"The Real Robin Hood" is on the History Channel RIGHT NOW (and again at 11 CST) tonight. Looks excellent and something you guys don't want to miss. I was impressed with what Russell Crowe had to say about the use of the bow, hunting, and the magical flight of an arrow. He seems really into shooting the longbow and it's history. Don't miss it!
Very interesting! I'm liking it thus far!
missed it dang
thanks got it scheduled to record
It was very good, would like to see it again.
Reading the book Robin Hood(the one illustrated by NC Wyeth or maybe it was Howard Pyle) as a kid got me into archery 30+ years ago.
very interesting show. just finished reading Agincourt and all 3 of the Grail series books by Bernard Cornwell. was cool watching their interprtation of how things were back then.
The reason Mr Crowe is so good at being Robin Hood/hunting and shooten a bow is cause he's an aussie!
ak.
It seemed like he was really into the archery aspect of this movie. I came in about half way through the actual longbow part of it and really liked it. I was impressed by how well the host shot that yew selfbow. Didn't even look like he was trying.
Very interesting show, and yes I agree the host is truly an archer.

What was with the host drawing the bows without them being braced, at one point.?
I really enjoyed the show though.
Well, I didn't see it. With due respect to Mr Crowe, the real Robin Hood is Richard Greene. :) Jawge
I missed it but await to see the movie, my bud says that there is no archery in it is there. he he he :bigsmyl:
Dang, I forgot about that. Oh well, Lost was on anyway. I'm sure the History channel will show it again soon.
Seen some of it was very interesting!! What was weird to me is that in America we talk about pulling through the shot hold etc. But over there they seem to shoot with a dead release and are rather quick shooters. Have to watch it again.

If i'm thinking of the part of the show you asking about. He was showing why they call it a long bow. he was using a branch/stick with a string to show what would happen if they used a short bow. When he drew back it snapped in half.
Here is another special coming on the Discovery Chan. on Thursday around 8 cst. I am not sure what it is called. I saw a commercial for it and set the dvr.
I also really liked it when Crow was talking about the arrow flight. To Cool
I will be on my best behavior till the movie comes out so the wife will take me :)

I saw it, it was very interesting.
I caught part of it but will keep my eyes open to catch the "replay".
We might be getting some new recruits!
Very interesting program. Makes me want to try and build a self-bow
Also makes you wonder how many bows they made & carried into battle - I would suspect if your life is depending on a self bow (that gets a fair amount of abuse), you'd want to have a backup handy.
When I was a kid I read the howard pyle book until the cover fell off.
I'm not a big movie fan, but this looks like one to see. The History Channel program was really good.
That was a great show. The host seemed talented with all the weapons.
was interesting to watch, might have to take in the movie.
the show is showing again at 800pM On Saturday the 15th, according to the schedual.
Just to put the record straight for Mr Kidner sake,,,Crow is a born an bred New Zealander.
Get over it skippy.
I enjoyed the show and seeing the various clips from the movie was a big plus for me.
This might get me to a theater when it comes out...

You are mixed up on that dude. The real Robin Hood is Erol Flynn. I love that movie.
Yeah, excellent History Channel show, but I wonder who is doing the trick shooting in the video clips? Great shots...
Gained respect for Russell Crowe - paraphrasing his real life quote – " I luv watching the flight of the arrow. The excitement of loosening the string and watching the arch of the arrow."
Been searching all over Hulu, History.com, etc. with no luck. Has anyone found the full episode online?
I'm in Illinois and it's not on the Hist channel here. I'll have to hunt it down

I heard they made 200 authentic longbows and over 7000 arrows for the new RH movie.
How does a man get that contract? :readit: :D
I've watched the HC special twice now and have enjoyed it both times. FYI: they don't go into detail about the longbow until the second hour. The way Crowe describes how he truly enjoys watching the flight of an arrow, well, it appears that he "gets it". Several critics, who have been at early screenings, have been criticizing the film's script and storyline, but most so far are also praising the detail of the sets, weapons, costumes, etc. . . also the main acting performances. The film is actually a prequel, as it takes place before Robin Hood became the full fledge outlaw of Sherwood Forest. Either way, I'm hooked and will be taking the family to see it in a few days.
Tonight at 8 pm eastern The Legends of Robin Hood on Discovery channel
Great documentary. The man who was describing the longbow shot it pretty well too. Notice he was using a finger tab
In the film, which I just saw today with the family, the archers have something like tape on their string fingers instead of a glove or tab.
Movie, btw, is excellent. Don't miss this one. The last couple of shots are amazing, whether real or not. Wonder who the shooter was?
