I am getting the custom bow bug, but I am not sure what wood I want to get. Help!
What are your favorite woods or combinations of woods in riser and limbs for both performance and looks?
Pics of would be very helpful! ;)

I'm real simple, Yew or Osage limbs with a cocobola riser...
There are too many beautiful wood combos to choose from. I do really like my osage limbed, black walnut risered, one piece, 56" Pronghorn.
This might be my new favorite. Wenge and bacote.

Wenge and Bocote does indeed rock!!!!!!! :archer:

I've always wanted an Osage and Purple heart riser with Osage/bamboo limbs. Just never seemed to make it happen.
Any darker wood with Osage, how can you go wrong!!!
I have an osage and shedua bow. I think they compliment each other real well. But I do like simple bows... I want it to look like it was carved out of one piece of wood. My next bow will probably be all one wood. I had an all bocote bow once. I think that can be a REAL nice bow but it depends on the quality and grain of the wood.
In summary... I think a real nice piece of wood is what makes a bow. You can have a boring piece of cocobola that needs complimented or a fantastic piece that needs nothing with it.
Osage and osage. Having said that I have a macassar ebony and cherry bow on order :bigsmyl:
Too many good combos..that's why I keep buying Blacktail Bows!
My personal favorite is highly figured curly maple limbs with rosewood (take your pick: bolivian, brazilian, cocobolo, etc...) in the riser. Too many nice combos, though. I also really like osage and cocobolo...Mike
Bocote and red elm.
George
I like a dark wood such as Ziricote or Macassar Ebony combined with either Bocote or Zebrawood with some lighter Maple accents. Cocobolo with Osage or Juniper also looks really nice! Snag is right...this is part of what keeps us coming back for more...
Wow, those are some pretty bows! Too many combos for sure. But it's fun to keep trying!
I really like the look of Bocote paired with a darker wood like coco. But I do have one with bacote and osage that looks really sweet.
Rose Oak King Panther
Cocobolo and Zebra

Macasser ebony and bocote riser is my favorite with bacote limbs or snakeskinned limbs
snakewood and wenge riser with yew limbs
cocobolo riser and yew limbs
I like this combo from Arnold Smit!

I think my next one is gonna be Moradillo limb veneers w/ moradillo, pau ferro, in the riser with some osage tip accents and overlay accent on the riser.
bocote with any dark wood for accents or even just Bocote by itself
I have a Killum with spalted myrtle limb veneers, Cocobolo riser with ebony flares, it is a really pretty bow. but I saw one just like it with juniper limb veneers and that is even nicer. But I really like osage and bocote too, man how does a guy pick they are all so nice!
Predator Anniversary (you can see on their website -- I have #31). Macassar ebony in the riser looks like "leather". I'm having one made now by Rose Oak: Leopardwood and Bolivian rosewood in the riser with Imbuia limb veneers. While it isn't wood, I think Phenolic (black) looks very good in a riser grip area and it is tough as nails. I have a Fox High Sierra with Shedua and Coccobol in the riser and Osage under clear glass limbs. The limbs started out fairly bright yellow but quickly aged to a very dull yellow which is a terrific look. One thing the bowyer, Brandon Stahl told me was not to put too many different woods in the riser and limbs or the bow starts to look like its made of spare scraps. By the way, I have several customs that I really like but I think Stahl's bows (if you like recurves) are fantastic! I have two on order- a one-piece Super Wildcat and his new TD Super Wildcat. His build time is very long -- his waiting list is December 2010 at this moment but after trying out his loaner Super Wildcat I know I won't anticipate receiving a new bow more than I will this one--I'll be fit to be tied a month out!
One more thing. A great site to see different combinations is Predator's site at Hunters Niche. Go to bows in stock and you'll see many combinations for the riser. Brandon Stahl's web site (Rose Oak Creations -- sponsor here) also has terrific pictures. If you can tolerate a high-gloss finish the Phenolic riser's (Grip Half) look like obsidian glass --beautiful!)
Oh yeah, I like a colorful accent strip in the riser -- the Inlaid Double V by Stahl is way cool. Fades on back of riser and limb tips look great in a contrasting color or even white. I'd love to get some sheep horn on the limb tip overlays and back of the riser grip some day.
(http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/DSCF0009-2.jpg)Cocobolo/Ebony is one of my overall favorite. The dense grain and heavy mass weight make them very stable too.
(http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/DSCF0005-5.jpg)Same combination different bowyer,same beauty.
Another Robertson,with the Pierce P (http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/DSCF0006-4.jpg)oints inlays.
(http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/DSCF0007-2.jpg)This combination makes a small riser more stable and forgiving adding mass where you need it to this Morrison Shawnee 15" riser
(http://i765.photobucket.com/albums/xx293/dazzafelix/DSCF0004.jpg)This is another one nice combination with Ebony/Moradillo,i call this bow Chocolate beauty.
Bocote and Cocobolo. Beautiful and heavy.

imo, what really matters most is the limb core and veneers, and i'm a big believer in tonkin cane, bamboo, or actionboo, for super smoothness. the rest of the bow materials are mostly all about personal aesthetics.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. You all have some beautiful bows. When I get mine I will have to throw it on here as well.

Osage, osage and more osage...

As someone who's used just about every limb core I can think of, I like ash or maple limbs with brown fiberglass, and any sort of diamond wood riser. The close second for risers material is a tie between bocote and cocobolo.
Ash and maple just seem like good limbs to me. I like bamboo for "workability" as it's easy to make a lamination from bamboo, but I just like the way ash or maple shoots. Can't explain it.
I think the leopard looking wood JC had was the coolest wood I have seen.
Caccitore,
What bow is that one with the double accent strip that flares at the top and bottom of the riser (your 3:06am post 2 pictures above)? Wow!
Cocobolo and Yew or Cocobolo and Osage.

I like Myrtle as the lighter wood. Cocobolo, Rosewood, or Ebony as the dark wood.
I've always been Osage. (http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z314/Bowferd/Bow%20Pics/Talon/DSC02769.jpg) (http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z314/Bowferd/Bow%20Pics/Talon/DSC02767.jpg)
for me it would be the anniversary predator bow also! best looking combo I've seen yet
cocobolo and any darker or lighter accent wood.
Bowwild,it is a Blacktail Elite VL.
Thanks! It is a beauty! YOu have an eye for good looking bows. Have you seen the Rose Oak bows by B.Stahl? I have 2 on order.
