So I am coming to the states to do some visiting/hunting fishing with you guys and gals
I am traveling on my motorcycle so I have to pack lit
I have ordered a "cooler rack" for my hitch so I can put my bows and arrows on there in a pelican case to keep them secure.
So hunting gear guys...I know what to pack up here in the yukon when I go. We don't have to deal with many of the things that i will be exposed to down south in the summer.
Firstly we have about 22 hours of daylight and there are no poisonous things here accept the poli-TICKS.
I am initially coming down through Glacier National Park and into Montana then east to milwalkee then across the lake then on to Kitchener ontario. So I don't think I will have to buy anything special until my second half of the trip.
I will be heading south from Kitchener and i want to hit the Dragons tail road and then over to GA to see Terry G if the offer is still there.
Then it's down to milton florida for 5 days or so.
Then it's up to whim of the ppl....I am staying south along the coast to texas (then I can travel around texas and meet some of you and PLAY).
Then I am heading west to Juarez area and then again i am torn between going north to Denver area or west to california....
So thanks for all your help.
Jer Bear

Jerry, Do travel with cash or travelers checks?
Sounds like you have a good list there. I would add sunscreen to the list if your not used to the sun down here you might end up looking like a red lobster! And bring a camel back for water that is what I use on me motorcycle trips. You can fill it with ice water for free at gas stations and truck stops, you can wear it or strap it to your seat behind you. Get a list of truck stops, most of them have them to hand out free, they will list their locations. They have showers that you can use for a small fee of $5-$10 and they provide towels and soap. I also agree with the thermocell to repel bugs. By the way what type of Bike do you ride? I have a Harley and my wife rides a buell. Be carefull where you pitch your tent, down in the southern US they have fire ants. Have a great trip and kill a lot of critters, with your bow and not your bike! God bless.
I have a couple of Thermacells Jerry, you are welcome to pick one up on the way through Red Deer Alberta if you want. I will be chasing bears about that time, let me know and I can meet you when you come through. Right on Hiway 2.
Are you travelling inside the Mtns, Jasper, Lake louise, Fairmont? That would make the exchange a little more challenging, let me know. I could meet you on the Banff -Jasper.
Terry
A really good visor "clear"/cleaner.
And a bike lock probably isn't gonna cut it in Juarez...
Ride safe.
Joshua
Jerry
I live just off the Blue Ridge parkway in the Shenandoah PKY. You are welcome to stay here for a rest and some shooting on my place. I have ridden the dragons tail, and my ol' lady is a harley mechanic if you need some repairs. send me a PM if you plan to stop by
Mike
Definitely bring a camera(s) and camera accessories. Sounds like quite a trip you have planned. Will you be traveling alone?
A good torch and spare batteries, water purifier tabs, dunny roll, polarised 65% sunglasses but not the darker lenses, a couple pegs and 8mm rope x15-25', If u'r bike is dual off road some small chain extending from the forward section of the bash plate to base of the foot pegs reduses any brush and grass hindering the pedals, a broader foot on the stand. Have a couple of relays put in for a cigarette lighter socket for recharging phone or running a light and a switch to turn the lights off saves the battery in the bush when starting. Re adjust the rear suspension. Always assume people with 4 wheels have not seen u, yes! Even the ones whom u believe to have made eye contact with. We r often vitims of someone elses stupidity. Sorry! don't cut it on a bike.
Assuming it's a TD bow, towel wrapped in a snug PVC tube with screw on cap one end but long enough to accommodate a round 1-2" wide tin for bits and pieces, separate tube for the sticks, those extendable art cylinders are good and light for sticks. Keep it all away from the exhaust, a plate or secondary exhaust guard helps. Found the best place for the bow cylinder across the handle bar on a pair of bracket clamps. As ipcon2 said rescue remedy is a good idea and just a small vial. An axe can be heavy and unwieldy but a foldable tree saw will also do well, I have a Fiji bush knife, like a cane knife, less weight and really useful compared to anything an axe can be used for. Most joints can be cleanly worked with a good knife and patience, one with a drop point and another for that and camp work along with the letherman will suffice unless u staying awhile.
A good book, pages can be used when read at a sitting. Snack bars only for necessity. Rock salt and pepper in separate grinders, Himilayan rock salt has all the trace minerals when replenishing in the tropics. If the heats new to u might consider a course of Schucelers combination 12 cell tissue salts for the month before hand, they are small pillules that dissolve under the tongue. Eat good food on the trip down and a bit less as it's too easy to put on weight on a ride and u don't want too much excess in the tropics, no greasy. Camp in the shade. A folk and small tongs, plate and cup. And a small foldable chair, after a long ride and camping out lower back support is a must. U can get this when u arrive down there but as a good bushman once said to me "anyone can be uncomfortable". Mosi netting on the entrance of tent to sleep in. I have a rinsed out 5 lt degreaser bottle for keeping/collecting camp water, plastic light and disposable and drinkable. Drink a cup full when u wake up and make it habitual in the warmer climes. As mentioned zinc stick for nose and lips nothing else will work as well in the sun, sunblock #33 for arms, back of hands, neck and ears. The forarms, shoulders and head cop a hiding in the tropics and a brimmed straw hat can be crunched up, wetted if waiting anywhere for duration. A wet tee shirt when worn catches any air and has a cooling effect, when it dries wet it again if really uncomfortable. A good draw string bag with liner for rubbish hung off the ground. Always find a way to rinse u'r body clean at the end of the day, sleep clean e.g. when collecting water have a small hand towel and pour a container or two to rinse after a scrub down, this avoids any sweaty build-ups and rashes from chaffing etc., shampoo in a plastic bottle is more useful and better lather than soap, leaves no residue and can be used for dishes as well. All in all U should look like Mr Woos Chinese laundry riding down the road.
Dang Canucks and their axes, lol......
i would shed the sheep boots and get a good set of snake boots.
Ok thanks i will add these too my list.
I have a fold up wood saw and the axe and they stay in my bike ALWAYS.
I will add some of the other gems to the list....thanks keep it coming.
"dang canucks and their awes"...hmm well it's hard to hammer tent pegs in with a saw....it's very small and I used it once to kill a coyote in camp.
It was into the grub box and I thought i would just scare it away....I had the axe in one hand (we can't carry hand guns here LEGALLY...damm it) so I through a rock at it. He started growing and snarling and i back up to get the shot gun and he came at me.
I clubbed him right between the lookers when he got close enough and that was that.....pretty hard again with a saw.
Terry Brew - My bike is in Red deer and I will be going there first..oil change - tires (check them out - they should be good though). Have to mount the Cooler rack and some goodies on her.
Then load the gear and I am set.
PM me with your phone number and I will phone ok.

So there is a miriad of Camel back systems there.
I usually just use a waterbottle and my cup holder on my bike....is this for actual hunting.
Jer

Good Luck on your Adventure . Ride safe & God Bless. Randy
Hey Jerry, makes reservations for the ferry here in Milwaukee, it can be booked up, especially early on! Maybe we can meet up for a cold one before your boat ride across the lake!
check into some local librarys as you go and you should be able to get online for 10-15 minutes and report your progress to your trad "brethern"...they may mildly redirect you, depending on where your at, to something you may wish to see, or people you can visit with along the way. May come up with some pretty great places to stay along the way and perhaps some good shooting/fishing opportunities that you have to be a local to know about....hope this helps...john
I would not wear insulated boots. Unlined leather boots will be fine, snake boots would be better but not absolutely necessary. It is rare that I see a snake in the woods.
Thick leather gloves? A thin pair of leather or cotton palm/mesh back gloves would be better for hunting, especially the farther south you go, it's muggy here even when it's not hot.
If you come through North Alabama we could chase pigs or do some bowfishing, should be fun. Sounds like your putting together one heck of a trip, stop a library occassionally to keep us updated. Enjoy your trip and be careful.
Almost forgot, on the clothes I would stick with cotton tshirts and a thin pant, poly/cotton ripstop bdu style work best for me, unless your bulldozing through briars, the thinner the better...did I mention it's muggy even when it's not hot!
Hey Jerry, I know Terry beat me to it but I imagine you are coming almost right by my house. (if you are coming down Hwy. 43) You should stop for a quick coffee if you have time and I'm not working.
Jerry,Did you get some kind of cream(Utter Butter works) for your but,it sounds like it's gonna be sore from that ride...LOL Are you moteling it or all camping?
sheepshooter - I will be in edmonton on the 12-13 to help with the skills competiton there...
send me a pm and i will call you - thanks
str8jct - send me a pm and info and I will call on the way through thanks
joseph - bowhunting fool - pm sent.
This si going to be FUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
if anyone has some time and want to join in please let me know - I am traveling alone - if you want to ride a bike with me part way or meet to shoot the breeze.
I'm pretty easy, but not cheap :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
Jerry,
If you have the time....try and spend a day or so in the Black Hills area near Sturgis. The scenery and riding there are beyond belief... You may also find some prarie dogs and gophers in the area to hone your skills on. :wavey: :coffee:
When you hit Virginia, feel free to come on over. The southern part of the state is pretty nice!
lpcjon2 - My butt will be fine - I have done longer trips than this in less time. I do however want to enjoy this trip more than the previuos ones (most of them had real crazy timelines).
Lloyd - not going to have much time in Sturgis this time unless i make time on the road. I might shoot a bit as i hit rest stops though.
No trailer. All my gear fold up small and I have lots of trunk and saddle bag space. I have two waterproof bags too. but my reular clothes I just put in saddle bags...hunting and fishing gear in the waterproof bags..
All my flyfishing gear is 4 piece too so it goes into a very small aluminum case.
I will take pics of the loaded bike before I take off...I am sure I will have to pump up the air pressure in the tires and in the suspension though.
I travel with a waterproof bag that I strap in the passenger seat usually, but I got a cooler rack for my trailer ball and that will be mounted there...nothing in it is heavy either.
ALl the registration info etc is in the truck lid so it's always easy to get at.
I will stop and update as I go - I will be doing motels and camping depending on weather and need for a SHOWER...can get pretty ripe.
Spectre - pm me with your info and I can talk to you when I get close ok.
Thanks everyone for your kind words - wishes for a good ride and for your hospitality. I will be calling on you as I come through and even if we only get an hour it will be an hour I will cherish forever.
Again anyone wanting to see this crazy Canuck can just pm me and then I can start detailing the trip....that google maps thang is awesome.
Jer Bear
lpcjon2 - furthest I traveled in one go with no sleep was Whitehorse - grande Prairie - hinton - jasper - lake louise - golden - revelstoke - penticton.
total distance on google maps is
Driving directions to Penticton, BC, Canada
2,677 km – about 1 day 8 hours
took me 34 hours total - if I had a bigger fuel tank it would have taken less time....that was a long haul for one leg - the next day I went south and then south east and ended up in calgary.
google map that one and this is what you get.
Driving directions to Calgary, AB, Canada
3,585 km – about 1 day 18 hours - did that in 3 days total.
but again i didn't get to do anything accept see my mom.

I see you are going through my old stomping grounds. About 107 miles east of Great Falls Montana is a little town of 7000 people named Lewistown. I was born and raised in Lewistown and spent pretty much my whole life there until I took on this adventure in Alaska two years ago. I hope you go through there Its a great drive. Just be careful and watch for deer. You will see massive amounts of them in certain places.
Ride safe
Olin
