Title: Wind drift & broadhead penetration
Post by: Zander on April 04, 2010, 07:03:00 PM
Hi guys!  I just came back from the bow range in Salida CO.  With the way the wind was blowing, my arrows were corkscrewing all the way to the target bales.  I'm just wondering what other people's opinions would be on a hunting situation with broadheads & wind drift.  I'm looking for opinions on the best type of broadheads in these situations. Please state your type of broadhead with your opinion and why.

My bow & setup are tuned very well, but the wind around here is horrible.

Try to tune with the least fletching possible.
A feather burner can lower the profile of your existing arrows.

I agree with the above, but when I am hunting in a real strong wind I also make every effort to shoot directly into the wind for any shots over 10 yards. At least that works for me.

I doubt if broadhead choice will help much.I have been shooting heavy, high FOC arrows and it is no trouble to hit the mark in high wind but the arrow flight is not good and penetration is noticeably reduced.I just haven't shot lighter arrows at the same time to compare.I am shooting 5" fletch,so I imagine smaller fletch wouldn't hurt.

I do know that the bare shafts are less affected, but the wind works on them too.

I had trouble with the large Magnus two blade 160 grain. We were convinced at the time it was the ultimate for us.  Could get them sharp enough to shave a cat, we had numerous pass thru kills with excellent blood trails.  One day I took a thirty yard shot at a large sleepy buck with the wind coming from behind me on the right side. The arrow took a side step like I have never seen before, luckily it missed the deer. I reshot the arrow back to my position and it shot fine, reshot again back to where the buck was and it side stepped again. I went to single bevel broadheads after that and no longer have a side stepping problem with quartering tail winds. I use either 5.5" or 5" helical depending on the bow.  I could have stayed with the big Magnus and just never take a shot in the kind of wind situation, but then I need all the help I can get because I do not hunt a areas that are overrun with large bucks, just lots of people to deal with messing up the deer movements.
