Title: Caribou hunting 2011
Post by: Trad Lad on April 30, 2010, 10:00:00 PM
My son and I are looking for a possible caribou hunt in 2011. I have hunted caribou in the NWT two times with True North. These were good trips but am looking for another outfitter this time. Don't have any confidence in Ontario.
Has anyone hunted else where that they would like to refer for hunting with long bow or recurve. I was impressed with Jack Hume out of Shefferville but noticed he only had four bow hunters in 2009 and I suspect they were all wheels. Would like your input.
Thanks for your opinions.

Hi Pip,

I think any and all reputable caribou outfits will cost you $5-7k per person. NWT, Quebec (risky), Manitoba, or guided AK. Mtn caribou even more. You get 5-7 days hunting.

Just a suggestion: Look into a diy AK hunt. It's not as tough as people think it is. You'll spend money (between you) to gear up. Then you'll have air taxi, AK license & tags, and airline tickets. The best thing is you're all set to go every year, and you'll get 10 days hunting for less money per person than Quebec will for 6 days. You'll kill caribou too.

Nice avatar!

Pip,

Lots of good info on a Labrador outfitter here:

That is where I'd go IF I could talk myself into saving/spending the money.

"It's not as tough as people think it is."  I'll argue with you on that statement Kevin!  A full half of my Alaskan caribou hunts have been very physical.  "You'll kill caribou too.  "I think I am down to 3 for 6 or so on my Alaska hunts and I don't always get decent opportunities.

That said, give me a yell Pip and I'll hook you up with that info we talked about I think it will be reflective off what KD is talking about.

Aw come on Steve...   :wavey:

What I meant was logistically speaking. Guys think it's next to impossible to figure out and plan a fly-in Alaska hunt. It's relatively easy, after you do one and get the experience. The first one is the hard one...mentally speaking.

Hey...we all know you do everything the hard way! I agree that the physical stuff can be tough, but that's just more reason to get in shape. Ultimately, a trip up to your beautiful state is so satisfying...

Yeas, i agree with that, the logistics aren't that bad these days as there is so much solid advice available, just gotta jump in with both feet (first)!
