Title: Trad Archery Scene Around Philadelphia?
Post by: Pinecone on March 28, 2010, 02:06:00 PM
Howdy, fellow Trad Gangers!

I'm interested in knowing if anyone has information on the trad archery community/shooting/bowhunting scene around Philly.  Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Claudia

I am from Atlantic City area,If you go to the trad events( main Forum page) and the New Jersey thread at the very bottom of the main forum page you will find info on the Whittingham shoot( and others) at the end of April. And some guys in the Jersey thread may live close to Philly.

Traditional archery is getting very popular and there's getting to be a lot of Tradtional Only shoots in the Philadelphia suburbs. The Whitetail hunting is great with a very high deer population all around Philadelphia.

Claudia, there is good hunting in the suburbs around the city.  Trick is to get permission to hunt.  A friend of mine lives in the city and has had luck volunteering at some of the county parks and such.  Meets lots of people like that.  I've hunted with him some down there and the amount of deer (and the damage they can do) leave many people with no choice but to allow hunters.  I've heard from more than one property owner that they enjoyed watching the deer at first, but the honeymoon soon ended when their flowers/gardens were destroyed.  Good luck...Mike

I lived in the Phila. suburbs in the 80's/early 90's. There weren't many of us hunting with stickbows then, but the deer population was incredible then, and even more so now. Like mooseman76 said, the trick is getting permission, though I hear even the PETA types are getting sick of the deer damage and roadkills. As far as the trad scene goes, I don't know. I bugged out years ago. I do know Leon Stewart is about 30 miles west of Philly, and Dreamcatcher Traditional Archery is just north in Bucks Co. Great folks to deal with.

Go to Pa. Wilds Archery Festivals!!

Denton , Sawmill , Potter county probably a couple hour drive from Philly , Denton is the largest I am sure you have heard that before. If you make it to Denton look for a bald guy in a wheelchair and say hi.
