I've got a couple vintage recurves with 35 yr. old masking, electrical and adhesive tape residue on them. Whats the best way/solvent to remove w/o damaging finish?
i would think goo-b-gone doesnt hurt finish on wood although i have never used it on a bow
lighter fluid
Thanks but tried it. Goo-still-there. I'm thinking lighter fluid or paint thinner but not sure about damage.
Thanks arrow30 will try
isopropal alcohol and some brass wool.Just let the alc.set for a min.rubbing with your finger and then softly rub with the brass wool

I have had good results with Flitz metal polish. Says is is good for fiberglass too.

I tried WD-40 once and it worked great.
Yup...different adhesives kind of defies any one "best" answer. I will use some of the other alteratives mentioned, but typically I grab the De-Solv-it I keep under the sink...with a high percentage of success. Good Luck, Rick.
Try the WD-40. Another product I have had some success with is wax and grease remover which is sold in auto supply stores. Very carefully use a utility knife blade as a scraper by holding it 90 degrees to the surface.
I would stay away from solvents that could damage the glue.
Good luck, uncovering hidden beauty is the fun part!
Thanks everyone, will try all the above till the goo is gone.
I use the Goof Off. It works great for me. I've used it on many bow. Scott
ive tried goof-off with no prob
Goo-Gone or WD40 and a plastic scraper made from a credit card. Haven't found a residue yet that wont come off. Let it soak a little while. Be careful with solvents unless you want to refinish. Goof Off is pretty harsh stuff.
