I am looking at buying a bow in a month or two, 50#, preferably a shorter length, 56-58. I want something that is FAST, SMOOTH, and looking good the whole time. what are your suggestions
here are some of my canidates:
treadway blackswamp
a/h acs
centaur
???
Shrew..15 mo wait..
All three of those plus Morrison, Cari-Bow, Dryad, Blackwidow, Bob Lee, Tomahawk, Big Jim's, Cascade, Whisperstic, Shrew, Griffin, Black Swan, Chek-mate, Kanati, Maddog, RER, Schafer, Zipper, Griffin, and 10 or 12 more just on our sponsor list and probably 40 or so other bowyers you've never heard of that build a great bow! LOL.
Try to find someone or somewhere that you can go to shoot those bows that interest you. If you can make it to a big trad shoot in North Carolina there will be a lot of bows for you to try. That will probably save you some money in the long run in your search for the "magic bow". But, i guess that is part of the fun!
Do yourself a favour and try a Lost Creek if you get a chance. Great performance at a great price.

X2
get em all. They're all the best ;)
You will find that this very question has been asked before. Once not to long ago.
If you look at that thread you will find there is at least 50 different bows claimed to be the best. The real secret is to find the best one for you, and only you will be able to answer that. The nice thing about the thread is you can see some of the more popular brands enjoyed by some fellow TGer's.
Good luck on your Journey! :campfire:
I'm shooting a Shawnee right now. :goldtooth:
My vote would be a Toelke Whip.Mine is smoother than most recurves I've shot and has no hand shock.Dan is a pleasure to work with also :) :) :)

The one you shoot the best, don't buy without shooting. The fun is in the hunt.
The Black Swamp is very nice. I have one. For a one or two piece short r/d longbow, I would prefer a Shrew Classic Hunter. For a three piece short longbow my choice would be a Morrison. I am very impressed with the looks and design of the new Thunder Child by Big Jim. I also hear it shoots well. David Knipes says the Black Swan is great, and David knows his stuff! I'm sure there are many other great bows that would suit your fancy, so go shoot some and decide for yourself.

A Jason Kendall Kanati and Jim Reynolds MOAB would fall into the "among the best" category.
The best by far is the one that puts a $#!T eatin' grin on your face every time you think of it.
OK....seriously.
Think about what dollar range and features you want and narrow it down in your head. Then you might look at a few different bowyers that attract your attention.
I'm DONE buying now, but I was looking at the Centaurs with a smile.
All the top bows are seperated by personal preferences. Get some demo programs sent to you and spend some quality time with as many as you can.
A Thunder Stick of any kind.
In my opinion, the one you shoot the best, period. I would not, under any circumstances buy a bow without shooting an example of it first.
That said, skip the formalities, shoot a Morrison first, buy said Morrison and save yourself a lot of time finding the best ;)
Depends on how you define best? There are many with very close specs.. Is it to be a hunting bow or a 3D - target bow? If you can do a test drive. H
Your 3 choice are all right there. I'd add Morrison and RER is right there at a better price. Speed wise RER is just below the A&H and just above the Morrison. All within 7 feet and the poundages on mine is within 2.
I'd sure think if getting LONGER. They're more accurate.
Bowmania
If you type in "best longbow" using the search feature there are 15 pages of info available. Some threads are not applicable, but many of them aree very informative. Or try "R/D longbow".

They are all good!! Just get the one that best suits you. Can't go wrong with any of them.
Same issue here :)
I just sold my wheelie bow last weekend and have been looking at different longbows, I can't even sleep well figuring what to buy hahaha, I already read almost all of the 50+ "best longbow" trheads out there. Anyway my choices are narrowed to:
Treadway black swamp
Toelke whip
Mohawk
Maddog
So far Treadway is winning but since the waiting list on the treadway is long I might end up buying any of the others and ordering a Treadway for next year (unless I\\m lucky enough to found one ready) :archer:
just don't tell my girlfirend she thinks I sold my bow to get her a ring ;)
A used one that shoots good for you.No surprises that way and no darn wait times.
Come to the State shoot in Hickory the end of May and you can shoot lots of different bows.
Robertson has a test program and a shorter waiting period for new, but for his super accurate bows, unless you have a 25" draw, you would want a 62" or 64".
Go to the Baltimore trad show this year and try a few of them. I recently found that the Leon Stewart longbow hits where I look, are fast, and can be as beautiful as your imagination can come up with. Stewart Archery has a shorter longbow named the Slammer Special. Have never shot one, but sure looks to be awesome. If it shoots like a Slammer you should not be disappointed.
Lone Wolf Autumn Storm by John Maus!!! :)

A Frederick if you can find one, otherwise go talk to Ken Rohloff at Whippenstick Bows or Roy Hall at Navajo Bows.
I have shot the Centaur and the ACS and they are top notch. The are the second and third best R/D longbows I have shot.
The best one I have shot has been Super Shrew.
I ended up with a recurve though so that is what I use.
Luke, why don't you just come over and glue one up at my place yourself? You know what you like.Just get the wood and you got a bow. How easy is that?.

I made this one for Cory. Seems like it works OK. call me. Don
I was really hoping to hear Fedora Excellerator as I ordered one a couple of months ago. ;) In reality it doesn't matter as I have wanted a Fedora for a long time. A friend in Maryland has had one for 5 or 6 years and it is sweet shooting. Can't wait!! Thanks for letting me vent. :archer:

That's the best suggestion in this post....That's a GREAT OFFER !!! Talk about custom :)
I like my Hummingbird takedown best. Not a long wait. LCH
Best solution!!! Go see Batman or at least wait until the State shoot to try before you buy.
Thunderstick--can't beat it at anything close to the price.
2 short! MOHAWK 62"er! :archer: :goldtooth:
thanks everyone for your suggestions, i will definately wait to buy until shooting whatever it is i'm buying, so it looks like i t might be a while :archer:
Memorial day weekend will be here soon good buddy!
I love my Black Widow PL3 longbow....
Carlo from Italy....
I only shot a few LB(Border,BW,GP,Samick). But I shot many Recurves and my goto bow(out of RC and LB) is my Zipper SXT Longbow foam/carb.
I have to say I love my Morrison 56" Shawnee and my Lost Creek 54" longbows. Both shoot great with no hand shock.
Jim Jones Firefly. Love mine. Fast smooth and ultra quite. My is 55#@26" and 58" amo

... now repeat that over and over again until ya get it straight.
NOW GO DO THE BEST THING ya can - keep trying out as many bows as possible and MAKE UP YER OWN MIND AS TO WHAT SUITS YA "BEST" ...
... or just buy into everyone's opinions about what's good FOR THEM, buy what's recommended, and hope that yer feelin' lucky ... you feelin' lucky?
There all equal
I've liked every 21st Century bow I've shot. I bought 2 of them. I'm not sure how short they go though, my shortest is 62".
Another one you might want to try is a Dwyer Endeavor.
I just recently got mine from Dave and couldn't be happier. (Well, I would be happier if it came with an Arizona elk tag.)
