Title: Gloss or dull finish
Post by: Cherokee Scout on May 11, 2010, 05:32:00 PM
I recently was involved in a discussion with a friend who makes bows. We talked about how many shooters like a gloss finish on a new bow.
I know most buying a hunting bow might want dull/matt, but those buying a bow for fun shooting might like the beauty of a gloss finish.
My question to you is, on your next bow purchase, would you prefer a gloss or a dull/matt finish?

I love how a bow looks when it's been glossed. But for hunting, all of my bows are satin.

Just because it's not glossy, doesn't mean it's dull.   ;)

Matte is where it's at.

Most of my bows are satin so suited for hunting, but since i started to collect old Bears I begun to appreciate a glossy finish that you can anyway cover in many manners making it shinning free, but more appealing on the range.

I like the 60's & 70's Bears....smooth, slick, but not too glossy. I think those bows were finished in several coats of Fullerplast with sanding between each coat.
Personally, I do not like the matt, peebly, orange peel finish that looks like it was caught in an overspray instead of the man actually spending a bit of time doing the finish.

I think Norm Johnson and Donnie Assenheimer offer the best finishes today.

It probably doesn't really make that much of a difference when hunting, but it makes me feel better.  Billy, your gonna make me feel bad.  I just had two pretty, glossy bows sent out to be done with a satin finish.  Got this one back today.  It's got osage in it, but I don't think it looks like orange peel.

Dull finish, Gloss shows all the dust particules. Unless you have a perfect dust free paint booth.

I like the high gloss finish from an aesthetic perspective. I have a Bear TD Supreme that is very high gloss. I feel like I'd have to really cover it up to hunt with it.  I have two Pittsley Predators, both satin. Then I saw a high gloss with phenolic and an exotic wood -- absolutely beautiful -- the phenolic looked like black glass!  I imagine my Blacktail would be even more striking in high gloss.  I have the time to choose high gloss or satin on a Super Wildcat Brandon Stahl is delivering in November. I'd love the high gloss like others have said "for the range" but I'd hate to leave the bow home on a hunt. I'll probably go satin.

Does not matter to me as long as it is satin.

Dull is where its at for hunting,  hands down.  However,  because I love all bows,  I would never pass up a deal on a dandy due to a gloss finish! Like the older 70's Bear Kmags!  Get LIMBSKINS!  Ive got several sets on bows or on hand....covers the gloss for a hunt just fine!  Alaska bowhunting makes the ones I have.  Worth every penny,  wont hamper performance.  A great tool and protects the limbs from scrathes!

Hey Bowwild, get it in satin and hunt with it.  Once you've killed enough critters with it you can retire it and dress it up fancy.

It really doesn't matter to me. If it's gloss I'll paint or put a skin over it to make dull.

Most my bows are Matte or satin.I do have a few that are high gloss though that I would have no other way. These particular bows would just not look as good with satin or Matte IMO.It really sets em off as showpeieces.

I would use spandex limb skins to hunt with them with no problems.I even use the limbskins on bows with a matte finish anyway to protect them from dings and scratches.

For those who have not yet posted, the question is: if you were going to buy a new bow, would you buy a gloss or a dull finish?

reflection in most light actually hides the beauty of the wood under high gloss finishes. i really don't care for it.

If I order a new bow, it will be dull and not reflective of light.

Thanks for the responses, looks like it is overwhelming, people will buy matt/satin finish bows most of the time.

Folks like different things.

It would be an awfully dull, boring world if we
all liked the same things, and everyone looked and acted alike.

Choices are a good thing.
