I would like to know what size aluminum arrow should i use to start with . I shoot a longbow @ 53# , 29" arrow (bop) 125 gr. point, and around a 530 grain arrow. THANKS ANYONE!!!
Is your draw 28"? Are you shooting fast flight string? Is your bow a d-shape or a refelx deflex?
2016 aluminum arrow will be right in the ballpark & nothing lighter spined than that from your description. 2018 will be too stiff unless you plan on 300grn up-front.

you might want to go ahead & give 1916s a try with 125 grain points also.
I shoot 2016 30"BOP 125 grain head out of my 48#@29" Howard Hill.
i shoot a 54# @ 28 in Hill w/s cut 29 to bop and use 2018 w/ 175 shot like a dart
They All Sound Like WINNERS to Me!! Of Course, Ya Cant Beat A Good WOODEN ARROW!! :archer: Just My Opinion of Course. :goldtooth: :archer2:
2018s
2016's get my vote.
My recommendation = 2018's.
I shoot a longbow at 56# & my 2016's are 27 1/2" with a 145grn woodsman head. These shafts & head combo took a bit of tuning but fly like darts at this poundage & arrow length.
I tried 2018's as well but they were way too stiff until I loaded the front up with 200grn, once I did this they planed out beautifully. Before that they fishtailed uncontrollably.
The thread starter shoots a 53# bow, I assume he has a 28" draw since his arrow length is 29"---if this is so a 2018 will most likely be too stiff for his description, I hope he will at least give the 2016 a chance, if he were shooting carbons he would only need a .500 spine shaft, after all he's only shooting a 125grn head.
Like many here I play with a whole lot of arrows & setups to achieve what works with which bow & draw weights, I feel the 2016 will fit the bill over the 2018. (grin)

I use 2016's on my bows, 47 to 51 lbs. Have also used them on some bows up to 58lbs. When I go to 52 lbs. and up to a little over 60 lbs. a 2018 or 2115 works well. Jim
2016 or 2018. Likely with 125 pt a 2016
:readit: Thanks everyone for your info . This info gives me a place to start. I've been shooting wood arrows for 10 years now and carbon for a couple years now , So i just wanted to try out some aluminum arrows now. :archer2:
Currently in my Bear Kodiak 45# recurve, I've been shooting the 2016's @ 30" with both 125 gr and 145 gr FP's with good success. I feel the accuracy issues are mine since I just started shooting instictively again, after many years on a modern bow with sights.
What I don't like about the 2016's is the noise they make on the release, but I'm sure this can be quieted down with the use of some felt.
Depending on your string type, bow type, and actual draw length you may find the 2016 and 2018 are weak. I shoot a 53#@28" Shrew, my draw is 28", and I shoot 2020 and 2117 arrows cut to 29" with 125 grains up front. These 2 arrows both fly like darts out of this bow.
whether or not your bow is cut to center, shy of center or past center is gonna play into the equation as well.
I like a 2018 or 2115 for starters at your poundage.2115s are slightly stiffer than a 2018.
You can always play with point weight to fine tune. Some 100 grian,125 and 145 and maybe 175 grain points are handy for testing with aluminum.
i shoot longbows that are 52# at my jujst on 27" draw...they are not cut anywhere near centre and have found that Easton GG 500 cut at 28" with a long 42gn adapter and 160 gn b'head give me great arrow flight and shoot right where i'm looking ...
my woodies are getting jealous !
