Title: Camo or not???
Post by: Northwest_Bowhunter on May 17, 2010, 03:49:00 PM
I was just wondering, do most of you use camouflage or just go jeans and tee shirt when you hunt?  If you do camouflage, do you have a preference?

Thanks,
Michael

I wear both, but tend to use a lot of camo.  Why?  Because it's what some of the best modern fabrics are made into.

I also use a lot of mono colored windbloc sewn by my bride.  It's been said on here a thousand times and proven by those of us who have to bowhunt part of the year in blaze orange.  It's motion that matters most.

I've killed them both ways. I prefer camo the two I like best is ASAT and I like to wear the old Winona camo as well. It isn't always needed but it can't hurt to wear it. Besides most of my camo is built to meet my needs while hunting. I can't say that about alot of other clothes.

I like camo b/c it reminds me that I am not @ work.  When else do you get to wear that stuff?  It's part of the experience.  Most bikers don't wear leather b/c they have to.  Believe me, I have seen plenty of motorcycle wrecks and that leather isn't going to save your hide in a bad accident.  It's all part of the experience.  Playing "dress up" helps you get into the mental state that you know you are hunting.  That's how I feel anyhow.

Jeans and T-Shirt = cotton.  Cotton is not the best at keeping you either warm or dry.  The new materials are so much better.  H

Camo I don't think the deer care but it makes me feel better kinda like a ostrich sticking his head in the sand i guess.

Mostly jeans and a shirt, sometimes I use my old BDU pants because they have lots of pockets.  Most of the critters I have taken I have been wearing jeans and a tee shirt.

Csmo - Predator.  I think that it helps when your right on top of them.  I have had them look right thru me and then made the shot at pint blank range.  Movement is a lot more important, or the lcak of it anyway.

Same for me, with those being three of my favorite camo patterns. I have found several other good patterns too. Camo does work, although lack of rapid movement is more important, and keeping your scent away from the animals you are hunting is the most important.

I stalked a young Red hind in my socks and underpants one morning,,,it started to rain and I ended up losing contact with her because she was moving faster than I thought.
My glow in the dark soft bits didn't seem to affect anything much.
Did get very wet but.

Most of the time I wear some camo things but don't go out of my way to buy it.

I haven't been wearing camo as much, been buying a lot of fleece in the solid gray and olive colors and they work great in tree stands. Quiet and warm, with the pants usually dark brown or camo. Most of my coats are camo.

I always wear camo when scouting, hanging atands and bowfishing. The soft material BDU pants are comfortable. I like the pockets when hanging stands.

Camo, as cotton will kill you in the backcountry and the camo high tech stuff when on sale is cheaper than it's non camo cousins of the same material.

Sitka gear on sale is a great investment.  I can't afford it at retail though...

I like camo, Predator. I have other stuff, but don't like it as much. Camo is kind of like fishing lures, some are designed to catch the hunter.

Whatever camo is on sale at the Army/Navy store is what I wear unless I find something at the Goodwill store.

Mr. Northwest_Bowhunter,
We no longer use "camo" (over 19 years now) as we do not find it necessary for our style of hunting.  We spot & stalk Moose, Caribou, Grizz and Black Bear.  Wearing wool clothing, for the most part.  Same for all of our small game hunting.
Best Wishes

I'm kind of mix and match - a little bit of both. But I'm looking to get some muted wool for this fall. rtiberio@aol.com has some wool gear coming out that I want to see. It's on another thread here and was featured on TradBow magazine cover. Fred Asbell was in that mag in an article NOT in camo, but he sure looked concealed. Muted plaid and face paint. Nice and simple. The Camo stuff always costs more. Watch the wind and the movement as has been mentioned is the most important, tho.
