For you out there that have some experience with this, how do you treat the leather after it's been dyed? I dyed some suede leather and it got a little wet today-noticed it started to come off onto me just a bit... What's the best way to seal it all in? Wax?
Thanks for the help
Jeremy
I have not dyed suede for that reason. Normally, after dying cowhide, it is allowed to dry, then buffed with an old towel. Carnuba and most other wax is recommended for smooth leather. Google wax for leather or suede, or check with a leather shop.
I am with hud. Mosts things that would seal the dye will smooth the leather and then it isn't suede anymore. Sort of like my suede hiking boots. they started as suede but now look more like smooth leather with the addition of lots of waterproofing. If I dyed suede I might try some of those waterproofing products for specifically for suede dress shoes. If you can keep the water out presumably you might keep the dye in.
Generally suede is dyed after the tanning and is part of the processing. On full grain leather dye is applied then treated with a dressing(Montana Pitch Blend,Mink Oil, etc) and an acrylic finish over that. Usually this will prevent bleed through. Can't really do this effectively with suede.
