Was watching a hunting show on TV the other day and watched a guy apply camo paint all over his face. I suppose he did a good job, but left his shinny bald head uncovered.
This got me to thinking, how many use paint vs some sort of cloth cover-up. Either a pull-over face mask or headnet.
I usually use a tight fitting pull-over full facemask. It is made of very thin, stretchy material. In cold weather I have a pull-over full cover-up made from fleece.
If you have more to add than the single vote allows, feel free to post suggestion, ideas or other comments.
So... which is it for you? Paint or a facemask/headnet?
OkKeith
Neither for me...burndt cork 100% of the time
used to use face powder, havent in some time, just because of the cleanup time involved, but i do feel better using it.
I grow a beard.Works cause I got black hair.
my beard looks like a does tail in the woods.
Burnt cork here, can't shoot worth a darn with a face mask or headnet.
face paint for some reason face masks affect my shooting so i stay with the paint give me better feel and never have to worry about it twisting and not being able to see
Camo sunglasses with lenses that are very different patterns from each other so as to not be symmetrical predator eyes. Add a few dabs of black on the face, again very different on each side. I think the face paint is wasted if your eyes show. In fact full dark face paint can highlight your eyes, the exact opposite of what you want.
The only net I wear is full face and it is the best by far until the sun shines, then I can't see out of it. Again, I can't imagine that nets would work if my eyes are showing.
But then I'm not an elk, so how do I know? All I can say is I have had them very close and staring right past my face when my eyes are covered.
Headnet,,, I wear glasses and it works!
Head net. Use to be just a beard, but now I am told my beard looks like heavy frost on a cow turd.
I prefer face paint but use a headnet only when the skeeters are real bad. Beard worked for years but it is no longer black but snow white.
How easy does the burnt cork wash off? I use the Allen face paint most of the time or a primos mask but the mask is to hot most of the year and the face paint is a pain to wash off.RC
From my Marine days I like the face paint.Makes me feel scary
(http://i665.photobucket.com/albums/vv19/lpcjon2/100_0482-1.jpg)
Spandoflage , keeps skeeters out glasses in place and when it starts to cool down helps keep the heat in.
I use all three types of camo. What siuts the moment,or the location, weather etc.
What Greaseman said!
Face paint. Its as much of a prehunt ritual for me as sliding on my tab...
Head net. Easy on, easy off. Keeps bugs away too.
I started out with paint but it's gets so hot during th early season I'll sweat it all off so switched to a facemask.
You guys that wear the paint; I realize we hunt the wind and all but does it have much smell? The thick oil based military stuff I am familiar with kinda stinks.
OkKeith
beard + burnt cork
Don't forget to go to page 1 and click your vote in the poll.
OkKeith
I like the Spandoflage headnet/facemask. Haven't used paint or cork in years.
Head net for me .
Use both a bit,but most of the time I just don't shave a few days an I have fairly olive/brown skin anyway.
i like to wear a ghillie and then use a piece of camo colored cloth from an old summer hunting shirt and tie that around my face..
i have an odd shaped head so most of the store bought face masks don't fit me. lol
Headnet for me.
I grow out my beard during the hunting season and cold months and wear a low brimmed hat... seems to work.
spandoflage replaced my facepaint
Headnet for me. Easy on, easy off, no bug problem and best of all no clean up if I have to stop in town before going back to camp.
Interesting results on the poll. Anyone have options other than the typical stuff?
OkKeith
Carbomask, no smell, easy cleanup, and once it it dries it won't easly rub off. I like their soap too, it doesn't generate a lot of lather, this good when you have a limited amount of water.
I REALLY LIKE CARBOMASK!!!

face paint all the way for me, can't shoot with a vail on and find it gets in the way
after watching a lot of hunters in the bush the two things most overlooked and that stand out the most in my opinion are
1, Face
2, hands
i think its very important to cover them up when hunting walk and stalk
I like the face paint but I always wind up red for days after (alergic). So I use a tight face mask.
RC, The burnt cork comes off easier than the face paint does. I use 2 or 3 of the pre moistened wipes at the end of the hunt to wipe it off.

I resemble that remark! :banghead:
spandoflage, recon wrap, once in a while if it real hot a face netting.
Neither, if I can help it. A flynet if hunting in the desert where there are literally thousands of blasted flies buzzing around.
Okay Ben...
Is it just a foolish tourist thing or do you guys really wear the hats with all the corks hanging off them to chase away the flies?
OkKeith
nah, it's so we never run out of burnt cork for face paint! :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
I haven't seen anybody wearing those cork hats before.
face paint here, can't stand the feel of a mask.Anchor doesn't feel the same. Soap and water works wonders as does unscented baby wipes.
I've gotten so I kind of feel naked hunting without a facemask, doesn't bother my shooting a bit.
DR
I always used SKINZ from cabelas with my wheelie bow, but I'm thinking of camo paint this year with the longbow.
All I ever use is cork! goes on and comes off easy! Jason
carbon mask face paint....the best I've used. Can't seem to find it anymore?????

The guy in the videos is the owner. He's a good guy.
All you do is send them an email telling him what you want. They'll send you the stuff with a bill. Then just send him a check.
Real easy to deal with.
I like burnt cork! Corks are easy to get. Either save the cork from your empty wine bottles or ask your friends to do so.Easy to apply to your face and easy to clean off with soap and water.
Burnt cork, green camo paint, unless theres lot of bugs.
Hey Guys. Thought I would wrap this poll up and let everyone know how it turned out.
A total of 177 folks voted in the poll.
Looks like about 1/3 of us use the facepaint (60 votes/34%). There were strong recommendations for using the simple burnt cork. Lots a guys said that it is easy to apply, has little or no smell and washes off very easy. Several hunters also recommended the CARBOMASK product for the very same reasons. It seems to be dead flat (no shine) and covers very well.
About 2/3 of us use a facemask or headnet of some sort (117 votes/66%). Several facepaint hunters volunteered that they do use a headnet when insects are a factor. One of the problems with headnets/face masks seems to be that they are hot to wear in warmer weather. Many shooters felt that they caused some problem with their anchor and shooting. There were lots of different types, designs and styles but the most common was a some sort of full-face type of mask.
Maybe this gave some of you some new ideas. Thanks to everyone who weighed in.
OkKeith
I use a face mask of cammo netting that is prety close to my face, it helps with my glasses & it does keep the early season bugs away.
My shooting isn't really affected either.
I wear nothing on my face, and pretty much quit wearing "camo". My success rate has not dropped.
Maybe the game see's me and is scared to death. :)
When hunting season arrives it's generally cold enough for me to wear Baclavia. My grandkids say that I have see thru hair and I'm not vain enough to start painting it.
spandoflage headnets 4 me!
Had a few more votes come in. Still pretty much 1/3 paint, 2/3 facemasks.
Thanks again for all the input.
OkKeith
I don't bother with anything for deer hunting, it's just not needed, I just grow a beard. For turkeys in a blind i use face paint or usually a burnt cork
I use a face mask, because there is no cleanup needed. In my younger days I used both burnt cork and face paint, but in recent years the convenience of the mask has ruled supreme. Luckily, the mask does not bother my shooting. The one drawback is that the mask I use is hot in the early season.

I know I kinda am bias towards Carbomask. But that stuff is really the bomb. Sometimes I am just lazy and throw on the net. But when I want to feel like a bada** I throw on some face paint, and when I don't want a bucket of grease on my face I wear carbomask. I am getting ready to film a new video for Bob(inventor of carbomask), and I think it will do him some good :)
The only thing you left out is that Carbomask cleans your pores too. It wont come off unless you try to get it off, which is great. It is literally engineered mud.

Face paint or nothing, can't shoot with a mask.
