Title: Two classics still shooting
Post by: Blackhawk on March 29, 2010, 02:24:00 PM
A friend and I took the 4 hour drive east to  Richland, Washington this past weekend for the Colyak Archers annual 3-D shoot.  As we neared  the 40 yard caribou target, we recognized two classics in front of us with bows in hand and arrows in their quiver.

Gail Martin, now in his mid 80's, and Larry Hatfield, in his mid 70's, had smiles on their faces as they took their shots at the distant targets.

Here are two men who have played such a huge role in archery for the past 60 years still enjoying the sport.

Yes, it was great seeing two classics out playing with their bows and arrows.

I went to college in Walla Walla and did some work with Martin Archery on a design project when I was in engineering school.

I was in the company headquarters chatting with Gail when he very generously invited me to a 3D shoot in LaGrande. He paid my way and we spent a warm sunny day shooting and talking about archery and it's history.  Gail is a true old school gentleman.

I was really impressed with how humble and generous he was.  His knowledge and stories of archers and archery's past were enough to keep me entranced the entire time.

I always get a good feeling when I see someone that age still out shooting their bow, you know they truly love the sport. Just hope I will still be able to do it I'm fortunate enough to live that long.
