Jeff,
the one on the left was cut with my burner.I just got it a month ago and love it!! You just have to keep the blade clean.

aside from home made nichrome burners, the ubiquitous commercially available burner is the young and it's a great burner for sure. these dayze i prefer to chop, but here's my fave burned shape i created a few years back, a short hi-back 4" shield for 4-fletch ...

I won't do them any other way.
Well, I use snips now and then.

I've had a burner laying around for a couple years and just found the project for it. I wanted to make a couple bamboo arrows based on some antique Persian arrows I saw on the auction site two or three years ago. I couldn't do the fletch I wanted with any of my choppers and a pair of scissors wasn't going to make the grade. I'm happy with the first generation of these arrows and have learned a couple things to do differently next time.

Everything was painted by hand, including the rudimentary cresting, these shafts weren't straight enough for my crester no matter what I did.
The nocks are made of bone. I got a chew bone from PetSmart and started carving. Worked pretty good.

the burnt edge scrapes off easily with a knife blade.
Good tip ...Rob ..thanks
An emery board works well too.
Nice arrows folks. My homemade burner works great.
My Young burner just quit burning .....anyone got any ideas what to try ?
Another Young burner.
Do not try any Littlefeather/Van/TX plans for homemade equipment.
Those guys could burn down a fire hydrant.

We used fine sandpaper on the feathers to remove the burn from the edge. Just a very light sanding does the job.
a few shots and the burned black edge is gone
Joekeith, pry up the tabs on the bottom and lift the top off. You will probably need to tighten the connections at the element terminals. Look for other spots showing signs of overheating, loose connections, etc. The Young burner is a very simple piece of equipment.
Except for the all white "Bald Eagles", I'm pretty sure these are all burned.
