Title: need advice from members in Alaska
Post by: Ranger Rick on March 23, 2010, 01:52:00 PM
My  son has taken a job working at denali from mid May to mid Sept. He is hoping to get in some black bear hunting while he is there. I am looking for someone he can talk to and get some pointers and advice from. He is a college student and has a limited budget so he  cant afford a guide service. Is there any members out there that would be willing to take a little time and chat online with him and help out. As a dad I am a little nervous about sending my son out in grizzly country. I would appreciate any help.

thanks
Rick

Send him down here and we can run him across the bay to catch a black one, there's plenty of them. Not to many griz here, esp in the right places.

Rick,  dunno what happened to my first post, but,,,,,I live in Anchorage and can help if needed.
If he is working a summer program in Denali he is north of any good blackie hunting.  Too many grizz up there.  I also worked the park when I was in college as a shuttle bus driver.  Am very familiar with the area and also just across the Denali highway toward Paxson.  Don't worry about him hunting griz as he isn't able to being a non resident, would have to hire a guide.  They aren't that bad anyway hahaha.  Take Tom up on his offer to go across Katchemak bay for a shoreline Blackie.  He knows his stuff and there are lots of bears there.   I'd be glad to help anyway I can.    Duckbill@alaska.com

Looks like the regs are pretty liberal up there for bears.  I would think that hunting the streams would be a good place to start but maybe some others will chime in.

Dave
thanks for your reply and I really appreciate your taking time to help out. He has a lot of questions about transportation and lodging as well as best times to hunt. He is scheduled to start on may 14 but could possibly schedule an earlier arrival. I believe they fly him to anchorage. Would it be ok for josh to send you pm,s with questions. Thanks again for your help.

Rick
