As some may know, My favorite bow is the Shrew & Griffin by John McCullough and Gregg Coffee. Both bowyers used to make beautiful selfbows. Most people have seen some of Gregg's selfbows as one seems to pop up on the St Judes Auction each year. But I'm sure most have NOT seen any of John's selfbows.
Just thought ya'll might like to see a McCullough bow that preceded the Shrew & Griffin. I've had this bow for quite sometime. If anyone has another McCullough selfbow please post a couple pictures...Doc

Very nice Doc!
Wow Jeff, that is really one fine looking stick. You need to post pics of one of your rare bows every week...that would be quite an educational thread.
Headed to Tignall this weekend, have a line on some private property with "hog problems". If it works out like these folks say, we'll have another spot for us to hunt when you come down.
JC,
I'll be down April 15th for a couple of weeks just after dropping my Taxes in the mail!
Yes, nice bow, Doc. Handled alot of John's selfbows back in the early '90s. I have one of the last BBO bows he made from a piece of 40 year old osage I had. Sorry, no pics at this time.
Very nice bow,sweet!
Pretty bow Doc!
Nice Bow and Pics. I second J C's thought, Post new pics every week of a different bow!
That is an AWESOME bow!!!!!
 Very Nice! I wasn't aware :banghead:
Wow Doc what a treasure!!! I cant wait til you open your museum to the general public.I too was unaware that he was a selfbow guy so your post was more than bow porn to me it was also educational.Very, very cool.Thanks.
ttt...just thought ya'll might like to see something different. Doc
great stuff....Happy easter...Marco
John used to come to the BBTC (then called the MATC) in B'more. He and a buddy who built nothing but arrows, would show up and they were such great guys to talk to. I bought a 54# RACO longbow of John's. A simple red elm/glass longbow. Zero handshock, smooth... but I never shot a longbow quite as well as a recurve (grip thing I guess) and then after shoulder surgery, I never got back to 54# draw... and it just sits. But I always will have fun memories of John McCullough and a few follow up calls to him.
Doc Nock,
It's always great to hear a few yarns about John...that's kinda why I posted this. Thanks
Man that is a beauty. And one of a kind.
The shrew type bows are my favorite also in the one-piece ultra-light class. Amazing little bows.
Thanks for giving a peek.
very very Nice!
Beautiful bow!
Work of art you've got there Jeff!
Thanks for sharing..
Very nice!
Thanks for sharing some history.
That is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Doctari,
Cool bow, Thanks for showing.Where was that one hiding ??
Tippit,
That is only half the story. I was pretty green when I bought that bow. Never shot a long bow grip I liked...they fought me or vice versa. I tried John's handle and it felt "right." It was the only one in low enough poundage I could handle...at 54#.
I put down 3/4 of the price to hold it for 4 hrs. John just shook his head and laughed. I ran around finding every longbow officianado I could find and made them shoot it. To a person, they all looked at me and went, "SWEEET! How much DIDN'T this cost?
At hour 3.5, I paid the balance and went to shoot a round. I whupped everyone in the group till I stepped on a MD slime covered rock and slid into a pool and broke the fibula on my left leg. I still hobbled about and shot 2 more courses that weekend...Paid a handsome price for being stubborn and a great price for a bow. Saddens me I can't shoot that weight anymore.
John never forgot that in his several return trips... said nobody ever put down that much money for a bow for a few hours "hold."
He was friends with Jim Stepp then and they'd worked up a way to retro fit Jim's dovetail take down apparatus.
John is one class piece of work...and a hoot to boot! Miss seeing him and many other bowyers back East here.
:clapper: Tippit,
Sure nice to see that bow again. I have always regreted selling that bow. Any chance you would be willing to sell that back to me?

Dan, NO chance what-so-ever :) I still have a couple of your selfbows too! Been a long time since I've talked you. Nice to see you here...tippit
To bad,
Guess I'll have to try and talk John out of one of his wood bows that he still has on hand. HA-HA I'm sure there is no chance of that.
Dan
Great looking bow Doc!!
Thanks for posting those pics.
What a piece of work - I think I drooled on my keyboard.
Don't let that one get away!
