Title: Good to be home! And hunting on Marine Corps bases?
Post by: Bakes168 on April 13, 2010, 03:04:00 PM
Hey everyone, don't know if anyone remembers me cause I've been gone for a while.

I just returned home after completing Marine Corps recruit training and I gotta say I missed this site and the hunting world in general!

Anyway, I was wondering what kind of hunting the different Marine Corps bases offer?

Camp Pendelton has deer hunting, I believe there was also an Native American reservation up by Julian that offered hunting and fishing on a pay for play basis but that was over 30 ears ago Dont know about camp Lejune, but you should be able to find a place to hunt in the Carolinas. Thank you for your service to our country. May God bless you and keep you safe.

Semper Fi!  Thanks for your service.  All the Army posts I served on had decent to really good hunting.  Marine posts should be the same I would think.

Semper Fi Brother amen to going to Lejeune,I was with 3/2.You have to check with the base you go to for the rules and regs.I got a ticket for fishing with artificial bait and had to go to base court.Laws and regs. differ from base to base and may be different from outside the base game laws.

Havent been there in a decade but Camp lejeune had great hunting and several bow only areas that didnt get hit that hard once gun season starts. Croatan national forrest(swamp) very close with pigs and blackbear....29 palms, dirt n rocks, but Big Bear about an hour or so away, bears and mule deer, couple of other high desert wildlife areas for desert mulies......

Welcome home and thank you for serving - bless your heart.
Camp Pendleton was one of my favorite bases. Back when i was hunting there (fishing was great too) we didn't have bow areas/seasons, that i was aware of, but i know that's changed (Does that date me a little?  I retired in '72 - LOL). The hunting there was probably the best in Southern CA. For Deer it used to be particularly good in Area #1 (NE corner of base I think), anywhere around Case Springs area, and some of the low areas near the coast sometimes. For Rabbit the tank trails and gulleys out between Camp Las Pulgas and the rear gate there were fantastic (good eating), also in Woods Canyon (nearer the hospital then - good there for quail also). Dove all over the base, and some Waterfowl were good at times. My best friend was an Infantry Platoon Sgt and I was Radio Relay Chief for 7th Marine Regt. at Las Pulgas, and had a lot of "access to the field" - we terrorized the wildlife but didn't seem to make a dent in them - LOL. We both had big families and low pay, so fish & game's about all we ate. At that time they were also trying to establish Pheasant and Jungle Fowl to establish a huntable population

I just found this thread by accident but it may be one someone tried to call my attention to earlier this AM, and I deleted the message by accident. Anyway, glad to be of help, if it is any. good luck (and hunting) to you and yours.

Lejeune is Great too but i was ever so much more familiar with all the nooks and crannies of Pendleton - my buddy and I "lived" in the woods and I loved it there. Probably couldn't climb the firebreaks anymore - some are straight up   :archer:

Hey Brother!
Welcome home and like everyone else says, thank you very much for your service. My son-in-law is stationed right now at Camp Lejeune in N. Carolina, but soon headed overseas for security duty at one of the embassies. As I understand it there is some good hunting around that area for sure.
                           Good Luck!
                         Shoot Straight
                           God Bless

My son just got sent back from the Big Hunt at Marjah.  Seems a MATV and large IED's don't play well together.  When the vehicle landed back down from a 15' jump in the air his face fought the MK19, and well, his face lost.  His nose will look a bit differnt, now.
We hope to see him in the next couple of days when he gets released from the Naval hospital in Maryland.
His regular "camp" is LeJeune.  I will ask him if he wants a bow to go hunting with when he is back there.
Take care and shoot straight.

Semper Fi, Devildog!  DO NOT bring any weapons when you report in!  You are going to SOI and the living conditions are going to be very basic.  Wait until you report to your first command.  Then find out what your command's policy on personal weapons is.  You will not be allowed to keep a bow and arrows in your wall locker, it will have to be stored somewhere, your unit armory may not have space, so you will have to make arrangements before you get your bow.  There is great hunting on Lejeune and Quantico.  On Lejeune, you will have to pass a proficency test.  Any questions feel free to PM me.  Bill

It's an "Open Book" Test (at Lejeune) and 90% Safety and common sense. The test/authorities is/are more interested in making sure you read/know the safety rules and regs that apply, and freshening them in everyone's mind. Also it's good for three years now (used to be annual).
