I put in with a buddy who is a member of Huntin fools?... I guess it gives him access to other hunters input/success.
I'm not exactly sure of what area it is but he said if we draw it will be the hunt of a lifetime. Supposed to be some good bulls there.

I also put in for a point with Bar H in Colo.
Yes Jim if you draw those are some awsome units 16D 1/st choice 16A 2/nd choice 16D 3/rd choice yes thase are very good units although tough to draw. You can't win if you dont play :readit:  I've been hunting the GILA for 18 yrs and there are some awsome bulls in there.Just make sure your hiking boots are well broken in you might have to burn some boot leather Good Luck
Those are all great units and hard to draw.
I hunted all of the 16's when the season was 3 weeks instead of being broken down into seperate hunts.
Good luck.
Good luck, I been in since 1999 and havn't drawn, usually end up buying a landowner tag!
Yea I miss the long season too,6 days is not enough time in the elk woods.
New Mexico Dept. of Game & Fish posts draw and animals taken success rates for each unit. There are a couple of areas even better than the Gilas, areas that are really once-in-a-lifetime hunts. The Gilas are really good, tho. The best thing about NM elk season is at least it's during rut, unlike muley season.
Good luck,
Eddie Paulsgrove
Jim, good luck, you'll need it those are tough draws! (grin)

Worth trying for. This is my 5th year of pursuing these units.
Eddie, curious as to what areas you like better than the Gila?
NM state record elk has been broken numberous times in unit 15..I know cause Ive seen them ..though they were in private land..U never know ..good hunting >>>---->
Now we wait.....
New Mexico is my favorite state for elk. My first hunt was 2007. I have been really lucky and drawn twice in three years (Unit 34) without using the outfitter pool!!! My first hunt 07 the bulls were in the rut and I missed a bull that was well into the 330 range (bull fever, me? never, oh well ) 2009 they split the season and I hunted the first half. The bulls were much harder to get in on and allot less vocal. I was lucky and found and area that was used allot and had enough days to set up an ambush. I got a young 5x5 and have a freezer full of protein!!
I'm in the draw again this year and have two years worth of scouting down and real good spots. I will be in the draw every year. I love this place:)
Good luck to all !!!!
I would be putting in for NM if I did stand a better than average chance of drawing a California Tule Elk tag this year, if I am lucky I will get the Elk slam.
A Tule tag is the Holy Grail of elk tags.....You must have a ton of points.....I don't think I'll have enough in this lifetime :)
Blake Good Luck !!
Draw results are posted and I drew unit 15.Hope others are finding green on their application too!
Yee Haaaaaa
UNSUCCESSFUL....again....but if you don't play you won't win...someday.
Congrats on the tag Charles!
Took me 11 years
Swing and a miss for me...
Hey, Snag, there's a truly once-in-a-lifetime draw for the Ville Vidal caldera in northern New Mexico. GREAT bull opportunities without going through 2 pairs of boots. And truly beautiful country, too. Incredible Muleys, too. Gilas are great too, though. New Mexico is a great hunting state (if you draw!)

I keep trying Eddie. I have a friend that has some property to the west of Pie Town (love that name!). I keep thinking it would be a fun trip to elk hunt and meet him for a visit.
