Title: My beginning my first homemade bow & arrow
Post by: Cody Roiter on April 03, 2010, 06:52:00 PM
Guys,

Sorry I have been away for the past few weeks.. Had to take care of some family stuff that on.. Last week I lost a good friend and family memeber my uncle Bob.. Who was my granddads brother.. Both my uncle and granddad grew up in a hunting family in the 1940s and 1950s.. Well my granddad was very big into archery from the late 1940s to about the 1970s... So once I started hunting and fishing and taking on archery at the early age of 10.. I started out with a Bear all glass bow at the age of 10.. Then at age 11 I got my hands on Fred Bears the archer's  bible and seen some wood bows and told my self Heck I can even make a bow and a few arrows.. Well at the age of 10 I would shoot all the bows my granddad had at his house.. He had a few Bears and the old Pearson longbow he shot his first deer with ( which I have now) Well the bow that I'm most sad that I dont have is a 1959 or 1960 Bear Kod I know it was a 1959 or 1960s I have a few pics of me shooting it.. All I know is that it was around 65 pounds and was an I-beam riser and  was 60"  ( I wish I knew where it was now    :knothead:      :knothead:      :knothead:   ) But After I could not pull the Bear kod back.. I started on my own and very first bow and set of arrows... The date on the bow is 5/17/02 so I would have been 13... Well this is where my Uncle comes into play.. I went over to his place with the stave of elm and had him cut it out on his bandsaw.  As he was the only person I knew that had one.. Well after we cut it out I started working on it... ( As you can see its not no work of art) Well in about 3hrs I had it done and put a string on it.. Yes I didnt even know what tiller was at the time so it didnt matter if the one limb bent more then the other LOL.. Well lets fast forward  to last week.. After I found out that my uncle went home to the happy hunting grouds I took off of work and went rigth there to be with my family.. After a few hrs spent with them my other uncle said Cody look what I found hangin up in the barn I said what was it.. He said it has your name and date.. So I went and seen what it was once I got to where he was I was like NO WAY !.. Thats my first bow I ever made over here back in 2002.. I said man I didnt think I still had this and ir was gone forever.. Once the bow was put aside and was looking around some more in my uncles hunting room I found one of my first hunting arrows I made with a Ace broadhead.. I'm like there is no way this happing..... Well guys to make a very long story short I just would like to say thanks to my uncle for keeping this old junk laying around in your workshop and thanks for all the time spent with me hunting and fishing you will be missed..

Cody

Cody, you are a lucky guy. I wish that I had had folks around when I was young that were into bowhunting. It would have been trad stuff when I was a kid. LOL  thanks for sharing the story and good luck with your endevors. Don
