Post by: hunterjt on March 10, 2010, 07:33:00 AM
I shoot a bw sag recurve and love it. I would like to find a backup  T/D L/B or recurve for traveling but here's the deal, I shot my buddy's zona and i couldn't hit anything with It.     :help:

There is nothing like hands on shooting. Maybe if you think you would like a bow you could ask the seller for a short time period to examine and shoot the bow and if not satisfied to return it.
But that is probably why so many bows are in hands for a short time and then for sale again.Go to some of the big shoots and shoot all you can get your hands on. The riser is the key for me.

Two different bows will likely feel different to you. If it is enough to cause shooting issues, than you may have to decide which is better for you. "Mostly", if you are using the same form and the bow doesn't shoot where you are looking, than the arrows aren't properly tuned for that bow or you have gotten used to shooting improperly tuned arrows out of the original bow. I'm shure this is not always the case, but it happens frequently. Also, the sub concious is very powerfull and if it doesn't like something than there will be more issues.
The best way of choosing if you can't lay your hands on it, is to find something that resembles what you shoot well and try it.
A lot of people are too quick to give up on a new bow. If you give it 3 + weeks of resonable shooting time, It may fit as well or better, but if you constantly compare it back and forth ie. 10 arrows from this one and then 10 arrows from that one you will likely never get used to the new one.
JMHO-- I'm shure plenty will find fault with this.

After buying more bows than I can remember, I will never buy another bow until I shoot a representative sample first. There have been way too many bows that folks told me were better than sliced bread and turned out that I hated them and wouldn't give you a 1/10th what they (or I) paid for them. Shoot first, then buy.

As Tom suggested, I would highly recommend going to a big 3d shoot or gathering and kindly ask the owner of any bow that catches your fancy to let you sling a couple. Most are happy to share their favorite bow with someone who expresses interest.

My arrows are flying good out of the bow I shoot now. I don't have to fight to shoot it and others have picked it up and shot well with it. I will keep all in mind. I would just like to have a differnt bow for what ever reason.LOL

If the arrows are not correctly spined, it is difficult to hit the target. Every bow is different, bows of the same poundage may require different spine shafts.

Hunterjt,

I think bigjim has a very good point. And arrow spine does play a big part. and as tom said I'd shoot every thing I could at the 3D get togethers.

3 years ago I bought a bow that I hadn't shot before. when it arrived I started shooting it and couldn't hit where I was looking, like I could with my old bow. The feel and fit of the new bow just wasn't "right". I talked to a friend of mine and he told me the bow maker would take the bow back if it wasn't right.(he knew the bow maker personally) But he also told me to be fair to the bow maker that I should shoot it for a couple of weeks exclusivly before sending it back.

To make it short from here I still have the bow and it shoots great. I needed the time shooting it to get used to the different grip and to have my mind cleared of the, "it isn't the same", mantality.

Good Luck

I'm with JC on this one - must shoot before buy.

Why not buy another Widow same specs. All my bows are exact same make/model/specs - with assortment of limbs. This way they all feel/shoot same.

I'll get blasted on this one, but. Most folks that have many many bows always say the same thing. "I'm bringing this one it shoots the best". My point is that most folks brains cannot compute all these bows and each ones trajectory and allow for good shooting with five bows over a week. On top of this, each bow is physically different - grip etc there is no way that anyone can shoot five different bows all with same acuracy as their GO TO BOW. So, for best results find your GO TO BOW and get another the same. Consider it insurance, what if they ever discontinue your GO TO MODEL???

I agree. You really need to spend some time with a bow. This happens to me as well when I demo new skis. The design has usually changed a bit and often the materials but my concentration and form inherently improve as well with the excitement of the new equipment. In sum: they don't start out as fair comparisons! Just to make it more confusing.     I'd prefer to spend a day or more stumping to really get comfortable with a bow and make a fair judgment.

I'm with hunt it: In fact in keeping with the same ski analogy, my friend bought up 3 pairs of the non-shaped skis when ski designs radically changed: "It took me long enough to learn to ski well with the old style. I'm not learning a new one!"   :biglaugh:

Need to shoot before you buy for sure and arrows also play a big part why not find a backup widow.  I have not found any grips to similar to the widows but there are some that definantly feel better imo.

I am the opposite of "must shoot before buy" simply because I can't, here. So, I research, and research, and research. Also, I believe that I can shoot any bow (except for really short ones).

Every bow need time to create the feeling and find the right arrow, just few days sometimesa re not enough. For me the best way is to buy a bow of the same maker of the one you like most with close or same specs, with a different wood combination.I get 8 Robertson I love them and they shoot pretty similar.
