Title: Rod Jenkins Texas school
Post by: flatsboat on March 22, 2010, 06:47:00 PM
Attended Rods shcool in weatherford 2 wks ago. Very well worth the money. I can honestly say some of the things we did paid off right away, great feeling to do it right and see positive results. Don't worry about gap shooting, nothing to do with it.

Bill,

Your right it's all about getting it together in your form.  Was the best two days of coaching I've ever had.

Did my fist hour of blind bale homework tonight, man I'm sore! Sure is a lot of things to think about during a shot. I'm keeping a daily journal to try and track progress and keep repeating the good things. It was fun to finally meet some of the folks on here and put a face with the names, and some dang good food too.

I'm glad I went the first weekend too. Mike, Connie and Jason were great hosts and put together a weekend of fun and learning with great facilities and delicious lunches. Rod is an excellent teacher who helped all of us learn more about what we were doing right and wrong. Everyone was quickly shooting better. It was a super experience in every respect, including all the people who were there and the beautiful weather we had.

Allen,

Yep the first weekend had the weather for sure.  But last weekend was like and elk camp adventure.  Had the stove going and tarps up.  Turned out fine I think.  Everyone learned a bunch and went home with homework.

LOL

I think I'm gonna have to drop down about 10# for the hour long homework, with my current weight 30 minutes is about the max before I start struggling and I feel the steps going away.

Brandon,

After a week with a lighter bow, we are back up too our normal bows and with the additional drawlength actually pulling heavier then before.

Rod knows how to shoot. If a person wants to be a better archer, he can help get you there.

Last Saturday was the first day of Spring, and as we left Rod's shooting class that afternoon here in North TX we had light snow with 40 mph wind!

Rod puts on a great class, go if you can. He will make you use back and shoulder muscles you haven't used since your 5th grade tree climbing days. And say adios to your old anchor point, with Rod's coaching you will find a new one a lot closer to your ear than the corner of your mouth. I had to be Rod's slowest learner, but he hung with me and kept telling me "John, I'm more stubborn than you are" until I finally got my elbow around to pointing away from the target instead of off to the side. He got a string hit nose bleed from showing me the right way so many times, but he didn't give up on me until I got it. After that, just when I wanted to sit back down because I was slowing up the class too much, he made me shoot four more times. When I did those four the way he wanted me to, my classmates all clapped, laughed, cheered ... I felt like I was crossing a marathon finish line. Thanks Rod.

And thanks to you too Mike. Jason's chili verde Saturday, and your jambalaya Sunday was just the lunch we needed on those days. You, Connie and Jason put a lot into hosting those classes, and we all sure appreciate it. Made some new friends, and enjoyed catching up with some friends I haven't seen in a while. I'd like to know some day if that pecan stick Rusty was carving ended up a chicken or a roadrunner. Rusty said as long as it didn't end up a bloody thumb he'd be happy.

For my classmate's amusement I'll note that yesterday evening while in my backyard working on the form I learned a day earlier in a 35 degree Texas norther, I was swatting mosquitoes. You had to have been there ...

Did Rod bring out the Formaster? That is one telling device! Sounds like you guys had fun. Rod did one for us Northwest guys in Oregon. Best thing I've done to improve my shooting.

David,

Yes, the Formaster was present and accounted for! It is a good learning device.

I love the formaster.  It is a lot better then the carbon arrow Wingnut has to hit me with to get my draw back.

Rod is a class act.  Good clinic.

I really enjoyed my time spent in Texas! In fact I'm excited about Dryad making this a annual event.

Meeting old friends from online forums and making new ones makes all the traveling a pleasure!......oh getting to hunt a little, isn't bad either  :)

So Rusty did that stick turn out to be a chicken or a roadrunner?
Thanks again to Wingnut, Connie and Jason for cooking, cleaning and hosting everyone. And thanks to Rod for the instructions and the patience.
I have to keep reminding myself "of course it feels wrong you been doin' it wrong your whole damn life"

I was fortunate to attend the Texas class two weeks ago (the Perfect weather one)and really enjoyed it and learned a lot.. Now I have a "shot sequence" and it truly is working for me. Never shot better, already, and the best part of it is that now, when I screw up, I immediately know what I did wrong and can work on it to fix it. Mike, Connie and Jason really did a fine job of hosting, really good food and very nice people. All in all the class, Rod, was a great experience and money well spent. I encourage anyone wanting to improve their shooting, to sign up. Mike is a great teacher and spends quality time with each shooter to help ingrain new habits to replace the old ones.. (hey Allan)

19 more days to go and then I get to start slinging some arrows... I for one can't wait to burn in the right form and shot release.  After that it is going to be all fine tuning and that is a good place to be.  At least that is my goal  :)

Rod was right, it's only been 3 days and I'm already sick of the blind bale. It's amazing that after only 3days/3hours that the changes seem to be becoming more automatic. 18 days sure is gonna be a long time!

You're getting me fired up fellas. My daughter and I will be attending Rod's April 10-11 clinic at Lancaster Archery Supply in PA. Any advice? I have too many bows and hopefully a new Dryad by then. Am I better off shooting a lighter bow?  Haven't been shooting much lately due to travel, winter and work. Hope I can last the weekend!

Take something you can draw and hold, over and over and over comfortably.

Steve,

Take the lightest bow you own.  If it is not light enough, I'm sure Rod will have a few with him.

BTW ask too shoot "Sweet Thing"

Mike

Post by: JEJ on March 25, 2010, 02:11:00 PM
To Mike's "take the lightest bow you own" I'll add "take the longest arrows you own" too. At the end of Rod's coaching you will have very little shaft/point sticking out in front of your shelf. And like that "We're going to need a bigger boat" line from Jaws, you'll likely be thinking "I'm going to need a bigger arrow."

Yep Mike, thanks to Sweet Thing's accommodating nature, my draw elbow finally pointed west, while my nose pointed east.

Hey Brandon, 17 more blind bale days until arrow flinging time!       :archer:

You can believe what what Rod says. As Rod and I sat and talked in the past, he had tried to tell me many times about back tension. It never sank in, I could not understand. We were never able to work one on one, just talk about it.
Well, this past fall we had a couple of days to hunt together and communicate some more, and I was recently able to watch the new video, Master of the Barebow III.
Well, I have never been a great shot, my release always caused me problems.
After watching the video and doing as Rod suggested, My release has improved.
I recently shot at the Georgia State event, I tied for 3rd in men's longbow. That is very good for me.
If you have the opportunity to attend one of his classes, I encourage you to do so, he can help you improve.
Thanks Rod!

I had to attend half the class on the " good weather" weekend and the other half on the take off a few jackets so you can shoot weekend. It was by far the best money I have ever spent. Iam getting alittle better every day, and feel more confident. If we can get enough people to request it we may be able to get wingnut to post the pic of him doing stick drawings of wildlife at the class- I think it was wildlife??? Anyway thanks Rod for the "hep" and let us know when you get back this way so we can all get together.

Yep the blind bale days are wearing thin.  I've had to amend mine as we are going pig hunting next week.  So we do our blind bale work and then tune broadheads.

Not working too bad.

No pics of the "goat" are allowed.  LOL

Dang you try to "hep" people understand the finer points of geometry and they can't see a goat in the pic.  LOL

Wingnut, at least you're about halfway through the 21 some of us still have over 2 weeks. Good luck on the hog hunt and make sure to get some pix, maybe they can be substituted for the stick/goat.

Just a note to make Rods head swell a little. I was there when he shot the hog ( bout a 200 plus boar). Only bows he had were those 40# clinic bows. He did have some good broads but 40#s, please. We dropped him off at the stand blessed him with well wishes and left. 40#s ------perfect shot burried in far shoulder. Lucky??????
