I was invited down to hunt with my bud, Cory Mattson for a few days. He said bring along John(I have no idea why) if you want. John was willing and ready , so we rolled out wed afternoon and headed south to the camp. Got in just in time for dinner, whipped up by cory's guest , Ken. He said he saw 18 pigs that afternoon, so we were pumped up and ready for the next day.

John, checking out the recurves. or maybe thinking about heading over the the out house.
We Jumped on the stealth and headed out to feed up a few places that I knew about. To say there was pig sign would be a gross understatement.

Thanks to my good buddy, Jet , for the use of his stealth and camper for the trip.
We came back and decided to rest a bit before heading out for the afternoon hunt.

After our nap we headed out. I got up a treestand and about 5:55 pm a real nice boar came in. the wind was real squirrly, so the first time he gave me a good look, I dropped the string and ventilated him. He tore out, with blood spraying out his side, and started that back and forth crashing in the palmettos, that we all like to hear. in 10seconds, all was quite. I sat about 15 min and got down and found this.

And then this.

I knew he was a decent pig but when I grab his back legs to drag him out, I knew he was a hoss. The pic really doesn't do him justice.

I ran into cory and we headed down the road to look for more pigs before dark. Cory told me he had also shot a 65lber and had it back to the road. He also shot it with a bow that I made and gave him last spring. we found John working up the road and it wasn't long before we heard pigs feeding. We put John on point and watched him sneak up to about 10 yards from a good size group of pigs. about a 10 lber came out and teased him for a bit, but the bigger ones would'nt offer a good shot. Finally , as anyone who hunts in the south knows, the wind swirled and the gig was up.
When we got back to camp after dark, Michael (sunnyhill archer) was there. His lease is right next door and he had ran down for a quick hunt before heading to PBS on friday. It was nice to finally meet him. We talked over our up comming St Judes turkey hunt and ate some great alligater stew that cory had cooked. Then it was over to the gambrel for the official weighin.
Michael said "163" Cory thought 176, john gave it around 185. My back said 350.

Largest hog i've taken so far.
Cory's pig with the bow I made him
(http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c222/526don/DSC00110.jpg)
Cory shot his with a 60lb longbow, 2036 shafts and simmons treeshark head. 30yd recovery and a big hole.
I used a 46lb addiction recurve, axis 500 shafts , abowyer brownbear head, My head never made it out the other side of the pig. It was through to offside shoulder, just did'nt have quite enough gas left to punch through the thick hide on the far side. The broadhead would still shave hair when I took it out of the hog.He made it 25 yards and died.
All in all a great hunt. Thanks to Cory for the invite and John for the company on the trip. thanks for looking. Don Batten

I think the reason our buddy John did not shoot the little pig was because he was afraid it would charge!Alright John, Im done agrivating now!See you soon.
Bill

By the look of that pic. the only 10 pounder John saw was in his dreams! LOL
Great job Don nice hog!! Thats what them bows were built for swamp mud and hog blood!
I'm convinced, Hoots. Sorry I didn't get to talk to you (up close and personal-like) at Sissipaha. I wanted to congratulate you on the Addiction bows success!
Great story, pics (except of John-boy sleeping ;) ), and great hunt, Don. Sorry John didn't get a chance to "ventilate" a hog too but I'm beginning to think he is like me and just doesn't like shootin' critters - ceptin' mebbe a tree rat now 'n agin. ( ) :goldtooth:

Great Hunt thank you for bringing me along.
Dons got a picture of the heart that will show what a single bevel can do! He'll post it later
Wow! that was fun. Thanks Don, looks like a great hunt and great photos to match. Next time leave John and take Bernie. :clapper: (Just kidding John.)
Don W.
I've heard Bernie is a genuine hog whisperer....I think he may of had better luck than me. I stuffed corn in my pockets and a 10 pound piglet showed up!(LOL)
Looks like you boys had fun! Thats a real nice hawg Don. John - That 10 lb'er would have made a nice sammich :) ....Thanks for sharing your hunt with us...
I used to hunt pigs around the Savanah River area (and up around Sumter) also, John (for 3 or 4 years or so). I had to stop (for personal reasons) just about the time I was switching to trad bows - so I never did get to try my hand with trad gear on them. There are a few stories about them on my web site and they are fun critters to hunt - but I don't remember any "whispering" - :biglaugh:

Good goin, great pics.good and good eatin
Is he a sleep or did he fall out of the treestand? nothing like carrying that camera with ya at all times, never know when yo will need it.
Oh sleeping all right!I put a stalk on him when I mistook his snoring for a rooting hog grunting. :biglaugh:

Looks to me like thet boy's snake-huntin', James - whether he wants to be or not! :scared:
That is a great pic on the heart shot, Don. Already most sliced up for cookin', ya might say
James, I use a similar strategy for deer hunting and squirrel hunting. If at first you don't find them then just stop at a nice spot and get comfortable. After a while the deer (or whatever) will become curious and come to see what's wrong.
Looks like your hunting partner may be more advanced in his approach.
John, if you could have caught that piglet, his momma might have given you a shot. :)
Great story. I really like the heart picture. Looks like it was a great time.
Don you are the man, John you showed great restraint I would have shot. Great pics and looks like a great time.LCH
Great job guys!
Don,John would have done better with a couple those pigglets squeelin in his pockets than that handfull of corn. :biglaugh:
Tommy told me the only reason he had to lay down was those darn shoes just wore him out. ;)
Man do I wish we had hog hunting close by here in Idaho!
You all are very fortunate to have such a good critter to chase with a bow! Someday I'm gonna have to save up and do a hog trip somewhere!
:bigsmyl:
Travis
Very cool
Nice hogs
First time I ever saw Tommy with shoes on. Whats the deal with that? I thought he was a bare foot man . DB
Don we hunted farther south the first part of the week.He walked the dikes barefooted and never blinked at snakes, gators or the sharp rocks the dikes were covered with.Got out of the truck at this place and saw a spider about big as a quarter and he come unwound. :bigsmyl:
That boy hates some spiders and I showed him one on the ground and told him there were a bunch around there. He pulled out the shoes. :biglaugh: First time I have seen him wear then too. :)
Great story and pics!! Stories like this inspire me to keep the wheels in the closet and keep trying with the 'curve.
