Title: Bullheads. Who's using them?
Post by: BRONZ on March 11, 2010, 11:15:00 PM
I kept a couple in my quiver last spring, but didn't get a chance to use one.  I was wondering if anybody had some success with them?  How was the performance?

Got a turkey with one last year. It was definitely dead. I have three and all have bent blades and a some have minor damage to the head itself from the blades being pushed back when impacting ground. They were all damaged with just "normal" shooting so if you hit turkey head or neck they do it but I had to work on 'em after a few misses. For my hunting location which was near other houses where I didn't want wounded turkeys going it was a good choice and I will use 'em again. I think Magnus will actually replace damaged heads (not blades) but I haven't checked yet.

Oregon, didn't your pack of Bullheads contain a set of replacement blades. I have the 125 grain Bullheads and a replacement pack came with the heads. This will be my first year to use them.

skipmaster1 (Greg Krouse) was telling me at the bunny hunt this year that he hit 2 birds last year in the neck with the bullheads and they just took off.. seems as though maybe trad equip. doesnt generate enough speed to do whats intended... (just a guess)
i know for a fact gregs setup puts ALOT of deer in the freezer every year, so thats not the issue..
he said he switched to a snuffer and got 3 birds that season...
so, as much as i want to try them.... im gonna stick with a big 3 blade..

gaff

I may give them a try this spring.  I heard it is critical to use the appropriate blade orientation for your fletch (LW or RW).  I will be hunting Nebraska and Texas this spring so I should even get an opportunity to get some shots.  The birds are few and far between in my neck of the woods.

yeah it had the replacements and I have used them too.
I had no troubles with the trad equipment. When I finally made a good shot it 'bout took the turkey's head off.

Actually there was a post on archerytalk from Mike from Magnus. He said the blades are gauranteed just like the ferul. It was a mistake on the package. I talked to him a few days ago and he told me to send my blades back and he would ship out new ones that very same day.

I have not had the chance to try them on a bird yet. I did do some practice shooting and have had no problem with blades or head breaking. I shot inot an old pillow and tore up a pop bottle on a dirt bank.

I wouldn't doubt that Mike would exchange the blades.  Magnus has great customer service and stand behind their products.  I've sent off a few Snuffer SS and have had new heads at my door in 7 days.

Thanks for the info fellas.  I do recognize their limitations with shots that aren't up close and personal given my 46# setup-- I will have a fixed blade on deck.  Also, practicing by shooting them into a pillow is a great idea!

Keep the replies com'n.

I hit 2 birds 2 days in a row with them last season. both shots were with a 49# longbow and both were under 10yds with a buddy watching and filming. Both shots hit center of the outstretched neck dead center. Both birds stumbled but then just alarm putted and hung around. I'm sure they work great and if my shot had been a bit to either side on either bird I'm sure it would have killed them. I do know that I had to pass up many great shots waiting for a good neck shot. i also know that if I had any normal fixed blade head on, the birds would have been killed and i had no issues on the next 3 toms with snuffers.
Just my experience
