Gotta tell ya`ll about this "thug" Turkey I been after. If you`ve Turkey hunted much you know that theres always this one that gobbles all the time but just seems to get away everytime you hunt him.Well...this is him. I`ve named him "Slick".
Slick wuz kinde lucky the first time I found him. He was hammering most of the morning but I went after another bird that I thought was gonna come down a logging road but thats another story. I doubled back after getting whooped by the first bird and got old Slick close enough for a shot ...and missed. Shot over his back. No problem, I had several more Gobblers pegged and figured I`d give him a week or so to calm down. I hunted the next day at a peanut field and killed Gobbler #1 for the year.
Went back to slick and he gobbled like mad . I got him up to about 20 yards but he would not come around a big oak that had fell over and was covered in honeysuckle. After 3 hours of a duel it got quiet for about thirty minutes. I figured I could slip out with out spooking him and come back another day. I stood up and he flew off. He was still there.
Hunted other birds but kinda had a grudge on slick and was determined to kill him. After no luck for a week or so I went to Fort Stewart and got very lucky and killed another Gobbler so decided since I had a lot of stuff going on I would hunt Slick on the last few hunts.
Saw him and 3 others in a field between 2:00 and 4:00 three days in a row. I went in a 11:00 the next day and he did`nt show. Went back the next morning and he was hammer`n. I was between him and some hens. The hens came to me as if on a string. Before Slick flew down . I got up and ran them off so they would`nt steal him. I heard them flying through pines 100 yards away. And Slick flew out and flew directly over me to the hens.....About now I`m starting to think Benneli and some number 5`s.
Went back this morning. Parked the jeep in the normal parking spot and walked through the pines and just stood at the edge of the creek for a few minutes to see what sounded off. I usually don`t hoot at Turkeys I know are probably gonna be there. Like normal he started gobbling. This time he was roosted on the ridge so I`m thinking this is gonna be easy.My uncle had plowed a plot and he was headed toward the opening. I got there first and set up with two dekes in the plot. I yelped soft and he jumped on it.I yelped again and he was farther away. Again and hes even farther. I`m thinking thats got to be another Turkey and I sit thinking Slick could be silently on the way. The other bird is gobbling every two or three minutes on his on .But getting farther away everytime.
then Slick sounds off....sounds like he`s on the ground and close to the jeep...
He gobbles again..yep hes close to the jeep.He gobbles 3 times at my uncles tractor cranking up.I wait and yelp softly for nearly an hour.
Whipped again I get up and start to the jeep and hear him gobble and spot`m. 30 yards from the jeep in open pines strutting. These are pines pine straw has been raked in. You can see 100 yards. Its A RED jeep not a hen dummy. I drop to the ground behind some dog fennels and nock an arrow and let out a soft yelp and he unfolds and runs across the road like a scalded dog.I will take this all out on the next pig I run across.RC
Great story! I enjoyed that read this morning, thank you.
Good stuff buddy! I always enjoy your posts.
Just about every gobbler I run into must be "Slick's" kinfolk! Great story!
I can idenify!!!
 That was great RC! The pigs better run for cover!
Great story! I have known several "slicks". Those turkies make me wanna :banghead:
I couldn't kill a bird like him last year and it nearly drove me mad. I passed jakes twice only to have him turn around and just leave without a kiss. I feel your pain :campfire:
I always like slippin' thru them hammocks and sloughs with you, RC, even though it is virtual. All good guys have arch enemies ;)
"I will take this all out on the next pig I run across.RC " Alright now, more 'pork' stories.

I will take dumb relatives anyday. Lol!
P.M. sent, good luck.
Now that's one for the camp fires, I can't wait for the story when you finally put Slick in the bag, and then the oven.
Good read that. We don't get to hunt Turkey over here in Australia so I love reading about them.
nice i've not got anything yet with min
Thanks for sharin' about Slick, RC!
Lookin' forward to hearing how long his beard is and how sharp his spurs are!
:~)
Shoot straight, Shinken
RC great story. I have a love hate with those turkeys that get named. Hope you get him.
Slick don`t know who he`s messin` with.
I hate to admit it but for all intense and purposes my season is finally over. The turkeys won this season. I am not discouraged a bit because if I ever get another in front of my bow he won't spook from seeing me draw with my "On-the-Bow" blind.
Thanks for sharing your story. I'm jealous that we don't have the numbers of turkeys we are used to having but 3 or so years now the weather has made for some really poor hatches.
I will get after turkeys again this fall, you can bet on it!
God bless,Mudd
