This year when I attended PBS I bought a wooden hen turkey call from JoeBuck. I practiced with it a lot when I got home and drove my wife crazy. Our turkey season has been open since May 1st but it has been tough this year. We had a very warm April and the grass is high. The turkeys haven't been in their usual spots. It was a really nice morning today and I set up before dawn in a spot I have had good luck in the past. I could hear some turkeys gobbling on the roost but they were really far away. I pulled out my Wooden Hen and went to work. I didn't know if these northern birds would like that southern accent ;) but they loved it. I called in 4 birds form at least 1/2 mile. This one was the biggest and made the mistake of coming the closest! A Simmonds Treeshark at 5 yards works great. Broke his spine and he was down and out. Great hunt.

Nice job Steve!!
Good job!
well done.
Awesome, good work.
is that a camera mounted on your bow??
Them scratch boxes Joebuck makes is sho' nuff fine. Mine worked, too.
Chris, that's a string tracker.
 Congrats! Well done!
I'm pretty sure thats a string tracker on his bow...not a camera.
Congrats! Nice bird
Awesome! I used my Wooden Hen on these Yankee birds as well...plenty liked it including the two I missed! Congrats on talkin' southern and gettin' it done :clapper:
ha, ha . . . I knew that :) ! Good lookin bird, I have to say that my mind is just completely off today, cause when I read wooden hen, I thought like a wooden hen decoy, lol. I-need-more-sleeeeepppp!!! :help:
Thanks everybody. Yup, that is a string tracker. Set up with Guru's design. It has worked well for me although this bird was down in sight. I know what you mean about sleep deprived Chris. These 4 am mornings catch up with ya.
Awesome job, Steve! Congrats on a great bird and thanks for sharing the great pics!
Congrats!
Congrats Steve...awesome job. Your wife gave me that "thanks alot" look when you got the call. Mine is same way!!!! why can't wives appreciate a squeky squalky high whine yelp? try out River Run in Plainfield....ask for JD..he's the owner and my old college roomate
Joey, Ive talked to you alot and there is no mistakin you for a yankee. Do you tune the calls differant for the northern guys? By the way that call looks alot nicer than mine. Not complaining but my stickers and call are still carried around in the ziplock bag they came in. I figured out a way to drive my wife crazier than the scratchbox. I'll tell you how bad it is and some of you might can relate. I been trying to get , running a mouth call down pat. My wife said why don't you just get your fiddle out and play. LOL love ya Joey.
Congrats on the bird Steve, thats a great feat and a nice call too. Don
Batman, it does not take you long to read a book or just look at the pictures like me does it?..I do tune my calls different between the blue and the grey. But i tune the striker keys not the call. On northern calls ,i use a hardwood strikers thus creating a faster note. On southern birds, i use a lot of soft woods so it scratches slower. Then sometimes i have to get more specific per states...like for example..CA..i would use only a reclaimable recycled green friendly striker wood because they are more eco sensitive.....now if i have to go city specific like for example San Francisco..well i would just use............oh gosh i better quit before i get in trouble.
great job!
Nice bird Steve. Nice pics too. Is that grey I see starting to crop up on the noggin? How'd your Dad do this year?
Nice job! I've got to get me one of those calls. joebuck check your PMs.
Joebuck, you must be able to "sing the battle hymn of the republic and wistle dixie with equal enthusiasm"...you see I think you tuned it just the opposite for my yankee birds. These folks 'round here just love a southern accent and I believe the yankee toms came lookin' for a small town southern hen :goldtooth:
Congrats Steve! Please re-size your pix though....I just couldn't bring myself to delete it for being too big :notworthy:
Good stuff Steve!
Joey...how did I miss getting a Wooden Hen in Nashville? Heck...I bought everything else that was sold there!
You are on the way to my favorite duck hole. I might have to stop by this January. Surely you have a Wooden Hen/Duck call special combo deal, yes?
Sorry Guru. I jst resized them on PB. Do I need to change the links also?
Very nice

Greg, that is some gray on top. Natural camo right? My dad hasn't gotten a bird yet. We have been hunting together a lot of mornings but he wasn't with me when I got this one. Hopefully his chance will come soon. Have you had any luck?
Thanx Steve
That's what a woodie will do for ya...good job.
Nice bird and congrats, nothing like downing a thunder chicken in the morning!
:bigsmyl:
Steve, I'm finding the birds to be very decoy shy where I'm hunting. They seem to hang up around 50 yards. I even bought a new she-mobile in case my old decoy was too wore out. Nothing! At least they're around this year. Today I'm going bowfishing.
