Title: carbon choice between two calibers ???
Post by: robertson on January 08, 2007, 06:11:00 AM
I am planning to move to carbon shafts but no experience at all with these shafts !!!
As i whould like an heavy arrow ( 700 grains )
I was wondering witch spine i will need in the gold tip traditionnal model 55/75 or 75/95
concidering that with all the brass inserts and a grissly broadhead i will have a mass of 390 grains in front
with my calculations i will prefer the 75/95 because the total weight will be 712 grains

I shoot a modern longbow reflex deflex and fast fly string 62 pouces at 57 pounds to my draw

I know i could try by myself but being from france i have to order in the states for that and dont to want order twice

Thank s for the help of the experts

The most important consideration is spine not weight. If you error on the light spine the side plate can be built out to allow you shoot a weaker spine and still have suitable arrows.
If you error on the stiff spine and at full length they are still to stiff you are stuck.
Each bow is very diferent in its arrow requirement. I have a 42# bow that shoots a stiffer spine than some 60# bows I have. You may need a 45/60, but only testing will tell you.
If I was you I would try the 55/75 and start off with full length shafts and trim as needed for proper flight.

I use 5575 gold tips for my bows, 57 pounds to 65 pounds at my 29 inch draw. I like a very similar set up to you and find it is best to use just the GT brass weights and not weight tubes to bring my arrows up to 590-620 grains total weight. So I use a 30 grain steel insert and and two 20 grain brass weights up front with 190 grain or 160 grain grizzlies mounted on 41 grain broadhead screw-in inserts. That gives me 271-301 grains up front and great penetration and flight on a 30 inch arrow.

Unless your Longbow is cutto tru center I would think the 75/95 would be 2 stiff.  I have 340 up front of a 30" arrow out of a 55# super kodiak. 4 fletch - flies great.

I have a 1 pc. Morrison Dakota long bow 49# at 28 " draw length 62" AMO, fast flight string and use 31" 5575 GTs with 225 total up front, 520 Grain arrow total weight..
I believe 7595 GTs would be way to stiff..
