Title: 10 strand???
Post by: 2Knives on April 21, 2010, 10:21:00 PM
Ok, I've read through alot of threads about skinny strings. To be honest, I get kinda lost.
I'm making strings for #45-#58 bows.
I've been making 10 strand strings of B50, without padding the loops.
I've been doing this for a while now, but since I've been reading...do you think it is good enough or am I asking for trouble??

I have made quite a few skinny strings but with low stretch string materials like D97,8125 and 450+ but don't do any with B50.With B50 I use 12 strands for bows under 50# and 14 strand for bows from 50#-60# and over 60# I use 16 strands.Going low strands with B50,it is a weaker string material and just seems to keep stretching.

Zipper/Roy Hall/Brackenbury...and some others.
I haven't had any break...yet  :)
If I read correctly B50 has a breaking strength of #49.6, almost #50
So theoretically I'm making a #500 string...they're all flemish strings that I make.
I used to make 12 strand for #50-#60 bows and have never had them fail.

Just wondering if anybody has actually made 10strand B50 and has actually had them break...or am I just paranoid.

What I remember reading those threads, was that those that actually "tested" the advertised ratings of poundage on the varied string materials, suggested that it was FAR LESS than what advertised!

I don't make strings, but I DO remember reading that with considerable interest.  Truth in advertising is a thing of the past apparently.

I'd go read them again... but that is what my aging memory recalls.  "What you read ain't what you git!"  :)

To me, a tad bit of overkill on the number of strands used in a string and maybe a tad bit loss of speed using more strands far outweighs the chance of a broken string. Even if a bow survives a string's breaking, one's sub-conscious never forgets. I've been trying out the new B55, supposedly a bit stronger than B50, but I'm still doing a minimum of 12 strands, padded, up to 50# and 14 strands doesn't bother me at all. A string breaking during a shot is one very memorable occurrence for sure. By the way, I cannot tell that B55 stretches any less than B50 in use.

I'm not a fan of the skinny strings. If one breaks, then you could ruin your bow and I'd hate to have one of my two Blacktails fail due to limb damage....especially since it takes over a year to get a new Blacktail. I shoot 13 and 14 strand Dyna97 with my Blacktails. Peace of mind is more important to me than a faster bow.
