If you're like me you have several hats you like to wear hunting.
I too have several I like but I'm still searching for the "perfect hat"
I've looked all over the web and have even ordered a couple that I thought was it but ended up returning them. I thought I had found it at Bass Pro and went to a bunch of effort to have them track one down only to be disappointed when I got it in hand.
I know the hat exists, I've seen a few bowhunters in photos wearing it.
Let's see yours please!
Thank you!
God bless,Mudd
So...are you saying the hat in your avatar didn't work out for you? :biglaugh:
No kidding Mudd. The perfect hat is a tough quest. If you find it let us all know.
I like the hat in my avatar but it's not "my perfect" hat. I haven't found it yet. My wife says I have a hat fetish..lol I can't seem to own too many hats and yes sir I do find a way to wear them all, just not at one time.
I have been known to wear several different hats all in one day. It doesn't take much to get me to switch hats either..lol I love hats! I just want to find the one that makes me not want to switch around.
God bless,Mudd
PS I have one that's very close but it's too heavy to wear all the time as it's made of leather.
Hey Mudd,
I think the hat Minnie Pearl use to wear on the Grande Ole Opry might be the one. L.O.L.
Good luck, I'll keep my eye out.
Bob
Hey Mudd! Post a pic of your "almost" perfect hat.
Maybe we can help ya out.
Another mid-life crisis Mudd???

If you have a head as perfect as this one it is a shame to put a hat on it. Even knowing that I don't leave camp without something on my head.
I get a lot of mileage out of just a few kinds, a baseball type cap for work, the basic watchcap, a felt fedora, and a shortbilled flat hat. I have some really nice western hats that I wear when I go horse tradin or working in our booth at hunting expos, but those 10X beaver stetsons don't get to go hunting. I don't think there is one perfect hat for me. Just depends on the day and the situation... I would like to get one of those Stormy Chromers for next winter maybe... You can't have too many hats.
This is good headgear for hunting pigs in West Texas on a warm day.
I like this hat for hot weather. Keeps my balding head from getting sunburn. Short bill doesn't interfere with shooting. My favorite cap for Spring bear hunting, sitting in a hot blind or for a cap to wear while using my ghillie suit. Just doesn't get in the way. I have copies of this cap in black, blue, grey, olive and brown.

Its hard to beat this model when you have some hard work ahead of you like gutting an elk, breaking horses or putting up hay.
This is one of my favorites. Soft brim doesn't interfere with shooting. Brim is wide enough to keep the water from running down your back when it rains.

This last one is also a good go to headcover. I keep half a dozen of these in my dufflebag when I go to elk camp. I use one to sleep in. I like to use this one to hunt in if I know its going to be getting cold. I like to put on a new one every 2-3 days to keep the smell down to a minimum.

I love this one

but this is my "go to" kill hat

I have most of the ones M.Sherpa does, my biggest problem is finding hats to fit my fat head. Most of the time XL-XXL just makes it. If you think that can become expensive, try find a motorcycle helmet to fit...lol!
I have been waring the same felt hat for over 30 years. (http://www.buffsblackwidow.com/images/bushbuck2009.JPG)

£ TGangers on a elk haunting camp with their prefer (http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/ElkCamp-CO2009.jpg)ed hats.
A hat is like a woman they may look great and have a nice shape, but they may be expensive and not suit your needs or wear well in the long run!. A good hat and a good women are hard to find!.I found my Marine Corps jungle boonie cover is the most all around hunting hat that I have.
You guys better hope that Ron LaClair doesn't see this post. I love my hats but Ron is obsessed. He truly has one for every occasion. Rumor has it that he has gotten one for every birthday since the day he was born. That makes for quite a collection. :banghead:
Where is Jack Whitmire Jr??????
He has the coolest camo (Poppa Smurff) hat you ever did see :bigsmyl:
Have anyone of you ever tried a Barmah hat?
Im thinking on buying a kangaroo leather one.
I just purchased the "Fred Bear" hat from 3rivers, looks good, fits nice but its not a good choice for our HOT weather this time of the year.
this is my favorite
SA army, used to belong to my Dad, iv been hunting with it from almost the beginning. Its done some mileage over the years.
One of my prized possessions !

also have an old camo ball cap that looks like its been eaten and shat out by and elephant several times over...its retired now though.
Cool pic Andy, can you post the story?

I had this one made for me by my buddies wife. It is fleece with a short brim and it doesn't interfere with the string. It even folds up small enough to fit in my pocket.

Some nice looking head gear fellas.
Felix, on my blurred screen you could pass for
Norm Blaker.
Andy, Can you show a better close up of that hat?
Sherpa, A nice wool watch cap has been on my head since the mid 80's when I had one gifted to me by Uncle Sam. My brother had one that our real uncle had given him when we was just younguns. I always wanted that hat so I joined they USN and got one for FREE. I had a cool Voyager hat when I was small, had a cool tail about 3' long that could be a scarf.
Other than that MUDD, I'm still looking myself. Thanks for the post, I hope to see something that suits me. But I do dig that RH hat you now sport.
Chuck

LOVE MY DAY ONE WOOL CRUSHER IN ASAT, AND A FLEECE CRUSHER HAT.
A Cabela's wool crusher...got one in brown also. But I'll also sport a ballcap, fleece beanies, knit beanies...whatever the urge is at the moment

I'm getting one from Whip at Compton this June...it will be a nice looking hat!
Josh
Here is what I wear in most days unless it's freezing!

My early MI gun doe season orange requirement hat (bow hunting only):
All time lucky hat! I've killed every deer wearing this hat (I have it with me at all times). My mom bought it for me when I was 12 for my first hunting season many years ago.
Thats a cool hat Josh(last one), I bought one the day I killed my first deer ever. still have it and break it out each year. I have piled up a BUNCH of deer with that thing on my head. I should make one outta felt.
Chuck
This is my fishin' hat, nothing fancy but it keeps the sun out of my eyes and my neck from getting too burnt.

It's funny how many photos I have with animals wearing that hat! I do have it with me at all times for luck. I think it's only been washed three times.
Josh
I always wear boonie hats.
The woodland one is the one that I've hunted the most in.
Most of the time I have a bandana on under it. Wet it down when it's hot or throw a thin stocking hat on under it when its cold.
I wear a 3-d leafy boonie
Tough to beat a Stormy Kromer, I have several.
Short brim, wool, ear flaps when needed.
For warm weather I wear a Univ. of Michigan camo baseball cap(I fear it's brought them bad luck though, the last two years).
I like Filson oil cloth crushers when it rains.
I have had this old cowboy hat since I was twelve. The band was stuffed with newspaper to make it fit when I got it as a Christmas present from my grandmother in 1982. The band is long since gone and it is stretched to fit my head just right. If I am in camp it is on my head. The short-brimmed hat that my son, Reed is wearing is my favorite archery hat now. Big Jim sells them for $8. They come in brown, green or orange camo and have a wire lined brim that can be shaped or turned up. Great hats!

Better picture of Reed's hat.

Here you go Chuck, its a bush hat, snap-up on each side or wear down...comes with optional rear-veiw mirror for stop lions sneaking up on you.

Feliciano, the Red hartebeest i shot at 15 meters over in Namibia, first one iv shot with a bow, was a good feeling perfect shot. The Elephant was further north up in Namibia where there are still good numbers roaming around, went in to take some photo's and watch him, very cool animal to get close to on the ground.
I can immagine Andy,is it aggressive? For sure your hat will settle it down.
My wife and I designed and sewed them. It is my favor hat by far. Wore mine today working outside. Mighty chilly in Darby today.

I too dig the Kromer. Bought this one from Ron E'Claire at Compton's the first year he sold the short brim one's there. It's about worn out now (falling apart) and Kromer discontinued the short brims :( .
My new hat has worked out well so far. This was the very first time I wore it in the woods. Picked it up in Strasbourg, France when over there visiting my in-laws. Wool tweed, insulated, with crafty fold down ear flaps. Short brim that doesn't interfere with my bowstring, and I can pass for an Old Fart if the light is right.....

Ryan, I have one like that but I can't pass for an old fart ,cause I am an old fart no matter what the light is.

I love the way it looks but the brim is too big. inflexible and it's way too heavy.

Is that a Barma? Looks good, but I see what ya mean about the brim.
I don't have a clue as to what it is, I found it in a garage sale. I liked it and it was 2 bucks. I've been wearing it ever since.
God bless,Mudd

Maybe you'd like a Stetson snowden model. It's crushable wool with only a 3" brim.

LOL - you know, it's hard (for me) to take a self close-up, and smile at the same time (kinda like walkin' and chewin' gum at the same time). I tried about six, and deleted the others.
Anyway I wear my "Avatar Hat" for everything except hunting, the buttons/pins would catch in the brush and perhaps reflect light flashes. I found this (cheap one) in WalMart over 8-10 years ago, love it and have never seen another like it (for back-up), darn it. It is net under the cutout leafs and great for aeration during the early season here. When the weather gets colder I put on a watch cap (toboggan) under the hat and pull the watch cap down over my ears and back of my neck to keep the wind off. I also put on a face net after I get in the tree or on stand, hot or cold. Brim is compleatly flexible, BTW.
Warning: Don't let the kiddies see these pics - I don't want to scare the poor little dears - :scared:

that looks like a great hat for bowhunting, and at a great price
Mr Dudley, how does one get a hold of "Big Jim" ??? I love that hat.
I use many different hats when hunting but this one is usually under them all.

I'm looking for a pic of Rusty's favorite
Mike
Mudd if you like that style and would like other camo patterns take a look at... The Knit Tree. I have a couple of their hats in 100% merino wool and really like them. You can pick the camo colors ( 3 colors per hat) good quality stuff. Their site isn't the best, Just find the link word for Camouflage Knits->
I'm a big fan of plain jane ball caps. Have one that's a nice neutral gray that I'm almost always wearing.
However, I really want a Stormy Kromer. Those things are bad a$$.
not a hunting photo but best i could find, gotta love the good ole stormy kromer, goes great with my favorite vest
Here's the hat I got from Sierra Trading post.

ps: I don't need to tell anyone that I'm not much of a photographer or artist..lol
I knd of lost this thread...sorry for not responding to Mike's request for contact inofrmation. I have had three pms about Reed's hat. I am pretty sure that Jim is a sponsor here. His number is 229-344-6617. Order a bow from him while you have him on the phone.
