Title: The Wensel's "And the horse you rode in on"
Post by: Dusty Nethery on May 06, 2010, 12:32:00 PM
Wondering if anyone knew where, besides the 'bay, I could get my hands on a reasonably priced copy of this book? The only one I found so far had a hefty price tag of $95.00.

Thanks.

Can't believe it. This is one I actually have never heard of. Good luck in your search. Their books do go way up in value when out of print.

The bookmark is worth the cost! One of Barry's better ideas!

It's the official Redneck manual. Alot of the stuff was published in the P.B.S. magazine a
long time ago. I miss those articles alot. As far as the bookmark goes, it kinda summed up the attitude of the whole book.

The book is a collection of popular columns they wrote for the Professional Bowhunters Society magazine under the masthead of "Ramblin Rednecks".  The columns could best be described and rambling redneck humor.  Some of the column topics are hunting-related while some are not.  This is not a good book for anyone who considers themself to be politically correct.

I've always been a bit perplexed at how two guys raised in Vermont could see themselves as rednecks, which is commonly defined as poor rural Southern whites (look it up). Gene likes to make fun of guys from my neck of the woods, saying that they "can't do the snort wheeze because their front teeth are missing."  Of course both twins do bear an uncanny resemblance to Kentuckian Ned Beatty . . . makeby they can confirm their good ols boy status by landing a role in the sequel to Deliverance:^)

You guys are bringing back some great memories. One of which hardly anyone knows about. A couple years after Gene and I wrote "... And The Horse You Rode In On" I got a call from my attorney telling me there was a book being written by James Carville about "The People VS. Kenneth Starr", The Clinton administration inquisition, impeachment hearings, etc. Apparently they wanted to originally title the book the same as ours but couldn't because we already had a copyright on that title. So they ended up with the title "And The Horse He rode In On". I had to laugh when my attorney said, "if they use your title.. we got 'em". Ha. And all along Gene and I easily could have been bought off. Now you know the rest of the story. BW

Gary,

You and I BOTH know "Redneck" is more a state of mind than birth geography. I've met rednecks who have never even heard of cornbread and wouldn't know what to do with a sow-belly to save their lives.

I've even met rednecks from other countries.

"Thank God I'm a country-boy..." - JD
"...'Cause a country-boy can survive." - HWJr.

Keith, I noticed you're quote: "...'Cause a country-boy can survive." - HWJr.  I've known Bocephus for over 25 years and have spent a good amount of time on his silver eagle tour bus, at sounds checks, and on stage photographing his shows.  That probably gives me a enough field experience to pen a copy of REDNECK 101.  Did you know that Gene once lived close to Hank in Montana?  Kinda makes you wonder who influenced who???  Picture Gene and Barry with their t-shirts soaked with beer swaying to the beat of "Buck Naked" (That's an actual song title moderators:^)) On second thought, try NOT to picture that!

Hank Jr. had a home a cross the field from me when I lived in Montana. When he first moved into the "neighborhood" I was in the yard shooting my bow when a fancy Mercedes four wheel drive with dark tinted windows pulled up. I walked over while the tinted windows went down. It was Hank. He said, "You're Gene Wensel, aren't you?" I answered, "Ya...who are you?" Ha! He used to come into my office once in a while. Actually we really blew it while we were filming our old "Spirit of the Bow" DVD. While we were shooting the tiny saccharin tablets out of the air, he happened to come by. I should have asked him to throw pills for us. Never thought of it. Rednecks are all over the world Gary.....
By the way, the final printing of the infamous bookmark was scheduled to be done in scratch and sniff....

Cool picture Gary!

Like so many insults, those who were called Redneck adopted it with pride.

Not had a chance to see the book everyone is talking about. Looks like I am on the hunt for a copy now.

Ned's from Louisville Biggie which isn't officially part of Redneck country.  Sit down at a well-to-do restaurant in "The Ville" sometime and try to order sweet tea. At the least you'll get the "you must be a Redneck" look and at the worst a corrective comment concerning how "we don't serve that here!"

I took Jerry Simmons and Byron Ferguson on a bear hunt one spring, driving up through WI and MN. If I only had a dollar for each time they fussed about how the folks "up there" didn't understand how to properly feed and water a traveling Redneck:^)

The dedication pretty much sums up the flavor of the book...somethinbg like "We dedicate this book to a guy named Tobey that we met outside of a truck stop one time.  We didn't get his whole name but he had a cool looking bike".

Like Marty said, that cover was one of my more brilliant ideas. I actually thought of it in a dream one night and sat straight up in the bed about 3 AM. A patriotic fist over a patriotic background would be fine on the shelf. But when you added the complimentary bookmark the message was coincidenatlly complete. My wife says I should use my genius mind towards other things. Ha.  BW

Hank tossing saccharin tablets would have been a hoot.

BTW, recently watched the History/Discovery channel's special about "Hillbillys" and it claimed the original term "Redneck" came form old school WV coal miners wearing red neck bandanas taking up arms and marching against the law and company store.

I've got a copy way the heck up here in Northern Quebec.

In the early nineties sometime I was invited to a deer camp in Virginia by someone I had met through my guiding. Turns out that Barry and/or Gene had just left the day before and the lodge Manager had a copy of the book for me.

I think that was my last trip to Virginia...and that book is a great souvenir!

I would love to read anything these guys have wrote. I have seen their movie "Primal Dreams" but have never had a chance to read anything that they have written. When I was a lil' shaver my dad took us to the Michigan Bowhunter's Rendezvous every summer and the brothers were there doing a seminar but the only thing I remember about it was something about "you should not ever throw a black bear carcass off of a bridge that is under construction" or something like that. Where is the best place to look for their fine works anyways?

All of their books that are still in print can be purchased from their website at  www.brothersofthebow.com. (http://www.brothersofthebow.com.)  For those that are out-of-print, you can check on amazon.com or the big auction site. Be prepared, though, as the prices are a little steep.
