Title: Rio Grande Turkeys 101..???
Post by: fido dog on April 23, 2010, 04:17:00 AM
Hey all.

I just found out I have tags that I bought earlier in the year. I wasn't concerned about Turkeys at the time. They were just included.

I'm about to go out next weekend and am looking for tips. I've had success in CO with a box call while taking pictures. That's about it.

Any help would be more than appreciated.

Fido, I am headed south of Odessa next week to try my hand at Rio Grandes.  I am hoping they act similiar to Merriams.

kadbow,

Stop by my restaurant before you head south and I'll buy you a beer and you can give me pointers.

We are going to be coming across on I-10 a bit south of you otherwise I would try and take you up on that.  Not that I would have much for pointers.  I've chased birds for awhile but they are few and far between up by me.  Seeing some is doing good.  I hear there are some birds where we are headed.

Just got back from the panhandle.  Lots of birds.  Weather wasn't that great.  They gobbled very little.  Afternoons were better than mornings.  It is about to get right.  I would have done good, but I missed ever so slightly.  I setup about 2hrs later, and put a pretty boy out.  That was a mistake.  Bird came to a call down the road and saw decoy and hung up putting about 45yds.  Awesome experience just to shoot at one.  I will say this, I will never go to Texas again with a shotgun.  I have never had an adrenaline rush like having recurve in hand and birds around the blind.  Good luck.  Use hen and maybe Jake if using decoys.  Hunting the roost in the mornings is the best bet.  Set your blind up the day before at midday when you figure them out, then slip in an hr before daylight.  You shouldn't be disappointed.

They are under NO pressure. The place I'm going only gets hunted 2-3 times a year and turkeys are usually not what these guys are after. I'm going to get a decoy and box call Sunday. I have a blind already, so we're good there.

Thanks guys!
