Is it alright to take a broken down 3pc. longbow as carry on luggage on a plane?

Probably not. When I went to Colorado last fall I shipped my bows and arrows out 2 weeks ahead of my flight so I'd be sure they were there when I got there. Pat Pat

I went to Co last fall and they would not let me take mine on as a carry on either.

That is a big, fat, NO.
But on the bright side, you don't have to declare your bow like a firearm in your checked luggage.

I take mine on as carry on but no arrows. I have done this a couple of times with no problems in the last couple of months.

When in doubt, call the airline....few minutes on the phone can save a lot of time at the airport.

Even before 9-11 I called the airlines and they said OK just carry it on and we'll store it up front. Get to the check station and the old boy there says thats a bow, I say yes sir no string and no arrows. He says no way, doesn't care what the airline told me. So now I have to run a quarter mile to the ticket desk to check it in and just made the flight.
I'll never do that again. Just put it in the checked luggage.

It would probably depend on the mood of the TSA officer that screened your bag. Chances are though, it would quite a hassle at the very least. You'd be better off finding a good hard side case and check it as baggage or packing it in the middle of your suitcase surrounded by your clothes for padding.

Its a waste a time to call anyone and ask, the person at security is NOT going to be the same person, neither is the person that checks you in. Even way before the latest security stuff it was iffy, the US Olympic Archery team was refused to carry on their bows at Atlanta airport. Pack it in the middle of your duffle bag with cloths all around. My bows have been all over the world like this with no problem.

I guess everything is slick unless they loose your checked bag. What the heck though? Your gonna get $300 for all your duds, your bag, and your bow.

Get yourself a big rolling duffle with two compartments. In the bottom you put your hard case (one made for a double barrel shotgun) with your bow and arrows in it. In the top you put some clothes. It is VERY convienient. Trust me, I travel with my bow on an airplane about twice a month. Don't waste your time trying to carry on your bow.

I manage an airport. NO. Just check it. the problem is you can get on and have trouble in connecting flights. the TSA rules says no weapons, only takes one TSA pereson to have you scrambling.
If you get a take down, try a hard golf bag, can carry your bow, arrows and all your hunting clothes. Protected well, too. They do golf bags all the time.

Roadkill--I do that too. A Recurve T5 Double Bull, Bow and arrows fit nicely in the hard golf bag ;)

I use the golf bag also I put my DB blind in it with my bow and other gear and a bow in my duffel bag that way if a bag is lost or stolen I still have enough equipment to go hunting.......stabow
