather Archery, a sponsor here!

They look like they pack a mean kick!

Holy crap! :saywhat: I'm getting some of these at Compton!
Wow!

I like the Ace hex heads. They are inexpensive, and they are hard to lose.
I use both Ace hex heads and rubber blunts....I've had success with both types.
I like the hammers m'self. The 250gn model is devestating! For 'stuff-in-trees' type shooting, a .357 casing glued over a 200gn field tip works very well for me.
Blunts with an adder behind it or a judo point and old broad heads for jack rabbits .
wow i never expected that i would get so many responses thanks to all i might have to try the ace hex blunts!
I have been shooting the 125 Judo for a long time now and I love the way they stop. My only problem is that they are hard to clean the dirt/grass out from the spring after each shot. Does anyone have a good suggestion? Here where I shoot the soft, wet dirt really clogs up the point and is hard to remove and of course it throws the weight off as well.
James, I just lift one foot and whack the side of the arrow on the side of my boot. That knocks most of the mud/dirt off the judo, which is good enough for the next shot. I don't see the need to completely clean it before every shot.
Screw top bottle caps. Just drill a hole in the center of them and screw the FP back on. Cheap and good enough on the small stuff.
G5 SGH (Small Game Head).
I prefer the gamenabbers and hexheads for rabbits and squirrels.
Hex heads are nice for the price, but I like the wider impact area of the Hammers for stumping. I shoot a lot of 125's so the Hammers give me better coverage. They grab better on the ground, grass..... The hex at the larger sizes are fine, but the smaller ones just don't have much area. For small game the Hex probably has better penetration due to the smaller size. The VP's look a lot like a Hammer. I may have to pick some up.

I see that you are in Colorado and I know you guys may have some drier conditions but for me here in North Georgia, it is more than a wrap on the boot sole. I try that over and over but invariably have the use my hands to clean them off. I guess in may not matter much but I feel like the extra mud/dirt that is stuck on the point will affect the weight enough. Your opinion is that it does not?
A modified Wensel Woodsman is the best I have found, although the new Talons are looking really good so far.....and hope to test them a bit more this coming weekend.
I love judos for stumping....but do not like the success of them on small game.
Muzzy Grasshopper Rings behind a 200 grain field point. Terry, how do you modify the Wensel Woodsmans?
Hammers, they fly great, pack a punch and don't bury up if you want to stump shoot.
I still like the Judo. It sticks in the animal and then I can grab it! The never get lost under the grass. I can get over 500 shots and they are still going strong....can't argue with that!
I got to go with SGT's. They are mean little heads, Shot a concrete wall with one and did not hurt the head. Messed up my new arrow I was trying but the head was still good to go.
James, a little extra weight is not going to affect your arrows enough to mess up your accuracy, you could have a weight difference of 50grns or more, and still hit the target while you are stump shooting.
I think too many of us(including me)overanaylize things. I know my problem is carried over from my compound days.
With that said, I would be a little more critical if we were talking broadhead arrows at big game.
g5 sgh head, good design mix of a judo and solid blunt.
I like the G5 S.G.H. as well but I have broken a few of the talons off and bent a few more back. They are quite expensive as well.
For years I shot Judo's. Great for stumps, not so great for game.
I like regular steel blunts and .38 brass, but they seem to break my wood arrows too much.
Now I only shoot the SGT (Small Game Thumper) from Vantage Point Archery. I thought they'd be good on game and I was surprised to find that they were really good stumpers too.
Kustom King should have some at the Compton shoot.

For several years I have taken field points and dropped a 5/16 washer over the point and spot welded it.
Ace Hex heads!
