Title: Fletching choice...straight fletch
Post by: nightowl1 on April 27, 2010, 06:50:00 PM
Ok, I'm fletching arrows as I type this. Right now I'm fletching straight. If I have a perfectly tuned arrow, and I do, is there any reason to go with another type?

To me it seems straight fletch would be more quiet and less drag.

Just curious as I have 10 more arrows to fletch.

If you use broadheads you may want more spin to overcome thier tendancy to wind plane.

I shoot four fletch, 4" lo-pro bananas with straight fletch, offset a bit.  I get some spin that way.  I have shot them with broadheads - Grizzly and Eclipse - and can put them right next to each other.  I have not tried a wider head and you would be wise to try them out with your brodheads of choice before you get all of them fletched, like Guy mentions, the wider head may plane.

oh yeah.. they are 5 inch shields

I shoot snuffers and was thinking about the zephyr scirocco which are wider

I guess I'll fletch 3 or 4 then test them out

I like straight fletch with slight offset. Good broadhead flight and I do think they are quieter and faster.

i fletch with a 1 degree offset or so, gives some spin for fast recovery with broadheads.

Given perfect tune, yes you can fletch straight even if shooting broadheads.
I've shot straight fletches for around 20 years and have NEVER had an issue with wind planing or any other common broadhead problem.
2" Rayzar feathers with bear razorheads or big Tuskers, and it's all about quiet and stable arrow flight.

i never fletch helical, always straight with a slight offset.  no issues with any broadhead arrow flight.  in the long run, as long as yer arrows are flying straight and true, no worries as long as you can consistently hit the right spot.

Straight off-set rt. or left.  One set of clamps and I can use both wings.  No flight problems.
