Title: Which KME?
Post by: Jeff Cooper on March 17, 2010, 12:47:00 AM
Which KME system do I need for 190 grain Grizzly El Grandes? The broadhead system or the knife sharpening system? Thanks, Jeff Cooper

You need the knife sharpener.

Hi Jeff,

The first thing you'll need is a good file. I like the knife sharpener myself for the El Grandes but, there's not a stone of any kind that is up to the task of setting the initial bevel on these heads. They need to be filed before using either sharpener. You don't have to get them sharp with the file, just close. Then the stones will finish them up nicely. I prefer the "standard" stones myself. Thanks,

Ron

Thanks Ron,

I've got a good 14" Nicholson file, but I want to make sure I am getting the coorect angle. So can I use the knife shapener with this file first, then progress to finer after that with the same setup? I am interested in getting something soon, so I can be ready for spring bear.

Jeff:
If your in a hurry, give Ron a call. He is great to work with and will not sell you a bill of goods. Believe he has a toll free number, but not positive. Good luck and "Keep'Um Sharp".

Jeff,

I have a file I bought for the first step. It looks like this )))))))))))) and cuts right through the Grizzly. I have an extra if you need it....

Jeff,

Sorry for the delay. I understand the new grizzlies have a much better factory grind. Are these the ones you have? Or are they the older ones? (you can tell by looking at them)... the new ones are laminated all the way to the back, and the older ones are only laminated about 2/3 of the length of the blade.

Either way, I'd file them first before using the sharpener and you'll need to do it free hand. I can't find a good file to work with the knife sharpener. Since time is short, give me a call tonight between 6-8 eastern if you can. or send me a PM with your phone # and a good time to call. Thanks,

Ron
