Title: Storage Cabinet for Bows and Arrows
Post by: WildmanSC on May 24, 2010, 11:53:00 AM
Does anyone have a storage cabinet they use to hang their bows and store their arrows?  I need one that I can put in my house so I can store the bows horizontally and the arrows either vertical or horizontal.  I will have 3 bows to store in it and who knows how many arrows!

To expand the thought a bit, did you build your storage cabinet?  Or did you buy it already built?

I'm interested in this too!

I'll never get a man cave so I'm just hoping for a man cabinet.

How ironic. I was thinking of a bow cabinet myself. I believe Maurice Thompson mentions a bow cabinet in the book "The Witchery of Archery".I am a cabinetmaker by trade. I might have to tackle a projectlike this real soon. I will let you know when I come up with something.

The cabinet is properly called an ascham, after the famous writer of Toxophilus. I don't know of anyone making them nowadays, it was more of a turn of the (former) century thing. Typically, the bows were hung vertically, and arrows stored in their quivers or in a receptacle on the floor of the ascham.

In time of Maurice Thompson, a cabinet like this was common.  I believe it was called an "Ashcam"

I bought a tall cabinet from IKEA about 86inches tall. Certainly not as nice as well made cabinet from a quality woodworker but its what I could afford and its what I could get upstairs in a 100+year old house.Tooks the parts ups and assembled.  If we ever move might have to take it apart to get it down again. Anyway modified the inside to be able to hang up to 6bows several quivers, softbowcases and several other gear things. It works for me.

mjh,

I did a search on the internet and I did look at the IKEA cabinets.  However, my wife would want me to put a cabinet of that style in the garage.  It's way too hot in the Lowcountry of SC to store my bows in the garage.  So, I'll likely be having a furniture builder build me a cabinet.

joebuck,

I sent woodworker a PM and I'll be sending an email to him tonight.  He asked me how I got his board name.  I told him you gave it to me in reply to my thread.  Thanks!  He said he will be adding the bow storage cabinets, Ascham, to his line of furniture he offers.

I want to thank Joebuck for thinking of me and I will be pulling the designs together this week.  I think what I have in mind will really work well.  I plan to contact the powers that be to properly post pictures and designs but until then it will have to be word of mouth from my fellow Trad-Gangers, al the best, Joe

I would love to see a finished product.  Might inspire me to build my own also.

There was an article in an old TBM that showed some pictures of an Ascham. I don't remember how long ago but it might help with design ideas

I sent off an idea to Wildman we will have to see how it goes, was a good place to start from.  I had to make it a piece of furniture not just a cabinet (which to me is a lot more fun).  Killdeer I will have to get in touch with you next week and pick your brain a bit if you do not mind, all the best, Joe

Interesting this subject just came up as I am designing one now. I am a woodworker and have decided to store my bows and arrows in a dedicated box rather than hang them on an open rack or, as they are now, here and there.
I have a pretty full plate already, but will post some pictures when its built, probably later this summer.

In the late 1400's the French used a 7' tall by 3' wide by 2 ½' deep cabinet called a "Box ete Cabinette" to hold swords and bows. Later, Dutch had a similar cabinet called "Boxet a Cabeliz". In the 1500's the English Tudors used the term "Ashcam".
