Post by: leatherneck on March 13, 2010, 08:40:00 AM
Just got done applying for my maine,Vermont, and NH moose lotterys. Hopefully this year will be the one. Have had several gangers offer to take this newbie moose hunter out if I get drawn. So if you plan on applying, they are accepting!! Good luck all.

I just applied for a Moose tag in New Brunswick Canada. Didn't draw last year, maybe this year. I like the odds...

I don't know about you guys....but until the drawings happen and I know one way or the other......moose is about all I can think about!  I'm always reluctant to actually PLAN anything else (just in case)!  Of course, reality sets in around late May to mid June and then I have to start thinking about Plan B (what I'm really going to do in the fall)!!!!

The way I look at it, ya gotta dream and think positive!

Good luck everyone.

1 Chance:  $15
3 Chances: $25
6 Chances: $35
10 Chances: $55

As a non-resident, you can also buy as many multiples of the 10 Chance packets as you like (or can afford).  Example:  3 x 10 Chances (30)= $165.  In addition, each year you apply and don't get drawn, you get a preference point, which is essentially an extra "chance" for each PP.

I guess I dont really plan for it. If I happen to get drawn then it looks like I get an extra trip that year. Now explaining that to the boss(wife) that could be a problem.   :biglaugh:
Nah,really, she understands this is a crap shoot and if it happens, it happens. I'll just have to do some side jobs to pay for it.

Preference points mean little in the Maine moose drawing since you can buy as many chances as you want.  This is grossly unfair to guys like me who apply year after year.  Obviously Maine cares more about maximizing the money they take in for the moose lottery than in having a fair system where those who have been applying the longest keep increasing their odds until they eventually draw.

If you guys are seriously iterested in drawing for Moose, I would look at Idaho.

I've done the ID lottery before when I lived in CO.  It wasn't cheap then.  It REALLY isn't cheap now!!!  :scared:

Let's start with the 2010 Moose application fee:  $2101.75
Then, you have to purchase a non-refundable NR hunting license ($154.75) just to apply.  I didn't mention that an archery permit costs an additional $20.

We are talking $2276.50 just to apply for a moose permit.  Granted, if you don't get drawn in early June, you get a refund (minus the $14.75 application fee and your $174.75 for your hunting license and archery permit).  This is the exact reason that I stopped applying for sheep out west.....way too much initial cash outlay for a NR.

Now I will give credit where credit is due.......Idaho has what is probably some of the best odds for drawing....perhaps 1 in 10 for NR.  In some years, a single NR has applied in a particular zone and drawn.  Pretty good odds. One would need to be a lot more familiar with the areas than I am to make a educated decision as to where to actually apply.  Also, no preference points. Evens the odds! The best thing they have going is the success rate......which is usually high most years.

While I will agree that it is, by far, the best of the west as far as Shiras are concerned, I still get the shivers on that initial outlay.

Maybe one year I'll get over the sticker shock and give it a try.  I just have to be willing to give up a couple of grand for a few months.
