Hi guys, after many stories about American boars (http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/DSCN0042.jpg) I want share a hunt for one of the most typical European big game.
OK Ok ! Pics and Story Please!!!
It is spring here, but no mercy for the more distructive big game that roams the bush.
The farmers don't love it,the Fish & game has to pay for the damages it makes;so the season in some areas is open all year around,24 hours a day and traps, spot light snypers, well organised group of hunters with guns and dozens of hounds.
So a poor single bowhunter has hard time to compete with all those bloody competitors.
:wavey:
Dang right
Two knives, a saw, and a broken carbon arrow with a bloody broad head.....sounds like a great adventure is going to follow.
:campfire:
I'm leaving for a boar hunt tomorrow....keep the story coming!
We need more story please... :readit:

But sometime a good guy has friend with a private property in a good spot where no hunters have access.
I have taken a good number of Boars on this nice place during the last few years.
This is my Old World tree stand.
The spot is perfect because I am on the shade and it doesn't matter the wind direction you are always out of their noses here.
OOHHH Boy here we go :campfire: :jumper:
Great start....
:campfire:
YA! looking forward to the rest of this
keep it coming
:archer:
Beautiful pictures Felix!

Well, when you say a confortable stand!
The feeder,I don't remember the brand.LOL
Actually the feeder is my friend that has his entry door less from the bait.
Don't think it was easy to have the boars there.
He took 3 months before being able to have them in that spot. The distance is around 10 yards, but if they can't smell you they can see you moving or sneaking on the leaves. (http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/DSCN0055.jpg)
I know you want some action! This is the arrow I found some 30 yards on its runaway trail.
Nice.
Very pretty area :)
They are usually impredictible and change the time they come. But in the last few days another couple of boars were in the property and they started the competition. The bigger boar started to come before dark to take its rights.15 days earlier with some snow falling we saw the bigger boar chasing the other 2 away from its pasture, not a real fight but some tusks in the ass of the bigger one of the 2.The big boar sometime have a younger male with them that we call "Master of the Horse"-SCUDIERO.That same night I was able to close the distance on the 2 that were feeding among hazel trees. The wind was good and I was on a trail moving without noise, half hidden by some bush. They were lower and unaware of my presence. So I focused on the bigger one and at the dim light I released as it moved on broadside. It was cold and I was very excited so I made a bad release and the arrow went really far from its target, finishing in the soft ground. It runned away some 30 yards but then it stopped, since that bow is really quiet and they relaxed.
ah, beautiful sunny italy ... and boars! i need a trip back to my 'home'!
I practice hard everyday and i am a decent shooter,so to miss that boar was discouraging, but the action was still on;the smaller boar moved closer still feeding on the nuts,i was afraid that the bigger one could see me from its new position so i froze since the other gave me a 18yards broadside shoot. The light was very low at thet moment but I could see the front leg,I picked the spot and the arrow went just a inch lower than the chest.Sending both the boar to a safer places.
I couldn't belive to have missed such a easy target again. But this is what makes traditional hunting so exciting, nothing is granteed here.
 :campfire: Beautiful country!
great stuff waiting for more
Love the details....keep 'em coming.
Anyway back to the feeder;I hunted the place other 4 times after the misses. The place is 1 hour drive from my home. The big boar was arriving before night so I took a dinner at home and then I left for the hunt. The first time I arrived when it was already there and it saw me.I runned away and didn't come for 2 night, then started to come late at night.I went 2 times, one nothing showed up;the second I saw it crossing the field you see in the pics, but it didn't come.It circled the place from far away and altrough the wind was good it preferred to go for chestnuts. When Thursday i decided to leave a little earlyer with the sun still up.Before dark i saw it coming from below me,crossing the open field just before dark.It was used to make some big circle, checking the wind like a old boar bear.many times it made circle coming and going away always closing a little bit the distance.I am in a position from where I can see most of the sourraunds being unseen since my place is at a very acute angle above the field.Just when it is next to the bait we are close and almost at the same level as you have seen on the pics.
This is my view to the field that it crosses
Beautiful country!
The trees with the flowers look just like our Florida "flowering dogwood", what species are those my friend?
Sorry,I have already posted this pic.
When it approces the bait it become more nervous, making jumps running away resting with its ears araised to listen.there are many disturbing noises around, but it looks that it can judge the distance and the danger of them.Don't think it is a easy animal, they are heavy hunted in any legal and illegal manner,so if they became mature animals it means they are pretty smart. The last time it was at shooting distance and broadside from me he heard the crick of my elbow join while i was reaching the full draw.Any kind of noice at this distance will send it in the deep of the bush. For this reason I had to give up my Bear Custom Kodiak with the original quiver that make a squick when I draw.nothing really disturbing, but with a single boar enough to spook it.The sowswith the piglets are all another story, but the boars are really much more nervous and caucious.
Those are cherry trees,sendero.
Killie,I was asking myself what Passaic is.Maybe a new bow from Bob Morrison that we don't know yet?

the scenery is gorgeous, where in italy?
But there is a end to everything and patience and perseverance bounty the dedicated TGanger. It came close after all its feints,I was ready with the bow arm half arised in position, its head on the ground, but the body still hidden behind the pine tree limb you see in the first pics.It was feeding still at an unshootable position, but I relaxed and enjoied every single second of that long wait, listening the noise it was making chewing the corn 8-9 yards away.It made a couple of steeps following the stripe of corn, with the vitals well exposed. But i waited because it could still see me drawing the bow,I was waiting for one mor step when its head would have been behind the pole(always in the pic).I was thinking that the biggest joy for us is in the preparation of the shoot, after it is hard work.It made it its eyes were behind the log.I started drawing in slow motion afraid of any small noise, but the shelf rest on my recurve is dead quiet and at the release the arrow entered low in the leg pocket and then everything went on Fast Forward a grofrom the boar and the frantic run.I moved fast back to see it running away 50-70 yards and it desappeared behind a small hill and some bush. Its race was noisy and like it had fallen a couple of times. Then silence.Time to wait.
Rob,here we are in NW of Italy at the foothills of the Alps. The Spring here is really amazing with endless blooming and parfumes. It is home of 150 different qualities of excelllent wines just in this side of the Country. With much less Italian it would be an excellent place where to live.LOL.Food and wine at its best.
This is an awesome story Felix. Great pics.
Thanks Randy.
I really need to come over there and hang out with you. Your country and hunting country is so beautiful.
So it is almost time for the final pic.
After the proper time I went to look for the arrow. No arrow no blood, but I was confident from the noises I had,I followed a trail on the grooving grass with my blood trail light since now it was really dark.I was using a Gerber Carnivore, but not sure they work that great,I will post this on another thread.Anyway I was expecting some good blood trail having used a Wensel Woodsman 3 bl,I have mostly used 2 blade broadheads, but this hogs have a very thick skin and fat in the winter and early spring. After 30 yards I found the back of the arrow,my Carbon Express Eritage 250 broke. The blood was bright and with bubbles,GOOD.Just the last 10"had not entered the pig,but the blood drops, visible on the pic, indicated some heavy blood pressure coming out.Once again very small and few drops of blood on the ground.I kept going on the same general direction other 30-40 yards, when a black big blob was on the field.Trail end.70Yards total.
Randy I love WY,but here is not so cold and windy.
Perfect shot my friend.
This side is the exit side. The arrow made the holes but for some reasons the front end with the BH remained inside the boar.
Great story Felix and a fine hog. I can well imagine sitting back in the shadows, waiting to sit at the grill eating pork, sipping wine. Your country is beutiful, I was there in the late 80's
CONGRATS ON A FINE PIG!
Chuck
Randy, you know you can come over when you want,I think you'll love chamois hunting in the mountain. It is like to hunt the Mountain Goats without drawing.

The bow is a Black Widow SAX 58"-56#-@29" with a 595grs Eritage 250-WW 150BH and 120 shaft insert.

Last smile!!
I have a great "lost in the pig field" story I would love to share with you sometime, and maybe re-trace my steps in the day lite some 25yrs later. Thanks for your kind offer. well done again brother.
Cacciatore, that is a very exciting story and a beautiful hog. The scenery looks just like where I hunt in California.
Spot on.
Can this be the reason of such a lack of blood trail? The heart stopped working and there was not blood pressure?
Bjorn,we both share good wine and nice country.
Danny,I can't wait for your pig story.
Ooh, big pig!
Congratulations, Felix, on a fine hunt.
Oh, and I think most any place is better with fewer humans!
Killdeer :wavey:

Oh man, what a great story!!!
Here I am in small town Michigan, USA, on the edge of my seat!!!
When pigs know your after them, they get a special kind of sneaky, and then it takes a special kind of sneaky to get them.
"Bowhunting bloodbrothers"...you said it man.

Congratulation Felix, but what is this ugly bow you've used ;) ? Doesn't look like a Robertson to me !
Ciao Felix,
very nice story and good boar. That's a good trophy boar for your hunting zone.
I have to check for a new hunting zone because my old hot spot is over now.
Ciao Felix,
congratulations for a great hunt and thank you for the story and the beautiful pictures. Italy in spring is definitely the most beautiful country in europe.
There are many boars here in Bavaria/Germany, but we still can't bowhunt them, what a shame. Well, the pictures wouldn't be so lovely anyway!
Congratulations once again, keep hunting,
Bernd
Perfect shot
Ciao Bernd,
I hope our german bowhunter brothers has the freedom to hunt with stick and arrows in the next future. Aniway here in Italy is not so easy because many laws in practice impede bowhunting.
Waidmannsheil.

The chef
Great job! Thanks for sharing a good story and some beautiful counrty. :campfire:
My kind of story with a happy ending. What part of Italy are you hunting? My father's side of the family is from the Llublana area just north of Trieste. The borders have changed a lot over the years in that area (now Slovenia) and its not in Italy but it is one of the few places in the world I would be willing to travel at my age.
Great shot and story Felix congrats. There is one small problem though. There are no Italian recipe's utilizing pork???
Great pics and story, thank's for sharing!
TJ,read the past pages;there is a excellent recipe with chocolate.I'll try to post some in the next days, most of them utilize wine that here is expensive like water but really some of the best.
Mike that isn't my to go bow but it is a good shooter,it is a Cocobolo SAX,2006.
Awesome story! Great boar!
Felix,
Thank you so much for sharing your hunt with us. It was a wonderful story, and well told. The pictures of the Italian countryside were breathtaking, and added so much to the thread.
Great story of hunting within another speck of earth that screams a Creator.
Congratulations Widow Bro.
Chocolate?
You might be a great hunter, but there is something a little funny about piggy bonbons.
Heehee, bare-bones big boar bonbons....
Sorry. I had a long day at work.
Makes me silly. :o
Killdeer
Beautiful pics, country and story. All that mention of fine, cheap wine sounds real good.Congratdulations.
Beautiful country there Felix...great boar too. That looks very much like my Oklahoma hog from this spring. I am counting the days to when we can hunt Italian boars together. See you soon.

Felix,
Great story and hunt. Now's the time to enjoy the fruits of your experience......break out the Chianti........no....better yet, break out the Brunello Di Montalcino....the good stuff has to be cheaper in its home country than over here.
Living up to your nickname there Felix ;) Well placed and enjoy the bacon!
Tony,up here we have Barolo,Barbaresco,Barbera,Dolcetto and other 146 quality of wine. But from time to time I enjoy the Brunello too. :bigsmyl:
