I am wanting to go mule deer and elk hunting again. I was wandering about wyoming. I was looking for an area that has reasonable access and decent number of animals. I really do not care about size since I tend to shoot the small ones anyway. I am not scared of putting boots to the ground to get away. I was looking at the Medicinebow/Encampment area does any one have any experience with this area? How many preference points does it take to draw this area? I use to love to do this in Colorado but my unit went to a draw for elk and mule deer and I still need 3 mor points. Thanks

I have not hunted that area, but I lived in Cheyenne for a few years and used to hunt rock chucks in the Snowy Range nearly every weekend when snow allowed. There is quite a bit of private land in the lower areas and much of the public land gets quite a bit of pressure because it is close to Cheyenne and Laramie.
Personally I like the area around Pinedale better. You can get into some good hunting on your own. You just have to stay out of the wilderness areas because of the stupid law that states you need a guide or resident with you to hunt them.

I agree with Dave, lots of pressure in the medicine bow. Especially the Snowyes. Go over to the madres west of encampment and there is quite a bit less. Weekends worse than durning the week. Get away from roads and see very few hunters. Most hunt south of battle mtn road, I hunt north and see few hunters in the field (Jack Creek area in the far north). But you cant go wrong with Pinedale area in the far western part of the state.
