Funny how certain compound companies make fun of hunting with "your Daddy's bow" but here on TG most people support tradition and love to see "that old closet bow" come out and bring some meat home.
I'm fortunate to have a bow from my father which he killed his very 1st bear with 37 years ago this week. The bow is a 1971 Red Wing Hunter that will be bear hunting once again this week. I've been waiting for the right opportunity to kill a bear with it and this Thursday my father will be joining me for a hunt at what I call "the worlds best bear bait"! Dad will be armed with a video camera and me with the Wing....stay tuned!!!
Sweet. Send some video and pics soon.
Looking forward to this
How very cool!
I look forward to "the rest of the story"!
Please keep us posted. Thank you!
God bless,Mudd
That's amazingly cool!!
I wish my dad had got into bowhunting earlier. I got him going only two years before he passed. Managed to take two blacktail deer in those years though.
Good Luck with your daddys bow.
Mike
That really puts the "tradition" in traditional bowhunting.
:clapper:
That's just awsome!
...... lov'm Dad's & Bows
:campfire: Love it!
I guess that says it all!!!
Wish I could have killed something with my Grandfather's mid 1940's custom recurve before IDIOT cousin dry fired it and cracked the limbs.
I hope next year to kill a turkey with my father's shotgun-he never got one in 60 years with it.
Best of luck in your quest.
Oh boy I can't wait.
Jack
Good luck! Go getum.
Good Luck, Shoot a Good One !!
 Can't wait to hear the story! Good Luck!
That has the makings of a great hunt. Best of luck!
I've seen many pictures and video's from Ryan's honey hole, no small bruins on this man's wall. This will be a great thread to watch. Good luck buddy, make that Wing and your Dad proud.
That will be pretty cool! Good luck!
This hunt should always be special for you. Your Dad along and using his old bow! Enjoy.
Very cool! Best of luck!
That old wing will last for several more generations. Treat it well! Good luck.
John
Trucks packed, broadheads sharp, video camera is charging, and just waiting for Dad to arrive. We have 4 hour drive ahead of us and 1600 lbs of bait haul in. I'll post as soon as we get home. Thanks for all the support....Ryan

This is what the best bait in the world looks like!
Sorry...I'll re-size!
Here's the old Red Wing Hunter anxious to "let one rip". (http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu178/ryanderlago/2010%20bear/inblind004.jpg)
:campfire: :coffee:
After an hour and a half of hauling bait, Dad and I slipped into the blind with a small cinnamon bear already enjoying the bait. About 45 minutes later Dad signalled to me that a bear was coming in. I grabbed the bow and Dad got the video rolling. The bear was a large Blackie standing a solid 4 inches taller than the top of the 50 gallon drum. Being a spoiled bear hunter I took a while to determine if it was a shooter or not. By the time I decided to shoot the wind swirled and the bear was gone.
During the next hour he came back twice and didn't want to present a shot.I had decided that he needed to be in front of the barrels to shoot as my bow set-up shot very slow and needed him under 15 yards. On his 2nd time in, with video rolling, he finally gave me that perfect opportunity. The arrow hit him low and tight behind his left leg and seconds later I could hear him death moaning.
A short celebration and video interview later I was standing beside a bear that was much bigger than I had 1st thought. He ended up measuring 7 foot 6 inches nose to tail (without pulling) and green scores 20 inches.
The bow is a 48# 58" Red Wing hunter shooting a 625 grain CX150 with a Tusker Concord and brass insert up front. I was using my Kanati strap on and wearing a pair of shorts with rubber boots and a Tshirt.....not exactly Trad looking. Hope everyone enjoys the pix....Ryan (http://i645.photobucket.com/albums/uu178/ryanderlago/2010%20bear/inblind005.jpg)

Jack
Good gravy, that's a hoss. Great job, Dad & Son. Do that as much as you can. Thanks for sharing.
Ryan,
You ever weigh those giants?
That is a great picture with your Dad. Save one of those  Looking forward to meeting him.
Congratulations! This is one that you can continually pass down! Great story and great bear. :clapper:
WOW :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
1.Congrats
2.What a pig
3.Where do I send my deposit :)
WOW what a monster congrats.
Good on you.
I can't say I've ever weighed any of the bears I've killed. My father guided in a camp that did weigh them and he said he got quite good at estimating weight. He estimated this bear between 425-450. I thought closer to 400. I killed one a few years back (the video is on my website) that we could not physically move...not an inch. I'd put that bear 150 heavier than this one.
I've always used the sqare footage and skull combination as that doesn't change seasonally. I suppose if weight was important to me than fall would be the time to hunt. They sure do look cool in the fall. However, the hide length is much shorter in the fall.
Steve....the lucky touque was in my pack as being in the high 80's it was too warm to wear it. Still looking to buy a pile of those to logo up for next spring. Worse case scenario...you get to use the one with mojo!!
Absolutely "the cat's meow!"!! Just how stinkin Cool is this? "Over the top!" I'd say. I mean just thinking about how you did it with your dad's old bow with your dad running the video... and man! what a trophy bear to top it off. CONGRATULATIONS!
God bless,Mudd
