NOTE : If any of you guys driving to Bear Quest are bringing a covered dish, wild game etc, please let me know.
Thanks
Tom, If I can get out on the boat and get some dolphin before I leave on the trip I'll bring some mahi-mahi fillets. I was also thinking about bringing my dutch oven and making and apple cobbler...what ya think? George
I was going to drive but I don't think my wild game coverd dish would last.See ya real soon bd
I will be driving, its gonna be a long haul though so probably no covered dish, I am kind of short on wild game but do have a freezer full of hamburger and would be glad to bring a few pounds. Or could turn it into chili, freeze it and pack into a cooler to be heated at camp. whatever ya'll (thats right ya'll) think.
Bowdoc- answer your phone :knothead:
bowdoc, were you gonna bring that road kill cassarole again? :clapper:
Hey, I'll make you a deal. This year I'll buy you a T-shirt. I'm sure you've outgrown the one you got last year! :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
LD
Hillhunter,
Perfect if you make chili & freeze it that will work perfect.Just confirm that you will be bringing it so I can fit it in and get some cornbread or sourdough.
Thanks
I will bring it.
Tom.....I will bring the same thing I brought last year. As I remember there were only a couple guys that liked it but it is all I know how to make. : :p

Tom bring the corn bread and I'll just bring some big bowls...Hey Larry I washed that shirt when I got home last year and you otta see it now.
Oh yeah Bill you go ahead and bring your dish along I'll help get rid of them anytime bro.
GY I never got home until late both nights.I'll be in my shop around 7-ish AM bd
Tom is it possible to hunt with a ThomasHawk? I'm going back and forth between a stone or a chunk of iron.
WapitiMike,
I think the SELFish bow that was made for you is what you should have in your hand for Bears this Spring !!! In the words of Clint " You Feel Lucky ? Well Do Ya Punk" !!!!
Bill K. -- Looking forward to the Ribs.
HillHunter --- Got you marked down for Chili.
Thanks Guys.
Bill K. What week are you going? If its not the same week as me I might change weeks just to get a taste of those ribs again!!!
OH no don't bother changing Jon I'll save you some ribs...NOT bd
Tom, Me and Brandan will be bringing a couple frozen dishes as well. I'm not sure what yet, but count us in.
Mike
Tommy, count on a casserole of pigeons(hamburger filled cabbage) for week two.
Shick
Geez guys sounds great all the goodies.Maybe I do not need to HIRE Bowdoc for Cook !!!!! Although the outfit I have for Cook this year would look best on the Little West Coast man.
Bowdoc old boy I new I could count on ya.
Tommy, I was thinking Donovon,Mike and myself will bring a couple nice big bone-in Ham's for dinner for one of the nights. Will that be OK? Not sure if you have the dinners for the first week all planned out or not yet.
Thanks,
Jon
Im not very good at cooking, but Momma Brill is good at baking and she offered to make cookies for the trip.
Tom, packet came in the mail. How many are we talking about feeding in week two? That'll give me a better idea of what and how much chow to bring on the 14 hour drive to feed the hungry hunters for a meal.
yeah TP I can see that happening...
I been pileing up rodents (Coons, Possums, Skunks, etc)sliceing them up and maken jerky as Hard Tack. Something to chew on while waiting.
In Africa they called it BilTong. I called it dried rotted meat. At least mines not rotten just dry.
Wapiti-Mike,
Your Jerky sounds good. You gonna also supply the dental floss sticks & mouthwash ?
Tom, is it true? Marty McMahon is coming this year?
Yes Sir,
The Famous Floridian Bowhunter will be in BQ camp !! Anything I should know about Marty ?
Yeah....take a lot of extra flashlight batteries. You guys are gonna be out late every night!
Why alot of batteries ? Doe's he wander from stand alot and not have a good sense of direction or will we have to look for arrows that are MIA ? Or does he like tracking ???
You ever seen him shoot? Obviously not 8-)
Tracking lights buddy, tracking lights.........
Tom, can't wait til june, already getting stuff ready. On the ropes about what to bring covered dish wise but i will let you know in due time.I'm Working on a great new turkey call to bring for the trade blanket if we have one, hope there's some turkey hunters up there that will put it to good use. Can't wait to meet everybody in camp.
Chad Tomlin
Chad,
The Wild Turkey you mentioned will be fine if you still want to bring it.I will have spices etc. and will get Bowdoc to cook it for us.
YES on the Trade-Blanket,looking forward to seeing the turkey call.
Tom
Is there a sweat lodge up there to rid us of evil spirits?
Bowdoc will take care of the evil spirits for you.
Maddog- You can boil up those lobsters you promised, while ridding yourself of those evil spirits...
Nate is right on, I am sure bowdoc will be willing to help!!
A large jar of pickled eggs and a case of cheap beer then we enter the hut. That's as close to red crab as it gets!
Has everyone recieved their "List" for hunt ?
oh yeah I can smell this one brewing already its gonna get soooooooooo good it won't be long now lady's not long at all.
Tom you gotta get me the huge 3-4 bunner propane stove with the grill(like mine) so we can use it outside not like Lloyd's grill but a flat pancake type grill..you can take the cost of one out of my pay.
Hey one other thing guy's Tom always forgets to mention to you,you should start practicing right now from oh lets just say 12-15 foot shots from like 4 feet off the ground bd
Bowdoc,
I am working on a good outside grill to your liking.
atta boy if its new you may want to heat it up to around 400 degrees then wipe it down with peanut oil and let it cool repete as many time as possible see ya soon bd
Do you guys have to post every day driving me crazy. :bigsmyl: Have a great time and I will be there in spirit. For the first timers it will be the most relaxing, fun, exciting, smelly week you have had in a long time.Good luck the food and prepration will be great also.Tom taking my bride to New York and Boston early June this year so making points for 2011 keep me a hole open next year.Kip
Kip,
Good Boy gotta keep your Sweetheart happy you will have fun in NY & Boston.Oh Yeah there is spot for you my friend BQ5 2011'.
Dang Kip, You comin' to Boston & I'll be in Bear Camp? When will you be in Boston? Doc
Talked to Tom today. I'll be in week two. Signed up back in July after reading the long string of posts about how much fun everyone had. Can't wait to get there and met some quality Tradgangers. Bringing a bear home is secondary to meeting a great bunch of guy's and making some new Trad friends.

oh dang I'll miss you so much Kipling you'll be in bean town and I'll be in Que'bec thats OK we got next year to hunt together and besides spending time with your bride is far more importent then shooting some stinky old bear bd
Tom,Doc and bowdoc gonna miss all of you but my love of 38 years won out this year.I will be in N.Y and Boston from the 12th/19th with Boston on tail end.Tom not sure how far either place is from Peru but if Paula is close by I would love for her to enjoy an evening meal with my wife and I, if doable for her.Take care Kip
Hey Kip,If you've time on your trip to Beantown the wife and I would be honored to have you and your bride over for dinner. Paul
Good morning Paul.I would really enjoy seeing you again.I will P.M. you so I don't hijack Toms thread any more.Kip
Monday I went and got all my necessarys together for my Passport. Next I went to the Court House and paid the funds and they said it would take 4-6 weeks!! So I am good to go! But dang, all this to cross the Canadian Border?? LOL!!
Cannot wait to meet you guys in person!!!
:bigsmyl:
Bonecracker,
Goods News your Passport is on its way.
What bows are you guys planning on using to anchor your Bears ???
I will probably bring my old faithful BW MAIII and a Jordon Stalker as a back up.
I shoot a Robertson Tom. I dont know if its on the list, but Ive been advised to bring earplugs. Wapiti saws some serious wood!!!!
I did list Earplugs on List !!! I really look forward to seeing all the different Bow,Arrow & Broadhead setups in camp.
EARPLUGS EARPLUGS EARPLUGS EARPLUGS EARPLUGS
-------------------------------------------------
What List???????
I'll be bringing my Bear 3 piece t/d this year and most likly shipping it to your place ahead of time. After paying 50.00 each way last year(extra bag fee) to bring a 1 piece bow that won't be happening this year bd
Bowdoc,
I thought I had you talked into bringing the YEW Horn Nocked longbow your son Troy made !!!!
Are YEW Man enough ??
Not sure on the bow yet, but it'll either be a shrew classic hunter, blackwidow, or a new tall tines if it get here in time. Tom what arrow weight, bh do you recommend?
? now if I bring a bow that is lets say 70" long not only does it cost me an extra 100 bucks but the bottom limb keeps hitting the ground when I let the string go ??? weird huh ? I know bd
George,
Whatever arrow broadhead combo you choose should be fine just be sure: PERFECT arrow flight right out of your bow (shots are UNDER 10 yards for the most part) also SHARP broadhead.
Thanks Tom. What time do you typically head out to camp? I'm thinking of driving up and spending a layover in Jersey to visit my 102 year old grandmother before meeting up with the group.
I'd purchase a copy Bill's video and check it out. That gives you some idea of shot distance and height of stands views of bears bd
Don't want to interupt the thread, but how many days is the hunt as i am planning for 2011. thanks
George,
So you are thinking of driving up ? If you are at my house by say 5 PM that would be fine.
10 Bonny Lane
Peru,Ma 01235
Tom, Sounds good.
First I was thinking of driving to save money then I was going to hitch hike and save even more money but remember what I told you about the last time I hitch hiked do to California ? holy smokes dude that was not pretty at all.I think I'll just stick with the good old airlines bd
I'm thinkin' I'll shoot the Morrison Cheyenne this year. 57# @ 28. 630 gr. AD Trad's with a Zwickey 4blade Delta. Ought to do the trick!
LD
Even though I gotta miss BQ IV, I got drawn for a spring bear permit here in Washington, in the unit I live in, so I getta hunt bear anyhow....
Mike good luck I never got my permit mailed in on time.Maybe next year you can join us in Que'bec bd
Mike,
That is cool you drew a Bear permit near home there, looking forward to story on it !!
T.P: I am having some email/computer problems at home. Are you getting the emails I've sent you the last couple weeks? No problems but I haven't heard back from you. Wasn't sure if they were going through or not. I'll try you again tomorrow. Uncle Barry p.s. Everything is fine and I'm still planning to be on the hunt. Thanks.
so UB your gonna enjoy with us again huh ? thats pretty cool my brother I'll see ya real soon.
Tommyboy how's about that grill whats shaken son ??? bd
Morning Tom,
As for my bow on the trip, I will be using a A&H ACS longbow 53 @ 28 64" long. I draw over 29 so who the heck knows what weight I am pulling! I am also going to be shooting Beaman MFX 400 Classics with something very very sharp on the end! Not sure what broadhead I will use but it will be big due to up close and personal shots!

Tom, bear taking bow is undecided as of yet, but it's been narrowed down to Jim Neeves and John McCullough crossing the border north
Bonecracker, my favorite PBS hat.
Shick
Thanks Shick!
I am amazed I still have that old thing! Found it hanging on a hat rack under a bunch of other old hats! It is now begging to be taken accross the border if you know what I mean! :)
How many of you attending BQ4 are PBS members ?
Just wondering ?
Bone'; I'll dust mine off and have it head north come June. Tommy, PBS'er right here!!
Shick
Denny I know you are PBS to the bone !! Who else ?
I am a PBS'R Diablo.

I'd rank you both "Executive President" and "Hall of Famer" of that society BD!" :biglaugh:
I figured that one would be coming Steve bd
PBS Associate...Doc
Me also!
For some reason I seem to make different rules or challenges for myself on this hunt. This years Quebec Quest will be have a new goal for me. I've been very lucky/blessed in the past to have taken I think eight bears by different means...selfbows(my own and a beauty by Eric), stone points by Woody, my own forged Team Tippit points, Little Delta Bow, etc. Plus last years Mr Big of over 300 pounds.
Bear Quest IV, I have an old promise to hopefully fulfill. I'll be shooting one of a couple of Mike Churney's exquisite Osage selfbows. This story goes back a bit so bear(pun intended)with me.
I first met Mike at Denton Hill on the swap blanket gathering. If you've never been to Denton, at the end of the day anyone can take anything archery related to the main lodge, display your goods on a blanket, and swap/haggle/buy from your traditional brothers & sisters. I don't think there was ever a bow made that at one time or another wasn't on a blanket at Denton!
Anyone who knows me, knows I love bows---collector bows, longbows, recurves, selfbows...the stranger the better. Plus the fun of it is to haggle over asking price or trade. About eight years ago I met Mike sitting on his blanket with a couple of really nice selfbows. It was a hot evening so I sat down with him admiring his bows and just started talking about bowhunting, how he made his bows, what was he asking, etc. I really wasn't intending on buying one just being friendly. Finally he said he hoped he could continue to bowhunt and make bows as he was just diagnosed with a brain tumor and he didn't have any health insurance!
Well my best friend's wife is a brain tumor survivor and I knew of the long road ahead for Mike. She was luckier in that her medical bills were totally cover as she had been Secretary of Housing for the Sate of Massachusetts under three governors. She was also a Chair person for the Brain Tumor Society. I said I try to get her to help and then I purchased a bow. I still Haggled over the Price of the bow although there was now a different twist...saying it was way too cheap and added an extra $100. I'd never been in a situation like Mike's and thought a little extra money would help if for no other reason than to have a bit of fun.
Every Denton after that I looked for Mike to see how he was doing. We sit and chat. I'd ask the price of his latest bow and Haggle some more about how he needed to up his price. I bought RH or LH...anything he had. One year Mike wasn't there...he had lost his battle.
I knew very little about him except for the time we shared on his blanket. We never hunted together but he was definitely a Brother of the Bow to me. I also said I'd try to fill my tag someday with his bow.
That time has come...Two of Mike's bows, Benjy's hand made Tonkin cane arrows that he just made for me, couple tippit knives...plus I'll tip the arrows with a new design Team Tippit broadhead. Hope I'm up to the task cause this one is in honor of Mike...Doc

Doc,
That is a touching story, really cool you will be hunting with Mike's bow as well as arrows from Benjy.
PBS member here; irregular for life. Grant
Jeff, you old scalawag, you ain't nearly as honery as you try to act! The facade is gone forever! That is one of the best stories I have read on Trad Gang. Actually, we all know how good and giving you are and this just reinforces it. I can not wait to see the bow and arrows at Bear Quest IV.
Tippit, you have all my respect,I am humbled to be in these site with people like you.
I didn't do anything special...just tried to listen and help a little. Everyone has their own St Jude's Moments...good and bad pending which end your on.
Jeff, I am humbled by your generosity! I knew 5 seconds after you pulled up in my driveway that I had a new friend. Now we just have to get you a gator quiver to carry all that cool stuff in! I enjoyed making those canes for you and I am honered that you plan on using your canes with one of Mikes bows! WOW
:notworthy:
Benjy
That looks like some good bear medicine Jeff.
Jeff, what goes around comes around and you being very lucky/blessed has a much more profound meaning
OUTSTANDING Doc looking forward to seeing your set up bd
Thanks Doc for the heart/felt story! When your days are too short, chances are you are living at your best!
Very touching story, I was beside my wife for the same battle with no insurance, but by the grace of GOD she came out of it (10 years now) so when I hear of someone else who has faced that battle it hits home. best of luck and I agree "good medicine on that bow"
Having known you for a while now Doc, I can say you are special! You seem to always offer up a generous spirit whether you like someone or don't even know them. (I didn't know you very well at all when you spontaneously offered to fix my bow limb tip for example). The Bible says that even thieves help those they care about but it IS a rare person who will help those "Samaritans" they don't know. Salute!
I'll second that one Steve.
Jeff,
Great story! What more can be said than that already mentioned above about you. I'm honored to know such a man that his wife calls husband, his children call father, some call doctor, and many that are able to call "brother"!
Thank you and good luck!!!
:notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
I have been away from the computer for a couple of days working.
First story I read this Easter morning (As my kids battle dangerous game on the wii that the easter bunny brought) is Doc's. Could not have been a better thread on this special day.

No Passport for me yet but it is on its way! :bigsmyl:
I am hunting the first week and will be driving up. Will meet Tom and the crew at LaTuque on Saturday morn. I would be interested in having someone ride along and share gas expenses. I could pick anyone up along the way or if you live west of me, we could meet at my house.
I do have my passport.
I GOT MY PASSPORT LAST WEEK, WHAT A MUG SHOT. CANT WAIT TO GET THERE, ME AND ZACK ARE PLANNING ON BRINGING OUR FISHING RODS BUT NO WALLEYES WHERE WERE FROM WHAT KIND OF TACKLE DO WE NEED.
CHAD
Chad you'll only need a few different colored jig heads and we'll buy some bait at the camp.We had a huge tackle box full of walleye gear but some dumb azz shot a rubber blunt thru the darn box and we lost all the tackle....bd
Passport will work fine and I am sure all you guys have valid drivers license, although the Passport worked fine last year.
Bill K, I am waiting to hear from Gatekeeper on wether he is flying into camp or not,if not maybe he will want to ride with you will depend on timeframe of vacation he has I would imagine.
Bowdoc,
Do you know something I do not know,What NEW grill & deep fryer ????? Your the cook ?

Bowdoc,
I am working on a large grill for outside better for when all the smoke from dinners engulfs the cabin !! Although the guys last year liked when the smoke alarms went off they knew dinner was ready !!!
Wow your not going to believe this but I thought the smoke alarm was a dinner bell. You know how it would go off just as the food was done cooking.See ya real soon bd
Just a question from a newbee after following this post I was wondering who brings the rolaids?? and do they sell them by the bucket?? :D
oh no we don't need any rollie with the masterful meals we cook over the 5 gallon plastic buckets.bd
Bowdoc is a dietician and serves nothing but nutritious meals. You don't gain any fat, just muscle. After last year I came home and ordered a new bow 87#@29 just to hunt squirrels with.
Bowdoc,
I am not being funny here, how about when we go grocery shopping for BQ 4 we buy some SPAM to have with eggs one morning ? I have not had in years.I am serious !!!
Tom your brining back some Monty Pyton memories...spam spam spam
I hate spam! Yuck! If we have a vote , I vote for fried taters, eggs, and biscuits and gravy for breakfast! No spam!
SPAM is the king of camp foods. I'll 2nd that vote. Good and good for you!! / :)
No one will be pressured into eating SPAM :-) Bisquits & Gravy sound good to Bill.
Tom, can you send me the address or phone number to the hotel on the boarder.
Thanks, Chad Tomlin
spam are you kidding I eat that stuff everyday and sometimes 3 times a day I love spam.Spam the ultiment snack food.It takes a master chef with years and years of camp cooking under his or in Tom's case her belt to prepare spam just right. How could pig levers snots and 50 pounds of salt not be good tasting and good for you yum yum can't hardly wait to make big Bill some sushi spam oh yeah Bill good served hot or cold...bd
The way you cook Bowdoc, you could make spam taste like filet mignon......(unabashed brown nose of the camp cook.)
I'm still having some computer problems since my recent hacker. They have me living in Cambodia (which is obviously a lie since they don't have whitetails in Cambodia). Anyway, just wanted to mention Mike Mitten and I did the Wisc. Deer Classic last weekend. We got a case of great bear scents (from Bill Wiesner's company) in a variety of flavors. It will make many gallons of scent to help draw them in from miles around to everyone's stands. Some of the flavors include bacon, caramel apple, jelly donut, strawberry, raspberry, cherry, etc. So maybe Bowdoc can use the syrups if the Spam cookout doesn't work for everyone. UB
Deep Fried Caramel Apple Spam! Are you kidding, That's gotta be a hand out at Heavens Gate!!
oh yeah boy's you know bd will keep us all full.Stawberry jelly spam with bacon flavor on the side...all I can say Uncle Barry is hell yeah we gonna eat good...Hey Tom don't forget the cookies and I don't mean the one's for the bears eather bd
Sorry guys, NO SPAM for me! My father used to make me eat that stuff and I swore when I got older I would not eat it ever again!!
BowDoc can have my spam!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
On the other hand I could use my SPAM as bait!!
you guy's never had raw spam sushi ?????? holy smokes now thats a trip bd
Spam beats the heck out of nothin', but not much else! :clapper:
LD
Did 1st bit of grocery shopping today for Bear Hunters, picked up som non-perishables !!
Have any of you guys ever had Egg,Cheese & Spam breakfast sandwiches ?????
Spam is sort of a salty bologna steak.
Love steak!!
Those closest to me will confirm that I'll eat anything...
Bring it on O'l Boy.
Im going to have to confirm with my nutritionist if its ok that I eat that, lol.
See guys, I told you there was nothing of good nutritional value in SPAM!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone have a Laptop they could bring to Bear Quest ?
Just checking to see if everyone going on BQ has read & reread their list of things to bring ? For starters ORANGE VEST,BOW CASE & PASSPORT.

wow now thats interesting I never thought of that bd
Tom, All set just waiting patiently for the middle of June...OK, maybe not so patiently!
No trail Camera, though. Either ruins the surprise or Ticks me off knowing what's there when I'm not!
LD
LD,
Glad you are getting antsy to travel to the Northeast, your decision on the trail Camera.
Looking forward to seeing you.
Twinkee Kid

Those flying remember you are NOT supposed to have BUTANE (Thermocells) in luggage !!!
Tom, I'm driving from Michigan and I'll make sure I load up on butane and pads for those that have a hard time getting them there.
Yellow-Dog,
Sounds good. They are at a premium in the Candadian Bush !!
well if you do have the TC bottles in your luggage you may want to say the bottles are for a portable hair drier.2 oz Butane bottles are legal to have for hair driers.Never works for me but then I have no hair bd
Well now I started a little project for Bowdoc...seems last year, he mentioned something about jumping out of his tree with spear in hand :scared: Not finished as I need to get it sharpened and add some feathers & beads :biglaugh: Doc
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/tippit/Quebec%20Quest%202010/BowdocsSpear001-1.jpg)
I heard about a guy who wanted to kill a bear with a spear but the state game laws said a spear was illegal. So he fletched up his spear with three five-inch parabolics and called it a really heavy arrow. Sounds like something Bowdoc might do. UB
What color parabolics do you want bowdoc! Doc
wow I thought you guy's did NOT I repete did NOT hear that about the spear. Please note I am one year older much more beat up then last year about 10 pounds lighter and been thinking alot about the spear deal.Man I just can not run fast like in the old days.Hey doc maybe Uncle Barry is up for the spear test ????? see ya all real soon Tom's real dad bd
What's with this part about "running fast"?.. I'm out. Besides, I thought you weren't supposed to run. I was picturing more of the hand-to-hand combat thing with Bowdoc, the spear and a bruin. UB
oh yeah U.B running will be a part of it I'am sure.I was thinking more about you all laughing your butts off watching video of me being mauled.I don't see that happen no way bd
Well Bowdoc, I had my camcorder all charged up  Guess I'd better go to plan B.
This is actually how I start my Team Tippit broadheads ;) Doc
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/tippit/Quebec%20Quest%202010/BowdocsSpear0042.jpg)
thats pretty cool doc you had me going for about 2 minutes.I figured ifen you was to go to the trouble of making the spear I thought I'd have to use it.Figured instead of the tree stand I'd go for the ground blind maybe lure him into the blind with me.Wow doc you saved my bacon again bd
Tom,
Thanks for taking the time to answer all my questions last nite! I really appreciate it!!
More funds headed your way!!
Is it JUNE YET???????? :banghead:
Looking forward to metting you Mark.Might have you CRACK "Bowdocs" back or neck while you are in camp !!!
holy smokes I need to start packing for real with just over a month to go.
Diablo are you getting the TC kits again ? and please please don't forget to pack my orange vest I can not afford any tickets.
I'am looking forward to meeting new friends and seeing old one's.
Hey Mark I'am also looking forward to meeting you and you'll get to see me cracking Tommy's neck oh thats right he don't have one never mind bd
Hey guys; I have a quick question for you who are going to be there the 2nd week. I am getting the ingrediants together for the chili, and I need to know which statement you would most likly say while eating Chili.
1. Mommy Mommy, this Chili is to hot
2. You should sweat a little when you eat Chili
3. as long as you brought the asbestos Toilet paper we are good
Thanks in advance for your responce
1-2 or 3 all of the above or none of the above well I'd say its 50 miles each way to the nearest ice cream and its a painful ride for everyone involed.Maybe bring the hot stuff on the side and let the boy's have at it ? bd
My vote is for "Come on, Ice Cream"! If you can't say that after the fact, then it ain't real chili!
LD
How about this!! :D
Dang Bowdoc, I have never seen anybody with smoke coming out of there ears!! Are you OK?
:bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
The last bout with chili bears tree stands and baby wipes.I severd the chili to the boy's for lunch and there were several guy's who had to return to camp early from the evening hunt and yes the bowdoc was one of those fellows.Well I never actually made it back to camp bd
Was that my bear chili? I know as soon as I walked in from the hunt that day 'ole Hogdancer exclaimed: "You ruined my hunt!" Hell, I was fartin' up a storm too but I figured I was just helping the stink bait! :biglaugh:
Steve I did'nt mention any names at all bd
Did a little Bear Quest forging today. Here's what's left of Bowdoc Spear :bigsmyl: The broadheads will finish in around 300 grains...Doc
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/tippit/Quebec%20Quest%202010/QuebecQuest2010002.jpg)
those are sweet
wow doc I must say those are very nice looking broadheads and blades and am I ever glad the spear is gone for good I feel better already thanks doc bd
Jeff, I'm ready to see some of those broadheads mounted on some cane arrows! Good looking stuff.
Benjy
Benjy,
I decide to half them on insted of making a post insert. Thought by drilling out the center of the cane, it might weaken it too much.
Also I'll grind out that alligator point this weekend ;) Doc
Wow tippit! Very impressive!
Cannot wait to see the finished product!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
Finished the heads today...quenched, tempered and hit my desired weight (297 & 305 grains). Ground a LW single bevel with a convex edge. Pretty similar to Mr Big's 2009 broadhead that seemed to work just fine :)
Plus forged up a No Frills Bear Skinner. I wanted to see how quick I could make one start to finish...just under two hours. Doc
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/tippit/Quebec%20Quest%202010/QuebecQuest2010011.jpg)
Very Nice, Very Nice, Very Nice !!!!
Looks like the bears are in trouble again; real NICE work Doc! Wish I could be there this year,I know you guys will have a great time.
Tom, i have a change of plans for BBQ to bring, We just made some awsome homemade sasage and i would like to bring that instead, 5lbs bulk, and 5 lbs link. thats about 50 links twice the size of a hotdog there great for lunch grilled with onions an peppers. We can use the bulk sasage for breakfast. Not sure how much wild turkey im gonna have but im gonna bring what i have. I cant wait to get there an meet everybody, im shooting everyday tring to stay sharp. This will be my first trip an looking forward to seeing some new country.
Chad
Who'll be in week two? Had an email from a fellow Tradganger a while back but I can't find it now. He was looking to get some dialogue going between the week two guys. Can't wait to meet all of you on this great hunt. PM's welcome :)
Mike
Who's in week two?? It really doesn't matter because after the A-Team leaves from week one there likely won't be any bears left for you guys! 8^) I'm just teasing because there are PLENTY of bears. In fact, I think week two does just as well as week one, if not better. Looking forward to this hunt again... BIG TIME!! UB
Awwww c'mon Uncle Barry-tell the truth!
First week bears:
Second week bears:
(http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2/stevet_01/teddy.jpg) :D
I'm really looking forward to another season in La Tuque. In fact I'm already Loaded for Bear...Doc
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/tippit/Quebec%20Quest%202010/QuebecQuest2010012-1.jpg)
Week 2 for me, thats a pretty scarry brown bear in the pic above.
Were coming from good old Carrsville, Va. on the 2nd week. Cant wait to get there.
Chad Tomlin
Now I'm really fired up, looks like week two is the week for a Cinnamon bear
Good looking worh there Doc
Crap I feel bad because I'll have to be there both weeks man that sucks bd
"Fish Chowder" stink bait is brewing.I am heavily stocked with GREASE for tracking pads in front of bait.
Dang Tippet!! That is some very, very, impressive work on your knives and BH's!
What did you use to attach your broadheads to those cain arrows??
UB>>>--------> You just keep spreading all those Chocolate Chip Cookies around the bait sites and my Bear will be big and fat by the time I get there!! :)
YellowDog, I will be there the second week! Shoot me a PM!!
Cracker: I don't actually use chocolate chip cookies, I use the chocolate chips/morsels themselves. Being brown they're tough to see in the dead leaves/spring debris so the bears need to scratch around and sniff them out. If you scatter them around the baitsite they'll spend hours searching them out. I used to use mini-marshmallows but their white color is too easy to find by the birds, etc. The bears suck them in like a vacuum-cleaner. The chocolate chips last a lot longer. bw
Barry I may be bringing some Morsels,I can get #25 or #50 !!!!!! Great idea of yours to keep Bears occupied. Problem is I LOVE the Morsels myself !!
Thanks UB!! Very good suggestion!! I can see the BQV group now at the local grocery store buying up all the Chocolate Morsals they have in stock! Stork Clerk asked WHY? Cause we are making the worlds largest Chocolate Chip Bear Cookie!!!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
Barry told us about that tip last year or the one before.Last year the first nite in my stand I didn't quite like the position of the shot on the bait and I had brought some butterscotch chips as per BWs tip.The second evening I threw some in an angle I like better not right on the bait site but on a trail passing near my stand. The bear came in on that trail and found the chips and stopped started turning diff. angles and eating them. When my shot was good and he was busy I took it and made a good shot.It is a good way to keep them busy and not as nervous as right on the bait in my opinion.Good luck to all and I already know you'll will have fun.Kip
Added to my list with extra butane and Thermacell pads*******chocolate chips :)
Dang Jeff those are gorgeous!!
you going for 400 this yr??
I want to carry it and beat Tommy's record! :D
Great work as always Jeff!
Steve,
Records are meant to be broken :-)
I will not be in the bear carry this year myself.I think I'll stick to doing pics its much safer and then the broken part will not be my back see ya real soon girls bd
Tom,
You get that 400 pounder and I'll personally carry it out for ya!
Course I'll get to use my knives and have it'll be all packaged up for the freezer. Lets see 10 trips...40# should just about do it :bigsmyl: Doc
Doc that way I could help you out with the load. We could walk the same path way and chit chat along the trail drink a few swamp brews together you and I it'll be great Doc I can't hardly wait bd
Ok Doc,
Keep them knifes sharp !!! SWAMP BREW that brings back funny memories on previous Bear Hunt adventure w/Bowdoc & Doctari "Tippit" Springador.
I still wake up laughing over the swamp brew geezus now that was funny bd

:wavey: BD,
How can you tell that the broadhead is a 1963? What is the identifying mark that separates the broadhead pictured from a 1962 or a 1964? I'm just curious how you are able to zero in on the exact year.
Thanks buddy. See you in a few weeks. :campfire:
The shape of the vent wholes in the broadhead determines the years.Although the 1956' the 1st year of production had a raised Ferrule the only year for that.
Okay, thanks.
A friend was cleaning out some stuff he had laying around and he sent me box with 11 of those same BHs. I was just about to take a pic and post to find out what they were. Thanks for the info.
Gatekeeper I hit the road in 21 days! Can't wait!
I just talked to BQ Camp cook & entertainment "BOWDOC".He has been working on some NEW material for side-show he puts on in camp !!!

I still chuckle when I think of BD explaining to me how "switch" is played. He seemed a little discussed with me when I asked what he was talking about.
To quote BD "I do all the work around here while no-neck sits around playing switch."
OK Gatekeeper, so how do you play "SWITCH"?? :banghead:
Played "Switch" with my dad a few times... Didn't much like it, hope we don't play it much in camp this year. :campfire:
oh no thats the wrong switch I'll have to explain it to you when we arrive in Que'bec bd
Sounds like a fresh batch of victims Donnie. Tom- XL on the shirt for me. Can't wait to see you guys in LaTuque. GY
So what kind of fishing tackle do I need to bring? I am not a very big fisherman, so I would need to buy most of the stuff. I only have rubber worms to fish for the bass in the swamps around here.
the best tackle to bring for walleye would be a rod with maybe 6 lb test line and some weighted jig heads in a few different colors. We can purchase leaches at the camp. However if you bring some large lures there are huge fish in the lake as well.I think there is around 50 different types fish in the river right near the camp from brook trout to muskie with some huge muskie you may need 20 lb test and a good casting rod bd
Brill16hockey, Tom said there would be some fishing tackle in camp for us to use! Most of the other supplies you should be able to purchase while there! Bait and fishing license that is!
Awesome! I can't wait to get there. Its getting so close!
Good luck to all the BQ crew. Can't wait to hear the stories and see the pics again this year.
Been eyeing the weather up at la tuque and it looks like it'll be in the 90s next week. What are the typical temps in June?
The temps the last few years have been very comfortable on stand once the sun goes down a sweater or light wool jacket or shirt is good. There has been years where there has been skim of ice on puddles in the AM and as hot as
104 degrees. The campfire at night has been great not to hot not to cold.
Usually the 1st bait trip there are NO bugs, but they are waiting for us the 2nd bait trip !!!
Come on Tom, you promised me no bugs, temp in the 50's, and a 300# BEAR!!! :knothead: :help: :help: :help:
I thought I said PLENTY of Bugs,Temperature range could vary 50 degrees from morning to evening and I would carry out a 300# Bear if you kill one !!
You better shoot that 300# bear this year...don't know how many more times Ole Tom can do that :bigsmyl: Doc
God Willing & The Crick don't rise many more years.Someday I hope to be in shape too !!!!
Ya'll like my new huntin boots?????
:bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
Hey Tommy, I will be in need of a good workout up there and some 300# lunges sound pretty nice! I guess I need to shoot a big bear!
BC the bugs will love your new hunting boots if those little blood suckers find a weak link in your armor they'll eat well bd
Hey bowdoc, I was wearing those Crocks on a hog hunt cause I had a toe injury and they were the only shoes I wear due to the pain! They are good camp shoes though!
The good news, my big toe is healed and I can now wear real boots!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
Brill16, I hope you will give me some secrets to shedding some baby fat I want 6 pack abs and be cut up like a rug !!!!!
If you put me in front of a bear I will give you all the secrets you can handle!
I don't know about 6 pack abs...but cut up like a rug and haulin' out 300# bears, I can do. Bringin' a couple of Bad Boys with me to help...skin 'em & cut 'em up ;) Doc
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v110/tippit/Quebec%20Quest%202010/BearQuestCarry008.jpg)
Wow, you make some beautiful knives. I always enjoy looking at them!
You rock Doc! Dang you can make some great knives and they look sharpe! Cannot wait to see them in person!
Mounted up some brand new 40 year old bear Razor heads and went out and test shot them today.... Looks bad for the bears.
Great knives Doc.
Hope to get the one you built for me bloody this year!!!!
-Bill

Leaving for "stink bait" duty tomorrow 5pm.
Will report back early next week.
Enjoy the holiday, be safe and remember...
I am a phys ed teacher in the south hills of Pittsburgh, PA, and this morning I was told I couldnt take the kids out on the field because there was a bear walking around out there! I think my bear mojo was just drawing them in, even in the city!
Good luck Bill!
I sure wish I was going to be there. I hope that you all have a good time.
I think the guys in week two look a whole lot better than the guys in week one!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
I am leaving 7:15 PM this evening for 1st bait trip, Bill Moran & Bill Langer will be joining me.We will make marathon bait run #1. Will keep you posted.
A 400 post thread and the hunt hasn't even started yet. Do I detect some anxiety? Ha. This is gonna be good... again. Drive careful guys.. and a special thanks to all. BW
All,
AS Bowdoc would say " It wont be long now ladies." Looking forward to seeing everybody in La Tuque, Quebec for Bear Quest 4.
Many forest fires in that region right now. LaTuque is under siege!
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/montreal/story/2010/05/28/quebec-forest-fires-evacuations.html
The camp is in the prohibited zone as we speak.
http://www.sopfeu.qc.ca/en/etat_de_la_situation/carte_des_incendies.php
Click on the map icon. once you zoom in on La Tuque check the «Prohibition d'accès et de circulation en forêt» box to the right of the map. A red zone appears. That's the prohibited zone.
Camp is barely in the zone, North/North-Est of Rapide-Blanc.
Hope Tom and the guys get to bait this week-end.
I'm sure they are safe, no worries.
Simon
Hope all is well in Quebec. Pray that all involved in that neck of the woods are safe. We've had our share of nasty forest fires here in Michigan in the past and they are devastating.
Well myself,Bill Langer & Bill Moran arrived back at my house from 1st BQ4 bait trip about 4:45 pm today. It was a marathon run.We were able to get out 20 baits,#21 we where not able to put in because of fire's North and road was closed as precauation. We saw NO Fires or Fire Engines,Fire Fighters,Helicopters and such which was good news. There has been fires before twice in the past 20 years near & around, but area was not closed.Hopefully there will be RAIN soon !! All baits have Pastries,at least 5 gallons of grease in front of bait as tracking pit,James Valley Scent Paste,4 different sprays the Bears should be starting to come for miles !!! Well got to go outside and unpack & then start to REPACK for bait trip # 2 on Thursday !!!
Thanks for your effort Tom! I know everyone appreciates it!!
Great news about the fires at this point (if there IS a way for news about fires to be great!)
I wondered what kind of impact they may be having on the area. It's good to hear the "show" can go on!
Barry told me I was hunting number 21? That figures.
Marty,
What is your favorite # ?
Is that like pick a number between one and five?
Just curious hope you pick a number from hat that
is a winner !!!!
You're gonna pick for me, Tom, so I have someone to blame!
Things look great up in Quebec Boys!!!!!
Get ready for an awesome time.
DO NOT FORGET YOUR SAFETY BELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Survived a 10 ft' fall from the Wensel stand. Very sore but alive. Will fill you all in around the camp fire.
Think BEAR Guys- see ya in 2 weeks.
-Bill
I can't wait to get up there, maybe the fires will burn all around the areas outside of the immediate area of the baits and all the bears will be looking for food at our baits maybeeeeeeeeeeee.See you all real soon.
Wild Bill: I told TP if I would have left some little pointed stakes at the bottom of the tree I would have got a Lunger instead of a Langer. Glad you're okay. Thanks for being my "test pilot". Good job! UB
this has been hammering on us for over 8 months and I held out,I held out until the last 14 day time limit to purchase my ticket and or to come clean and fess up to you guys.
I had to talk with Tommy prior to him going on the bait run last thursday and it was the second hardest thing I've had to do in some time believe me it hurt me all the way to the pit of my gut.
My wife has been sick for sometime but the good news is she's getting better. It was the bull ride from hell believe me.Life can change in the blink of an eye and this has consumed our whole family.Like I said she's getting better and may be able to come home sometime this month.
I have got to be here with her everyday just like I do now.I go there everyday no matter how things are going for me or what I have to do more then anything else she needs my support right now and I would never let her down after putting up with my goat smelling ass for 40 years ? not gonna happen I'am just not going to be able to make the trip this year and I know in my heart of hearts you guy's understand bd
100%
S.
Bowdoc sent you a P.M. few days ago.
I sure am sorry you can not make it this year Bowdoc. Tom called yesterday and filled me in. We will miss you but you are where you need to be and there is always next year. We hope your wife continues to get better.
Of course we understand.
Sorry to read this Don, it gives me a heavy heart. I'll miss you in camp my friend. :campfire:
Looks like all the bald bears will be safe this year. :goldtooth:
Bowdoc: You know we're all very disappointed you won't be able to make it this year but know in your heart you're doing the right thing. Believe me when I say we all understand. Camp just won't be the same without you but rest assured you'll be with us in our thoughts. I'll be sure to tell our replacement of camp cook/entertainer that he SUCKS... just so we get you back 8^) Best wishes to Mrs. Bowdoc for a speedy recovery. xoxo UB
I'm sure everyone on this trip is very disappointed you won't be able to make it this year Bowdoc. But I know for certain there is nobody more disappointed than you. We all know how much this trip means to you, but of course you are doing what needs to be done.
You are an honorable man Sir, but then we have all known that all along. Glad to hear that progess continues, and hope it won't be long and you can bring her on home.
Your Right Whip, He's doing what he thinks is right. Mrs Doc's a first class Lady. And after spending a hr on phone with him this morning. I can tell ya, He's just as traumatized as any. She's a tough Lady and would ship his rear out on first plane, if she had her way about it. I have spent the last 12 yrs hunting, fishing, and shooting with him.. The fun he is to have around camp, will be missed. Just makes next year much more rewarding. Good luck to all, and can't wait to see Mr.Langer's next production. Best Wishes.
I am dissapointed that I will not get to meet you BD, but my thoughts and prayers are with you anyway. Stay strong.
bowdoc,
I know how much you love this gathering but you've made the right choice to be with your wife & family when she needs you most.
Swamp brew just won't be the same...but I'll save ya some for next year :) Doc
24/7 I'm there for ya BD.
bowdoc,
My heart goes out to you, but honestly, would expect nothing less. Best wishes to Mrs. Bowdoc for a speedy recovery. We'll miss you, but she needs you more. Stay strong, my friend.
LD
Family first Bowdoc. We are sure gonna miss you around camp. Please get the Mrs. well and give Her our prayers. Look forward to sharing another camp with you soon. Diablo, Big Bill and myself while baiting this weekend, would be driving to the next bait-silent-trying to catch our breath and one of us would blurt out "MAN I'M GONNA MISS BOWDOC THIS YEAR-BUT HE IS WHERE HE NEEDS TO BE" time and time again!!
U.B.-Been a "Stunt Double" more than once for the "Celebs" -glad to do it!! :knothead:
Seriously though-could not stop thinking about you like I do my Dad. Stepping onto the stand for the first nights hunt, if the strap had not fully broke on me, it may have on you, alone for maybe 8hrs or more before we would have thought to look for ya. "SHIVERS"
EVERYONE USE A CLIMBING AND SAFETY BELT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, That's scary Bill! Glad you're OK bud
Bill,
I'm sure glad you weren't hurt worse than you were. A very close friend fell from his stand last season and broke both leggs. He has not been able to go back to work yet.
I am to say the least VERY lucky! Bumps, minor cuts, head ache and sore back and neck. Blessed to be able to FEEL it at this point.
Lets be safe and have FUN for Bowdoc and the MRS.
-Bill
Bowdoc I'm going to miss you along with everyone else. Your family comes first without question we all understand. Dito UB the fill in cook sucks.Godbless Mrs Bowdoc.
Hey Girls
Don't be knockin the MAN willing to fill those BIG Bowdiddley shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember we have to eat that food...
We all know the new cook will do a great job. We just want Bowdoc to think he won't. UB
I already booked that fill-in cook starting here Friday night. Oooohhh Yea...the boys driving from Boston will have their bellies full for the ride up  Doc
Well BowDoc, I never got to meet you but I will miss you any-way!! Will also say a prayer for the speedy recovery of your wife! God Bless ya man!
BowDoc I look forward to meeting you on the next hunt, I'm glad to hear your wife is recovering.
Doc I'll be ready for that after a couple days of driving...what time does the dinner bell ring?
Thank you guy's yap she's gotta be getting better she just chewed me out for spending money so thats a real good sign.Fact is I'll actually be returning to one of my other loves at the end of this week... restoring old bows yeahaw we do not have PT until noon starting next week.
Hey I am going to add one more thing about this and you can take it for what its worth guy's no matter what no matter how no matter when and the sooner the better please please make sure and have the best medical insurence on you and your family you can get.Linda has the best insurence money can buy and everything has been paid in full up to this point.I know it sucks paying for it sometimes but well worth the money bd
Bowdoc: So I assume you accept medical insurance at your bow hospital? UB
Hey BW,
I hope it not one of the HMO's or PPO's!!!
They do not cover broken limbs!! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
George, You're welcome any time on Friday...in fact if you need a place to sleep Thursday night OK too...Doc
Thanks Jeff! I'll let you know my progress as I head north. George
Do people call each other by their tradgang handle on these trips or real names? I can't even rememeber names let alone handles!!!
Marty,
The names used depends on a few factors & time of day or night !!!
I know, Marty, I know...
I was trying to figure out which to call YOU! :goldtooth:
Closing in on one week-
Daryl... err... Hawkeye... ah... whatever!
Doc, I follow this thread every year and I know it pains you not to go. Your trad gang family is healthy and can wait on you. But momma needs you now. Your an honorable man sir. One day, one day. Prayers to you and the misses.
Mike
Barry has a unique nickname from college, but I'm not sure he would appreciate me letting the cat out of the bag! HA! All I can say is that it fits like a glove!!! You'll NEVER guess either!!!
Thanks guys your the best....OK now a few things I forgot to mention like your mothers are not going to be there with you so pick up after yourself don't lieve stuff laying around the camp keep it clean bring ear plugs don't eat to much and what ever you do do not foget your thermocell and hunter orange.
I don't want any of you guy's hunting my stand eather.I do not like people probing around when I'am not there. If one of you are lucky enough to draw the bd's stand aka the bowl you better make darn sure you have your hunting orange on as the gamies always like to walk in and chat with me for a few. They will take your bow arrows and anything else related to hunting so make sure and have your hunter orange ON.
Uncle Barry if I did take medical insurence here at bowdocs that would be so cool.Man for what they billed my wifes insurence company the first month I could have taken about 5 guy's hunting anywhere in the world for 2 weeks and still had money left over bd
I just got word from my Canadian connection that
"Things are back to Normal" in the Bush !!! BAIT Trip # 2 starts this evening 7 PM.Will keep you posted on return.
NOTE: Bring Swim trunks & water shoes to cool off & For those driving if you have Favorite TREESTAND cushion you are welcome to bring it.
ONE more THING : Satellite PHONE for BEAR CAMP
-----------------------------------------------
is in the mail to me.
Great to hear Tommy! Cant wait to get there.
ttt
Bowdoc, Whip said it the best:
"I'm sure everyone on this trip is very disappointed you won't be able to make it this year Bowdoc. But I know for certain there is nobody more disappointed than you. We all know how much this trip means to you, but of course you are doing what needs to be done."
I've been watching the posts from this hunt for the last two years and finally decided it's just too much fun to miss. Part of my decision to join this hunt was to be "harassed" by you for a week. Though I've never met you, I know you're an "honorable" man. Life takes it's twists and turns as we get older and we follow our heart and do the right thing. You have done the right thing. Now I know I'll be on Bear Quest V, reason being is that Mrs. Bowdoc will be at 100% and Bowdoc will be the camp cook and entertainment director. Bear Quest IV is going to be great but Bear Quest V is going to be even better. Don't ever underestimate the power of prayer, and I'm sure you have plenty coming your way.
From the looks of the weather map, it has been raining off and on for a good bit at Bow Quest camp north of La Tuque. Good news!!
The weather is looking good for the hunt. Showing rain now and the next few days but clearing. High around 90 during the day and 50s at night, perfect snoozing weather. Fires look to be under control.
The hunt Gods have shined upon us. Time to pack!!!
Bowdoc, Godsspeed on your wifes recovery.
Bowdoc I missed you last year when my schedule caused me to back out now I will have to return next year to catch up with you . Prayers sent for your Goodwife . I have to call Mike from Conn. to hook up with him about sharing a ride . I have been away for a few weeks and haven't been on here , always something causes me to pile things up at the last minute . BD be well , Fred
Hello Fellows,
Myself & Big Bill Moran pulled into my yard about 5 pm from # 2 run to Canada, will give update soon.Weather was fairly COOL & rained ALL day & night yesterday.

I LOVE it !!!
TEMORARILY LOCKED
The Temp lock was St Jude related....have fun you guys....in different circumstances....I'd be with yall.
Momma Brill started baking the cookies... I started piling stuff up that I will be taking in my living room... Now I just need the next two weeks to go quickly!
I was looking at the lineup of people going the first week and holy crap is it stacked! I hope there are still bears in Canada for us late comers!
Gotta crock pot of burrito mix and a case of Depends just in case things go south!!
Morning Boys,
Sorry for not getting back with more Bait Trip #2 info.BIll Moran & I humped our butts off got stands in place (just need a few steps & sticks which I will have for Saturday). All the baits had actitivity with numerous ones being cleaned out !! It seemed cooler than normal and no were near the bugs 2nd bait trip as 1st.It was raining all day saturday while we baited. The traps have been set so now we leave it up to the BEAR GODS.
P.S. Brill16 I hear you guys are better shots than week # 1 !!!!!!!!!!!
Burrito Mix & Cookies great combo !!
They may be better shots but 1st weekers are better looking!
wow guy's I know this will be the best of the best of bear quest. The action will speak for itself.Thats one thing about BQ on my many visits I've always seen plenty of bears and had plenty of chances. Some bowman will hold out for mister big and thats cool some just what a chance to arrow a critter no matter some will sleep in the tree and for those nappers no not those nappers the nappers in trees ? bring your tree strip and buckle up.
I wish you all the best of luck this spring be safe and enjoy bd
Thanks BD! I was really looking forward to meeting you! Ahhhhh, there is always next years BQ! :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
Looking forward to getting there, practice is over for me, it is what it is. got a nasty cut on my index finger yesterday ( string finger) so I have 11 days to heal but shooting will be out.
I don't know about that better looking stuff Bill there were some odd ducks the first week last year or was that the second week ????? bd
brill16,
The first weekers are just warm-up, all hype. Everyone knows the real huntin' is the second week!
Honest, that's what bowdoc told me last year, so it's gotta be true!
LD
Haha, yeah they can warm up the tree stands before we get there. Check the stability of the stands, cut nice shooting lanes, and get the little bears out of the way before we get there!
Bill, We will see at Motel 9 in La Tuque on Friday or early Saturday morning. Mike
Mike,
Daryl and I plan on being at the Motel 9 sometime Friday afternoon or evening. See ya there!
Sounds good guys.Because of space restraint and only 2 vehicles leaving from my house FRIDAY evening for hunt I decided there will NOT be any ATV's in camp and we will be just fine without them.
If any of you guys have any hand pruners you are welcome to bring them along :-)
Good luck to all you 2nd week Bear Questers.....I just hope there is a couple bears left for ya! :D
NOTE : Anyone going on 1st week want to detour and drive to my house for ride up FRIDAY night ? I am in need of vehicles to BRING up goodies for hunt. NO messy stuff included.
Tom,
Can you squeeze things in to get to the border? We will have an extra vehicle and need another driver for one truck at the border? Doc
One day and a WAKE-UP and we are on our way to Bear camp.
Tom, I lost my cell phone in Atlanta. Still have my same #...But I need a couple of numbers:
Yours, Barry, & PV
PM sent

Oh boy! :scared:
I just hung up with Marty. He said his stomach was upset and he didn't know if it was from the chilli hot dogs or the red beans and rice he ate...
Enjoy the ride Jeff
PV,
Your cooking GasX bergers Friday night!

He's such a delicate little flower :(
"all Barry can do is put Marty on the game!" you ever heard a version of that 300 times Curt?
Took advantage of the rainy day and fixed 2 gallon of bear camp chili today. I tested it out, won't know until tomorrow how it came out.
joebuck,
I just read that in Barry's book. I think I should of held off reading the book as I took Barry up to BQ once before...didn't need any books on tape for the ride :)
Thought I'd share a few memories from last year's Bear Quest. Looking forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones.
*****Sorry bud, but you need to re-size your pix no wider than 640 pixels...Thanx*******
Gonna miss you this year Bowdoc. Get Mama well, and we'll see you next year.
Everyone travel safe and we'll see you in a few days.
Great shots Bill!!!
Tippet I don't think I've got any GasX elk burger
;) Does your vehicle have roof racks?
Just snagged the Bowdoc 59' Kodiak on the St Judes auction :) :) :) Had my bear bows picked out and ready for this trip, now it's changed. Sent payment through PayPal as soon as the auction closed, just hope I get it in time to pack it up and close the deal in La Tuque with it. Bowdoc, wish you could be there with us. Like I said, Bear Quest IV is going to be great, Bear Quest V will be better with Bowdoc there
Need to leave home in 5 hours to start the journey, but can't imagine falling asleep.
I think tomorrow is going to be a L-O-N-G day, but a good one! I look forward to the trek with Bill, and to meeting all of you!!
Daryl
Man am I ever going to miss this hunt! Oh well theres always next year! Have an awesome (and safe) time guys!
One day and a wake up!!!

If I had a dollar for every time I heard it, I'd be on this trip with these guys! To be honest though, mostly my fault, I wasn't exactly "on my game" while I was there
You girls have a great trip! Bear hunting is bear hunting, and that part will no doubt be good, but to get to share a camp with the likes of the crews you have on both weeks? You are in for a good time!
Wish I could be there, but I sure will be thinking about it for the next two weeks and looking forward to the stories to follow.
Well, I'm at the airport- it's 77 degrees in Florida already- so lookin forward to some cooler weather! I hope Barry puts me on something for a change! Having a lobster dinner with him tonite somewhere in New Hampshire- on him!!!! I like a little lobster with my butter! Lookin forward to redeeming my " small" bear reputation. Never look thru binoculars at a bear at 10 yds- they ALL look big. Left them at home thus time.
JOEBUCK
ya'll take care of my buddies Marty and Bonecracker..both will be a pain in the arse for ya'll
Hey Joey,
Never fear I still can hang a treestand with little fear!
I still manage to pull a 65lb bow and I definitely reap what I sow!
I need litte help getting dressed and you now I can mess with the best of U.
Now BD will not be in Canada but you know somebody will step up to the plate and keep us in stitches!
So forgive my dang weak poem but I can still hold my own at 51!
Today is my Birthday!!!!
:knothead: :knothead:
Bonecracker,
What are you talking about...you're just a Pup! Doc...elderstatesman!
I am older than Joebuck and I can run circles around him all day long!
:banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
Wait till you spend a week with my buddy Marty, the pain will move from your jaw....
You guys keep an eye on Marty, when he sees how low those stands are, he'll be wanting to sit with one of you.
Have a safe trip on the midnight run tomorrow. Looking foward to the stories.
I am looking forward to asking Marty to demonstrate his "Floating Anchor" !!!!
OoooooH, Don't go there :scared:
Keep it rubber side down tonight lady's be safe bd
Now Guru- you really wanna start this discussion? Floating anchor has worked on many continents! And not worked :(
do not stand behind marty when he draws the string, i have seen him pull a string slap off the tips by over drawing....
BoneCracker.....51, single and sterile...you have a lot of living ahead of you
No sir, That's why I said "don't go there" ;) :archer2:
Hey Curt-Grabbed those pics from last years file
and did not pay attention to size,SORRY.
Safe travel Boys-See ya in LA Tuque!!
-Bill
Can't wait to get there but will be a day late grandaughters dance recital. Go easy on the replacement cook he's not a bad guy and you have to eat his cooking for a week.
Tippit. Got stuck in traffic in NY. I'll be there in the morning. Long drive but not bad. See you soon George
Tippit: I picked up Marty this afternoon. We hit Kittery Trading Post. Had fried clams/scallops for lunch and a big lobster dinner with corn on the cob, salad, cornbread, steamers, etc. for a "welcome to New England" feast. The day was hectic but everything going smooth. See you tomorrow. Thanks. UB
By the way, for those who think Quebec doesn't have big bears check out the thread and photo on TG of the excellent bear Ken Taylor killed last week. He shot it from a ground blind at 6 feet. If that won't get the heart pumping I don't know what will! BW

The "Marty Floating Anchor" technique was developed due to the environmental constants found in the swamps of Okeechobee. By Marty's own account he has been developing it for 20-25 years The Technique just now being recognized outside a very tiny circle of true admirers.
I have witnessed this technique bring home more bacon / venison then 5 other hunters combined using more accepted methods.
There are more people shooting "Marty's Floating Technique" then are willing to admit. Heck I have seen Guru, Terry, Ferrett, Elkken and Sunnyhill all try and emulate the "Marty Floating Anchor" while in camp. Even I have been know to use the "MFA" from time to time but have yet to master it.
The "MFA" is an advanced Trad Hunting Technique not to be tried by the faint of heart, or thin skinned. Use of "MFA" may lead to bad jokes/posts, twitters of giggles, or huge outbursts of laughter.
Best of Luck to you Marty. Bring me home a bear claw..not the kind you eat.
I am looking forward to being taught the MFA.We leave in 2 hours. Will have a couple stories on return 6/26/10'/
STAY TUNED ...............

Had dinner last night at the Springer's with Tom Porter, Barry Wensel, George Galan, Marty McMahon, and Paul VImnotgoingtotrytospellhislastname. Great time and a great group of guys! It was damn near physically painful to watch them head off without me this year (four years in a row I've been going!) :banghead: but I wouldn't have missed last night! If you get pancakes instead of the bacon and eggs you wanted for breakfast, then you know you should have added a few hand gestures when you ordered.

Tippit won his own knife again! Very questionable! On the way home wiith winner now,Barry Wensel is officially a loser- again- 3 years in a row! Good time had by all- except Barry! What happens in La Tuque - stays in La Tuque! Who's Bowdoc anyhow? Tom Phillips says we may not be invited back - together that is. Lots of Canadians there.
Good to hear from ya bud :clapper:
These guys missed you Marty

Nice job Marty......199#......u were so close!!! Great camp chemistry, good time had by all
La Tuque did not let us down. I think the numbers are 10 or 11 bears taken in the first week . The best news is every body saw bear and had a good time.
BEAR QUEST 4 FACTS(week 1)
1)A good time was had by all.
2)There are a lot of bears.
3)We needed Shawn Webb to show us how to catch the Walleye's.
4)Bowdoc was missed by all.
5)Tom Phillips still has no neck.
6)Uncle Barry was first in line for all the meals.
7)The Marty and Uncle Barry show is off the charts.
8)The stink bait really stinks.
9)John "Marty" Mcmahon is much prettier than I had pictured.
10)Mike Mitten is built like a tank.
11) Tippit showed us how it was done again.
12) At least 4 guys shot there first Black Bear.
13) George can make a Apple cobbler like none other.
14) Wapiti Mike does not know how to stay in a convoy.
15)Uncle Barry knows how to wreck a pair of underwear.
16) Marty's legs are whiter than a jar of mayonaise.
17)Darryl is the nicest guy I ever met.
18)Bill Kisner knows how to make ribs.
19)A wolf was seen at the Moose Tower stand.
20)Life is good in La Tuque.
Ride home with Barry & Marty show was a hoot...great way to end the trip. Got Marty & Gatekeeper off to airport.
No matter what they say, my bear was Not tied to a tree...tippit
what the hell you guy's did not take any pics ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? bd
Easy Thunder- we're still tired from lookin all over for Barry's bear. Scar tissue so built up from previous 3 years of wounding it that he must not have gotten penetration! I'm in Logan airport surrounded by Obama supporters- scarier than those low stands on this bear hunt. I figure Tom Phillips is ascared of heights. Mike Mitten didn't even need tree steps!
Got a little one for ya bowdoc...329# I'll get more up later. It's a good possibility that 3 of the 10 bears were P&Y...Doc

Jeff that is another beauty. Congratulations. Who packed that one?
Congratulations Doc, he's a beauty. Glad to hear everyone had a great time; now waiting for stories and pics.
wow Doc that one is outstanding ya know though sooner or later those Canadian guys your paying to fatten those bear up all years gonna cost ya ? great job Doc sorry I was not there the give you a big bowdoc huge fine job bd
Nate,
Tom, Fred Gimbel, Bill Kissner, & Suzie helped me track him. Tom said he'd be happy to try and carry him out...but Bill had a bump knee and Fred & I couldn't begin to lift him onto Tom's shoulders. I kinda think he knew that before he made the offer though  Doc
Well he is a beautiful animal. Congrat's again. When you get a chance let's hear the story.
CONGRATULATIONS TIPPIT! Can't wait till next year. Charles :clapper:
This was a good hunt and even better group of guys. We got off to an early start and Tom L. brought in a 274# the first night. I saw bears every day and with over 18 bear sights total for the week, I held out for a nice representative. The proper shot angle was not presented to me however, so I came home with great video footage and many good memories.
On the second to the last evening I passed up 5 bears including a tall lanky one with high-set ears, small feet, and a long face like a collie-dog. I was sure it was a sow. The next day Marty proved me wrong by shooting the same bear during the last hour of the hunt at his bait which was over a mile away from where I was hunting. It turned out to be a male that weighed 201# It was great! I stuck to my decisions and he stuck with his.... "If its black, DRAW BLACK!"
It was great to see experienced hunters like Fred get so excited like a kid on Christmas morning with the taking of a nice animal. Gatekeeper, Fred, and Brandan stayed out until 2:00AM collectiong bears from the bush!
The bear rut was getting under way and I'm sure the next group will have a good time with the many bears left behind.
Tom Phillips was a great host and the generousity of Paul did not go un-noticed.
Thank you all for making my trip such a good experience. Mike
 Can't wait to see some more pictures and read some more stories! Congratulations to all!
Nice bear Doc!
Congrats to all and looking forward to the stories and will be a long year till next June for me.Tippit "you the man" or you do not like to sell or give away your knives not sure which. But they are still hunting.Kip
I'm still a little rummy from the trip and long hours. It doesn't get dark until around 10 PM up there and gets light about 4:20 AM. The long hours are tough for a guy like me who wears hard contact lens, especially with the high pollen count and smokey air from all the Canadian forest fires. I'll go on record saying this was one of my all-time favorite hunts..ever The group in camp could not have been a better bunch of guys. Everyone got along great and everyone helped each other. Another GREAT job by Tom Phillips. Thank you Tom! It doesn't get any better. I frankly don't know where to start. This is my fourth Bear Quest in a row. Tom was kind enough to let me sit the Resurrection Stand for some "unfinished business" from previous years. I won't drag this out but in a nutshell I'm a pretty picky guy. I passed up a total of 28 bears on this hunt waiting for the big guy. He circled downwind once on Tuesday and again on Wednesday, ran other bears off and never came out of the thick stuff. Thursday Mike Mitten graciously offered me some James Valley Sow-In-Heat gel. I painted a branch straight upwind of his previous approach path in hopes he'd hit it before he hit my scent stream. It worked. At 7:32 PM he came in. He was the seventh bear I saw that day.. number 29 that week. Per usual I never heard him approach. When I first saw him he was at 12 yards sniffing the gel. He caught me sitting with the bow hung up. I waited him out. After he stepped through the first opening I got standing and my bow in hand. As I was trying to turn on the camcorder he looked up and saw me, turned and started to leave. I had the choice of filming him and not shooting, or shooting and not getting him on film. I chose door #2 knowing if I didn't shoot (he'd already seen me) he'd swing downwind, smell me and I'd lose my only opportunity. He was standing perfectly broadside at about 13 yards not looking at me. At the shot the shaft appeared to hit him absolutely perfect right behind the shoulder. It blew completely through him and stuck in the dirt on the far side. All I can say is my mind's eye saw it hit no more than two inches higher than if you placed it in by hand. He crashed off into what I refer to as a "death run". I watched him run for maybe 25yds. from entry, then all was quiet. Because I didn't hear a death bawl I played it safe and remained in the stand for a half hour. My arrow shaft was stuck in the ground and literally drenched with bright red blood. I'm not talking smears I'm talking an arrow that looked like you dipped it in a bucket of blood. But because I didn't see an immediate blood trail I decided to again play it safe and back out. Back at camp we made the decision to wait until morning. Because I was seeing so many bears I offered to take Daryl in to sit my stand until 9AM. Then "the crew" would show up, we'd track my bear and have tons of help getting him out, etc. By 9-ish Daryl had already passed up two bears. Now comes the part none of us can explain. It just doesn't seem physiologically possible when compared to what I witnessed. Starting from a blood-saked/drenched arrow thirteen experienced bowhunters and a tracking dog looked for a total of THIRTY man-hours and we never found a single drop of blood. Not a pin-head, not a smear... absolutely nothing. We gridded off the entire area and systematically tried to cover every square foot... absolutely nothing. You guys tell me.. I have no explanation. It just doesn't make any sense. Obviously something freak happened that I/we can't explain. Not just the loss of such a great animal, but the fact I didn't learn anything from the experience really bothers me. If a person screws up and one can capitalize on a mistake for future reference, it could painfully be chalked up as a learning experience. But the fact is if I had the entire experience to do over again I would not have done a thing differently. I want to thank everyone for the extreme effort that was put forth to try to recover my bear. I can walk away knowing we put in a 100% effort but it still hurts knowing I failed. And for that I truly apologize. I guess it's one of those things I can't eplain. Thank you all again for your help and friendships. It was an honor hunting with you guys. BW

Yeah only because he broke his sequin collar
I'm sure this is only a coincidence, but Barnum Bailey had "lost bear" fliers posted all over La Tuque. I sure hope they find Fozzie. :dunno:
By the way, what do you think the water looks like after you clean up from skinning a 329 pound bear? Here is a hint.

Barry, that was at least 4 paragraphs. How did you ever write a book??? All I can say about that whole big explanation (excuse) is;
LOSER!
Congrats Doc!
Doc, What can a guy say but OUSTANDING! I believe your starting to get the knack of this bear hunting stuff.
Barry, I was glad to help, but I'm not buying all of what you wrote.
I can tell by your eyes when you're lying even through the computer and I'm going to have to call you out on this one.

Good one Tom!
Tom, the last guy I saw wearing a hat like yours had a knife tucked away at the base of his neck between his shoulder blades and could throw it with deadly accuracy. He went by the name of "Mississippi!" Ha!
It was good hunting with you and I'm glad you got a nice bear! Mike
Mr. Gatekeeper I know what you mean, after spending a week with Barry's friend Mike Mitten that is! Never heard you leave this morning, but I felt you kiss my cheek. Thanks.
Hey Tippit- how can any of us post a bear picture after you lead with that one? That's as big as they got. We've all got "bear" envy!!

Sunrise the last morning. Great setting for a camp!
July 4th weekend of 2009 my brother Ricky, his fiance Jodi, and my brother, Tom, stayed late after a family picnic at our house to sit around the fire. Rick, out of the blue, said, "I'd like to go on a hunting trip with Dad." Without a second thought I said, "Bear Quest 4 with Tom Phillips would probably be the best." Tommy, Dad, and myself were already booked and we would keep it a secret from Dad. Now Rick is not a hunter, let alone a traditional bowhunter. But within a week his spot was booked with us on the first week and we got him shooting an old black-Black Widow SAIII I had hanging on the wall. Rick is a natural athlete and was shooting bullseyes at 15 yards the first day.
From left to right: My brother, Tom, Dad, Rick, and myself headed out to hunt and film eachother on the water baits in Quebec.
The secret of Rick going on the hunt was kept a secret from my father for 11 months. Long story short, my brother Tommy, Rick, and our friend Don Valley met the other hunters of Bear Quest 4 on Saturday June 12th and hunted that night. Rick sat with our brother Tommy and filmed him shooting his first bear on the hill billy stand. Dad, my brother-in-law Jon, and myself were at a dance recital on Saturday for our daughters Ellie (Jon's) and Brooke (mine). We left directly after the recital and arrived at camp on Sunday morning at 8 AM. Dad and Jon were very surprized to see Rick in camp. After an emotional meeting we got to skinning Tommy's 270+ lb. boar. (Someone post a pic of Tom's bear. I don't have one)
On Sunday evening, with my father filming, Rick took his first game animal ever with bow and arrow. It was his first time on stand and first arrow released at a big game animal ever!
Bill, which bait was Rick on?
The Cove fatman-the cove!
Cool.....I like the Cove.... :D
Biggie, not nice!!. Uncle Barry may be a Bullsh***ter but definitely not a LOSER. Watch out if he ever decides to come down to Georgia.
The Langer's are a great bunch of down to earth guys ! Tom got a monster the first night and Rick put a great shot on a bear his Father was filming , doesn't get any better then that , congrats guys on a great hunt and looking forward to sharing a camp again sometime . Fred
Awesome so far fellas, and congrats to all :notworthy:
Tique, you do realize Biggie's only kidding and him and Uncle B are long time friends :biglaugh:
I know Guru; just funnin with the Bigster.
I sat the moose tower and in the first 4 days saw 9 different bear with over 25 sightings.

On the 4th night, with rain falling, and darkness setting in, I had a grey wolf sneak up to less than 8 yards behind my stand. Unfortunately, I was not able to get it on film. But, I have to say that with all the many natural wonders that I have been fortunate enough to see out in the wild while bowhunting, this ranks right at the top of the list. I'm betting the word "surreal" would be the word used by most to explain the experience. To see that alpha predator so close, not knowing that I was perched just above him, made me feel connected to the wilderness.
On Thursday, night number 5, I had the 10th different bear come to the bait. With camera rolling I hit anchor and released. The arrow placement was perfect and the bear went less than 100 yards. Tippit, Brandon, and George helped me retrieve my bear just after dark. Thanks again guys for your help.
More pics and story tomorrow.
Awesome stories guys, hate I've not been able to make it back up there. It really is a special place.
Way to go Doc, I'm thrilled to death for you brother. Great reliving of the hunt with the tales and pics, keep it up please!
Hey Fred-time spent skinning bears with you and sharing camp with the rest of the bunch was fun.
Just another great hunt with Tradganger's, looking forward to many more. All are good folks and excellent bowhunters-learned alot this past week.
Looks like a dandy bear you got there Bill. Congrat's.
I've been bear hunting in La Tuque with Tom for past nine years but the last four Bear Quest years have been real special as I usually have a few guys flying or driving into Boston. It's always great getting together for dinner, a few stories, shooting bows, and maybe heading into the basement before the long drive to La Tuque.
This year Molly & I had Tom Porter, George Gallen, Marty, Barry, and PV gather before the drive. Steve Tottingham even came over for dinner as he'd been on the past three Quests. Tom will give us a call when he is heading out and we meet him at the Canadian border around midnight. Having Barry in the car makes the night speed by with all his stories and really gets you pumped to get hunting.
When we meet in camp, I knew this year was going to be different for me. For the past 8 years I've primarily hunted the water baits. But I was unable to help Tom on the baiting trips due to some recurring back problems...old age! I re-injured it on the Pig Gig and decided not to push it with a baiting trip. Those trips are great fun, but also a lot of work. Guys that help baiting are rightfully rewarded with their choice of stands to hunt.
So I told Tom to throw my name in the hat and I'd be more that happy with any of the stands. I have had more than my share of luck having had the biggest bear on two previous occasions so I even waited to pick toward the end of the draw.
I drew the Beaver Pond Stand. I had sat that stand one year after I'd already tagged out. Wanting to film some bears..but I'd never even seen a bear on it. There had been some big bears arrowed there but that's also true for just about any of the stands...remember this was another week of everyone one seeing and having opportunities to shoot a bear.
The first night I didn't even go out as I was beat from the drive up. Sunday night I sat it from 4 to 9:30pm and didn't see any bear activity. I could say I didn't hear any bears...but with my hearing that's the norm even when they are just a few yards away. Because of my lack of hearing I tend to sit and shoot from a sitting position just to keep my movement to a minimum.
Monday my Luck was about to Change in more ways than One...Doc
Doc, A guy like you getting another great bear would make me a believer in karma except a guy like Barry going 4-zip means the jury's still out on that one! :D Thanks again for inviting me over to dinner before you embarked. It's always been a great group of guys on the 4 years that I've gone and it was just so nice to be able to partake in some of the spirit of bear camp again this year even if that joy was nearly equaled by the pain of watching you guys drive away this year without me! :( ;)
Congratulations everybody! I look forward to seeing many of you at PigGig '11!
Me with Marty's bear. I looked this bear in the eyes 24 hours earlier and I'm glad I passed him. This could not have been taken by a nicer guy! He used a special SwampRooter bow made for him by JoeBuck

Awesome... All of you!!
I'm sad I missed this one... EEhh... Theres always next year!!
Congrats boys and great stories so far!!
:clapper:
All I can say is that it was one of the best weeks I have spent in a long time. Met a bunch of great guys, everyone worked together like I've never seen before and I got my first trad game kill. I'm still beat-up from the drive rolled in about 1:00am this morning and am still sifting through emails at work. Will post picks later today.
Glad to meet you George, and boy can you cook cobbler!!! Mike
you guys are killing me but keep it coming you gotta love it bd
Dave, I guess LOSER is kinda strong. I'm thinking maybe his recurve days are over....
This was my first bear hunt and I thank you all for making it so enjoyable and memorable. Tom and Paul did a wonderful job keeping us fed and organized and I can't thank you fell's enough for this experience. As for my hunt here it is:
I drew the Moose Path stand which worked out really well condidering Mike Mitten drew the Bird stand and they were a mile or so from each other. We drove from IL. together and this allowed us to share my vehicle going to and from our stands. Day 1, arrival day was a bust with no sightings. Day 2 we were in our stands by 3ish pm. At 7:40 I had a bear at 25 yards coming into the bait. Although I'm a greenhorn, it amazes me how an animal of this size can be so quiet. I told Mike prior to the trip I was going to size some bears up before choosing one to shoot. Those were wasted words, cause the moment I saw him I was shooting if given a good opportunity. He went directly to the barrel and starting picking out dessrt. This worked well since I was sitting down and I needed to stand, however, getting to that point was easier said than done. Thinking the bear was totally occupied and looking away I began to stand up only making it an inch off the seat before him staring directly at me, or through me. This contined over the course of at least a minute, when he ate, I rose, until I finally made it up. Throughout this time the bear seemed to tolerate whatever was in the tree but at times seemed a little uneasy. Unfortunately I still needed to get my bow off the hook and this is when the bear became more curious and less tolerable. As I went to grab the bow he stared through me then turned and took half a dozen bounds away, stopped and started working back in. At 15 yards he stopped and whoffed at me. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intimidated. Then he walked around the barrel and came to a stop directly underneath me. At this point I was ready with bow in hand and tension on the string. This stand was no more than 6 feet off the ground so we were getting to know each other a little more than I anticipated and really cared for. A few seconds went by and he decided the food in the barrel was more desirable than whatever was in the tree. He went back by the barrel and paced back and forth for a couple minutes before stopping broadside at 12 yards, thanks to the orange vest making noise from rubbing during the draw. He looked at me half way through my draw but I wasn't about to stop. I held at full draw for at least 15 seconds, making sure the tip of the arrow was where I needed it to be. Without a doubt I was the worst shot in camp and prior to this moment I continually told myself to not rush the shot. The rest was a flash, the orange fletched 2117 arrow hit the bear an inch higher than where I aimed but was really amazed to see a pss thru from my 46 # Bob Lee Recurve. The arrow stuck in the dirt and the bear beat it. 40 yards down the trail he ran down I watched him struggle on his feet and let out the death moan. I only had to drag this bear a little over 100 yards but found that they are incredibly achward and now know what dead weight means. After going 10 yards I decided to gut him out to lighten the load. By 8:45 the bear was loaded, sweat was running, and the truck was rolling to pick up Mike. The bear weighed approximately 138 lbs and has a beautiful coat.
I assisted a couple other fella's in camp with dragging out bears and after assisting Tom and Fred on Freds bear I realized how easy mine was. But I'll let Fred tell his tale.
Prior to this hunt I use to sit here and read these forums, wanting to be a part of the hunt but being intimidated probably for many reasons but primarily thinking I'm not as good a hunter as most, or not wanting to screw up, or piss someone off cause everyone has an opinion, or just because it was out of my comfort zone. Well, the not being as good of hunter as most is true, guess that should be expected when one hangs out on occasion with someone like Mike Mitten. But in truth everyone in this camp was unbelievably welcoming, even Marty, whom apparently has quite the reputation. My advice, if you have ever wanted to be a part of a hunt like BearQuest don't hesitate, do it. The Mitten's, Wensels, Langers are all like the little people like myself and are a pleasure to share camp with. All the fella's in camp, thank you.
Sorry for being long winded but I'll finish with this last piece of advice, don't try sleeping in the same room as Mike Mitten, won't happen.
Oh Great!....you guys are back.....just what I needed...another hunting story!!
I'll catch up tonight....
i gotta go on one of these hunts soon... the stories are awesome!
Brandan, you've been a member on this site for four years and you said more in one post then you have in four years. :campfire:
Keep it coming fellas :campfire:
I always look forward to the stories from this trip. It looks like you all had a great time.
Tom, it was my pleasure hunting with you. Thanks for the kind words about the drag but the team effort was necessary for that boar. Thursday night, or should I say Friday morning, is one that will never be forgotten in my lifetime. I've seen several men excited when harvesting animals, but to see the level you and Fred were at that night was off the charts. That was awesome and I was honored to be a part of it.
By the way, thanks for noticing the 4 year member without ever posting.
It's Monday evening and I just came back from a week-end at Bear Camp with the second week guys. I won't say much, I'll let the actual hunters tell their story but I can say this. Bears have been killed...
Simon
Nice Bears Mike...congratulations to all!
Bearquest 4 lived up to all my expectations . This is the second year I was privileged to attend . Tom does a super job from start to finish . Plan was for me to meet Tom at his place in Peru Mass. along with WapitiMike . Upon arrival we laid out everything that was going to Canada and stuffed it into Tom's truck and trailer along with overloading Mike's truck and trailer . Everything fit so my truck wasn't needed so I drove with Mike , I should have known what I was in for when he showed up wearing a Viking helmut complete with horns .With 5 hours driving to Tom's and 2 1/2 hours loading trucks with bait grub and gear we set out for camp . It takes about 5 hours to get to the Canadien border and another 5 hours to camp . Mike turned me onto those 5 hour energy drinks which I didn't beleive in at first but after taking one each we kept up a lively conversation the whole trip . I think I'm hooked now .
I drew the rollercoaster stand which is one of the furthest from camp . First 2 days saw nothing and on the third had a small rubbed anemic looking bear show up. 4th day everyone who weren't seeing bears got the oportunity to draw out of the hat for stands that weren't set yet and ones that bears were harvested on . I opted for a change and drew the grouper stand where George Galan of Florida fame shot his first ever bear a few nights before . He's a great guy and told me to show him what he should have waited for . Any bear with a bow is a trophy and accomplishment especially your first.
I sat the stand 2 nights and 1 morning and saw some pretty rubbed bears . Barry Wensel graciously lent me a trail cam so I could see if there was any night activity of big bears . I have shot a few bears so I can afford to be a little picky , at least for the first few days of the hunt . I was using my one piece short recurve made by Shawn Petersen which pulls 63# along with some homemade cedar arrows tipped with my favorite Simmon's Interceptor heads . I don't get to take it on many trips because it's not a takedown .I watched it hanging in the tree next to my stand for 5 days and decided to take a pic of it . Gotta go someone is stopping over to borrow some tools , be back , Fred
Ha! Tom Thats awesome! What an observation...Good Job Birddog!!
Brandon,
Good post I enjoyed the read. You hit the nail on the head about getting out and making it happen. Everytime I start planning a hunt their are always things that come up that make me think it might be wiser to put it off or cancel. Life is short and a person needs to make memories while they still can. All those memories will be great to relive when we are 80 years old. The only way you get like some of these sage vets is by doing it. Sounds like you had a great time. Congrats! Got any pictures? Would love to see them.
Chirs I posted a few pictures I had of Brandan and his bear I think on page 40 or 41. Mike
Fred not the 5 hour energy in the little orange bottle ?????? yikes man I bet you were wired for sound I'd loved to have seen that bd
The 6th day I sat in the grouper stand most of the morning seeing nothing . I went back to camp for lunch and to check the footage on the trailcam . 3 smaller bears were on night pics and 2 were there at daybreak . That night I decided I would have to choose which of the rubbed bears would make a decent shoulder mount . I sat in the tree enjoying life when a small bear came in with pretty good hair about 6:30 It came in but didn't give me a good shot and left . An hour later a bigger bear showed up but you could almost count the hairs on his side . I wrestled with myself over the shot long enough for him to get his fill and leave . I thought as usual I would regret not shooting as soon as he left but this time I just felt relaxed . That's weird for me . I had borrowed a smudge of "sow in heat " gel from Mike Mitten and placed some on a leaning pole in front of my stand . I noticed that the wind had shifted and was blowing from me to the lure so I got out of the tree and moved it off to the side a little . About 8:30 I was startled to see a good bear sneaking in on my left . He came to the pole that had the lure on it and sniffede it up and down apparently not concerned about my presence . At this point my pulse rate is in overedrive . He walks away from me and goes around behind me and comes out on the other side . I watched him walk under my stand through the grateing , which was only 6' off the ground , and return to the pole and sniff again . He made the mistake of crossing in front of me past the bait to the new lure location when I could control myself no longer and shot him slightly quartering away . He was 10' from the stand and if that doesn't make you sit up and pay attention then you're probably dead .I thought the shot was a little far back but the bear found out otherwise . He ran at top speed crashing through the thick brush for about 80 - 90 yards and let out a long bawl . I thought he was fooling me into thinking he was dead so I would follow him . I waited aboutg 15 minutes and with darkness coming on fast I moseyed over to where I last heard him . Thick trees and 4' high ferns left visibility about 6' . I decided to go back to camp and get some dinner and help , I was drained . Be right back , Fred
Fred- hurry up or I'll finish your story for you! I was there and you're killin me!
Upon ariving in camp I found out I wasn't the only lucky guy , Bill Langer shot a brute as did Tom Porter and Barry shot a good one . After a hurried dinner of I forget what , even though it was very good , Barry decided to take up his trail in the morning and Bill went after his bear with his gang . Tom Porter said he saw his bear go down so finding it wasn't an issue . He said we could help each other get them out , we enlisted Brandan whoi was as excited as we were . Best move of the night , Brandan may say he never hunted bears before but he is a natural at dragging them out . We found Tom's bear easily enough and had a nice drag out on the trail, Tom put an excellant shot on his bear it not going 40 yards . Aftewr getting the bear loaded we headed for my stand which is about 19 miles away . We walked into my stand and got some compass headings for the road as the woods are thick and it gets dark up there . The moon being only a sliver . I could only see the bear run about 30 yards but heard him go about 85 yards . We walked to where I thought I last heard him and we spread out doing a slow cautious search . After about 15 minutes I thought we wandered a little too far off so we took a compass heading and went back to the trail . We again enter the stand site and this time I climbed up into the stand and directed Tom and Brandan to where I last heard the bear by directing them by their flashlights . I then told them to wait there and I came to where they were and noting the location of the stand in relation to where they were we headed out again about 15 yards apart . I only took a couple steps and there he was ! 8 inches of my cedar arrow was sticking out of his side and upon pulling it out found it to be undamaged . The boar is a brute , my best so far with a logger-head . We dragged and pulled the bear to the trail and loaded him into the truck arriving back at camp at 1:30 am . Everyone was asleep be we were so fired up we weighed them and went to sleep . I have to find some pics , Fred
Congrats Fred :notworthy: :clapper:

Here's a good picture of Fred and his bucket headed bear! Had a great time with you Fred and you are my hero too! Great bear and we all met friends we didn't know we had!
I had planned on using a friend's selfbow and Benjy's tonkin cane arrow with a 300 gr tippit head. I had to leave the selfbow home as I couldn't get consistent right to left flight from it. Monday came and it looked like rain, I chose to leave the cane arrow in camp. Being longer than my carbon arrows, it didn't fit under a rain shield on my three arrow Eagles Flight quiver. I had made up a carbon team tippit arrow too, so if I got a chance it would be my ammo.
I was in stand around 3 pm and there didn't seem to be any activity around the bait site same as the day before. I didn't bother to take my card out of my trail camera...mistake #1! The weather changed with some wind and a little rain but it cleared fairly quickly. At 6pm I saw a large bear come out from the swamp of the beaver pond. He was about 50 yards behind the bait and limping on his left front leg. As soon as he hit the main trail, he took off on a dead run...no limp now. This seems to be the norm for me anyway, you see a bear then it runs away doing that same scenario 3-4 times before they feel confident to come into the bait. I figured I see he again in an hour or so.
At 7:30 there he was appearing like a silent ghost...course having poor hearing everything in the woods is like a silent ghost :) He hit the main trail, but this time he came right into the bait with No Hesitation. It was so fast I couldn't even turn my camcorder on. Picking up my bow and he was 4-5 yards right underneath me. He looked as big as last years Mr Big. He completely dwarfed the 55 gallon bucket. Everything was just instinct from that point on. My arrow hit him a little further back in the rib cage and a little high...but I was 6 feet above him and the shot was angling slightly quartering away. It wasn't a pass through so that worried me. Plus I didn't hear a death moan...but he'd have to be within 20 yards for me to hear that!
I waited a 1/2 hour to get down and retrieve my trail camera card. Getting back in the stand, I viewed the pictures of him coming in. There were three of them but when he turned toward the barrel, it was so fast that no pictures were recorded of the shot moment.
Looking at the rest of my trail camera card, there were multiple pictures of some other Big Bears on the bait. It seems that the boars were checking the bait sites more for sows in heat rather than food. I decided to slip out and not disturb any other bears...Doc
Here he is on trail camera just before my shot. I never reset my date and time from deer season sorry...

Here's why I decided to leave the bait undisturbed. None of these were the bear I had just shot bear. Look at the size of those Bear Butts! They completely obscure that 55 gallon barrel.

Oh man it's hard to read this stuff! Sounds like a great time had once again in the wilds of Quebec.
Great stories so far, but I know there is more to come. Out with it boys! :readit:

When I stop getting excited about the animals I take I will know it is time to hang up my bow . Hope it never happens . I consider it my priviledge to be there and really apreciate everyone who was in camp this past week .Tom has no equal and Paul took over Bowdocs job in fine style . By the way BD it was the little red ones and they do work ,you don't need them , missed you . Every day was exciting , helping Tom ,Jeff and Bill find Jeff's bear was worth the trip alone . Bill and Darryl had some tough luck but enjoyed themselves all the same .The trip home with Mike was an adventure in itself , but that's another story . I'll give some of the other guys some time , Fred
Fred,Congrats on a fine bear!!!
Great job again Fred! Thanks for letting me help skin your bear. Good times!!
-Bill
Great Googley Moogley!
Them's some big barr's, Jeff!
With bears like that in the area, you can see why I wasn't in a hurry to fill my tag. Oh that's right I didn't fil it! Ha! Ha! I had a very excellent time!
Thanks BigEd and Bill it's guys like you that make BQ special , everyone pitches in and helps others . I was wore out and appreciated your help more than I let on . Now we have to share a camp again so I can return the favor . Thanks Marty for posting pic of my bear as I may talk fast but I am slow as heck on this computer . 2 finger typing takes time but the fact that it's called "hunt and peck " makes it alright by me . Brandan had said he wasn't sure if he would fit in , well the attitude everyone brought along with them made for a perfect fit . I figure that when I get old I don't want to think of all the jobs I've done or sit around and count all the money I saved by not going on these hunts . heck we ain't standing in line waiting for donuts ! This is life ! God created the outdoors to enjoy and I don't want to dissapoint him by not taking time to appreciate them . You can't go wrong with Bearquest , Solana Ranch , The Piggigs or other hunts with Tradgangers . You will meet the greatest people and have the best times . If your sitting on a fence thinking about going on any hunt or standing on the sidelines watching I can only hope you make the right choice , you will have to live with it . My thoughts , Fred
With out a doubt the best hunting camp I've ever shared. It was great hunt with good action. A laugh a minute with good food and good folks thrown in.
Let me know Fred when your headen that way again the ride with your "what's in your pockets" storys I'm still laughing at.
I wish I could post some of these game cam pics. You'd get to see the bucket head I missed out on!!
I wish I had more time in life to go on more of these Trad Gang adventures. They truely are the best!
As I stated earlier, I had one Lucky 24 hours.
1) Shot a very big bear in fact it would be the biggest bear ever shot in Tom's camp over the past 21 years!
2) There was no blood trail. Bill Kissner & Susie, Fred, Tom, I hiked to the top of a mountain as Suzie was was on bear trails but couldn't key into my bear. Tom made a last minute detour as Fred & I were headed back to get Bill at the bait sight. He stumbled upon him. He had gone about 150 yards. Thanks guys :bigsmyl: He got a great kick out of cleaning the bones better than me...but I got a lot of free work from him!
Pierre & I showing off each other cleaned bear shoulders :)

Last post on Mr Bigger...than last year's Mr Big
This was a very emotional hunt for me. This was the first time I took my father with me after he passed away. He was my Best friend & hunting partner. Even when he couldn't hunt in this late 80's, he would wait for us to get out of the woods just to be part of the hunt. I had a few of his ashes put aside so I could share my hunts and have his help in scouting.
Who knows, he may have even whispered in Tom's ear the location of Mr Bigger's final resting area ;)
Now I take a few of his ashes in a leather pouch and leave them with the Spirit of my fallen prey...Doc

Great story Doc!
Jeff, I think your Dad talked to Marty while he was sitting that stand afterr you killed your bear. I think your Dad told Marty to go sit across the road for the last night's hunt!
Congrats to all of you. Doc your becoming quite the bear slayer, congrats on your monster!
HELL YEAH this is great guys thanks for taking us along bd
I was okay with missing this year until I started to read this thread! Great bear Fred! Great bear, Jeff! Congratulations Tom. Wish I coulda been there. Grant
Guess it's my turn. First and foremost, I wanna say what a great group of guys to spend the week with- no phones-no tv, so we had to talk to each other. Kinda like when a hurricane hits at home- except cooler temps. I was actually cold the first couple of nights. Brandon is right-sleeping in the same room with Mike Mitten was like being in a bear's den with a Tippit size bear-he's a world class snorer! Brandon actually pitched a tent and moved out! Speaking of which- Barry and Miami George can all hold their own in that catagory too! I had to put in 2 sets of those foam ear plugs per ear!
I went up to Maine with Barry a day early and spent the night in Ogunquit Maine with he and his wife's family. They took me to lunch on Friday and I sat in George Bush Sr.'s favorite chair in a place called Barnacle Billy's ( you can't hide money!). That's as close to him as I'll ever get! I didn't feel special or anything like Barry said I would. Nobody even noticed me.
We drove to Tippit's house for a departure at 8:30 at night. I hadn't been up all night since my prom in 1974, but I'm sworn to secrecy about that. Man rule ya know.
I rode with George( not Bush) and he drove almost the entire way- it was impressive. I learned all about him but again- man rule. I will share that he made an apple cobbler that I christened "cuban cobbler" and I saw Barry licking the pot clean when he thought no one was looking.
I also learned about a bowhunting group from Conneticut called the Langer Cult- it's main follower was a guy named Wapiti Mike who reminds me of that comedian named Bobcat or something- he definitely drank the Langer Grape juice at some point! He told off color jokes that made me blush- can't tell you them though- remember-man rule.
Gonna sign off now and leave you hangin like Guru is famous for doing. Ha!!
The famous Bush table!

Barry and Susan were happy to see me!
Those are some great looking bears guys. Congrats to all!!!
I said earlier that Mr Bigger had a limp. Kinda like Matt's Stubby bear of a couple of years ago, Mr Bigger may have been caught in a snare too. But it sure didn't keep him from being a Boss Bear...Doc

thats a trip Doc whats the plan for his hide ? bd
So we drove all night and arrived at camp like noonish on Saturday. Barry said we are not gonna hunt-that is until he saw others getting ready to go out. I figured, what the heck- we came a long way let's go anyway. Big mistake. I was so tired in the stand- which by the way was 6 feet of the ground-maybe 5 yards from the bait! Never saw anything like it! If I hadn't drawn my stand from the hat-I woulda thought it was a joke on me! By the way- I drew a stand called the "Deli" which was less than 2 miles from Wensel's bait as the crow flies and the bear walks. It meant that Barry and I could ride together all week to the stands-pretty cool for him! Anyway- I had to cinch my safety belt around my chest cause I could feel the sleep setting in! I actually woke up 3 different times sound asleep and dreaming. Not good. I happened to peak behind myself on one of my conscious moments and saw a pretty good bear sitting on his haunches and checking the wind only about 15 yards away. He took his sweet time coming in to the donuts but eventually he laid down 3 yards away like Biggie at a Hot Krispy Kreme Donut sign! I judged him to be about 200lbs right off the bat! Lord knows why, but I passed him. I remember thinking- this is gonna be easy-let see what else is around it's only the first night. He sprang to his feet after a few minutes and ran outta there. A few minutes later here came another one a little smaller and all rubbed out, so I enjoyed the show for a few minutes before it did the same thiing. These were serious close encounters- nothing over 5 yards.
Here's the first bait where I had 2 bears the first evening.
Gatekeeper took a picture the next day of me in the stand and Barry sweetening the pot. that's close!

Oh my Marty, you definitely missed your calling! Some of the funniest writing I've ever read! :biglaugh:
Is Uncle B eating or baiting?
Marty, I was emailing back and forth last night with U.Barry, I told him how much we enjoyed seeing you again, meeting Mike and Brandan and sharing another camp. Remembering Florida, Texas, Georgia, Maine and now Quebec. We need to do this more than every 5 years or so, though.
Congrats again on a fine bear in the final hour!
Marty McMahon the LEGEND lives on...
Guru- Barry is doing the ole' 0ne for you-one for me routine with the chocolate icing or whatever that stuff was! If baiting Barry was legal- he'd be easy to kill- just stake out the closest Chinese Buffet around him and you'll get him the first night. I once witnessed a Chinese Waiter cut him off like a drunk that had too many- u go way- u bad for business- u bad man- u berry bad man.( Or was it Barry bad man?)
Back to the hunt- So I figured this was gonna be a piece of cake- afterall every night( remember less than 2 miles away) Berry ( Barry) would say- passed 5-passed 6 - while I passed gas. I saw the good boar Sunday eveninng at 6 yards behind the stand-no shot there and NEVER saw another bear til Friday night. Not one! Wensel "I passed" would check my bait everyday til the end and it was never hit again all week. Can't figure that one out. Tom Phillips asked me what I was doing on stand- I told him it was none of his business. Ooops gotta go- Guru is on the phone telling me what to write!
Just bubbles Marty?
Here are the rest of the pics that I have. I ended up shooting more video than I did taking pictures.

Bear Quest IV was yet another great hunt. Thanks Tom Phillips for setting up the hunt, PV for preparing the great meals, Big Bill and Daryl for being such gentlemen, Doc, Brandan, and George for helping with my bear, Barry, Marty, and Mike M. for keeping us laughing, Tom Porter and Fred for all the skinning help, and Maddog Mike with our Connecticut crew for another awesome bowhunting adventure!
Great stories guys!!!! Keep them coming....been saving my pennies for next year.
love this crap....cant get enough!
Hey just curious- where's all the rest of you guys that were there? Am I still a thread killer?
Hi Marty
No you're not a thread killer. I'm trying to catch up on stuff at home. As soon as I feel like I have things somewhat under control I'll jump in and play along. For now here is a picture of a beggar. They seem to be everywhere.

Umm, do we really need to explain this Marty?
You pass gas and the bait goes stone cold?
Smart bears they got up there! :biglaugh:
You guys are KILLING ME! I spent 20 years (14 in row) "guiding" spring bear hunts in Canada before Ontario finally ended the spring hunts. I love this stuff, but due to too many irons in the fire haven't been in the Canadian bush for several years. All of your stories sound so familiar . . . except the one I'm hearing about Barry's bear. I've blood trailed over 200 bears in my time but have NEVER heard of a bruin like that!?! Good pucker pix Barry. My wife and I sat at on that deck overlooking the fishing boats when we ate at Barnacle Billys a few years ago. . . didn't know that chair belonged to George.
Tom no way that gnome is way better looking then UB bd
Whip- NOTHING- I mean NOTHING smells worse than rotten meat and fish entrails that Phillips was sending out with us. Nope- couldn't be me!
They finally felt sorry for me on Wednesday and I moved in to the Beaver Pond where Tidbit killed the big one- seemed odd to me until I saw pics of the other ones coming to his baits. So I sat there knowing that part of his Dad's ashes were nearby. I figured I had nothing to lose-so I started talking to the guy. He was quiet at first, but eventually he told me the bait was shot out and that I should move. I listened. I did like the name of the stand though-it was a long week away from home. I wasn't sure where I was gonna sit, but some events unfolded and I ended up where Gatekeeper had sat and not seen anything. I wasn't worried though- Tidbit's Dad was pullin for me! (Before anybody gets upset about talkin to his Dad- I got permission to do so. In fact Jeff kinda liked the idea!)
Here's Barry and Tom at my new bait-stand is in tree to the left. I think it was called Long Trail- I was fixin to rename it!
Marty...........tell the truth.
Did they have to walk in and out with you all week?
My tracks going in were real close together and going out- faaaar apart- you tell me?
Biggie- I didn't hunt much with Marty, but all of his pictures show his escorts. I know he isn't a very good fisherman. I put him on all kinds of fish, but all he caught was a seven inch Walleye and a 9-inch Cisco that he tried to pass off as another Walleye! :>)
This from the guy who dropped me off a half mile from my stand and picked me up a mile and a half away after dark thirty! How many fish did you catch?
OK let me ask you this;
Did you look back on your way out?
Mike, not sure how well your math is so if you need assistance counting fish that YOU caught let me know. One thing I do know is you suck as a fishing guide.
Biggie- so much so that I have a stiff neck this week!
Birddog has been unleashed!!!!
One thing is for sure, you have to have skin as thick as a bear's hide to go on a trip like this... AND it aint because of the black flies! :>)
All of the guys that went fishhing were full of good intentions!
I bet the guy that walked so far and carries such a "heavy burden", likes bowlegged women!
Sometime last century, I went to Alberta with the Wensel's and Biggie. I ended up shooting 2 bears with a combined weight of maybe 225 lb.-emphasis on maybe. You can imagine the grief I took from that! NEVER look at bears thru binoculars at 10 yds- they ALL look big. I didn't even bring em this trip. For years I was called "Small Bears" McMahon. So my goal this week was at least a 200 lb'er. Well now we have lots of bear on my Florida lease and I've gotten better at judgin them. Here is a trail camera of one from South Florida. He goes at least 200 lbs I'd say - wouldn't you?
Anyway, Paul the bowdoc replacement cook had moved into Long Trail with a ground blind and saw 2 good bears on the bait thursday evening. He was hunting a pop-up blind to the right of the tree stand. He immediately offered the stand to me for the last evening sit- what a guy!! Thanks again Paul! How nice was that!!!!!! It was gettin dark up there at about 9:15, needless to say I was getting anxious at 8pm as it had been 24 hours of stand sitting with not a sighting. I heard a bear grunting noise up the hill and thought-finally. Well this bear that I judged to be about 180 came grunting down the hill with every step. It's noises gave me the opportunity to stand up and get ready. The minute I saw it- I decided to shoot- nice coat and looked big. He went right to where Paul had sat the night before in the blind and sniffed every tree religiously- then even followed the trail out to make sure Paul had left!!! (Paul had come in with me to get his tripod that he had left on the ground)Obviously he couldn't count (like Mike on the fish) and came walkin back towards the barrel. He stopped short and looked dirctly into my eyes like oooops. He turned and started back up over the ridge but not before the Swamp Rooter sent one of Joey's trial Alaskan Broadheads thru his ribcage and out his shoulder! He ran behind the barrel and I heard him flopping like a mullet in the brush and moaning like -well use your imagination. The death run lasted about 4 seconds tops. It was 8:15. I got down at 8:30 walked over to the barrel and could see him lying in the brush 30 yds away- now that's a good feeling! Last hour-Last day. He weighed 201!Now Mike Mitten swears he filmed and passed this bear the night before and that it was grunting the whole time- he referred to it as the friendly bear. I'm glad he's more into filming than tag filling! So if he hadn't passed and Paul hadn't been gracious, and Tidbits Dad hadn't told me to leave- I wouldn't have gotten the bear- But I did. The End. For him.

Marty - You have to be the nicest human I ever met!
Just curious, how many bears were taken during this first week hunt? Sounds as if there were plenty of sightings and more than a little shooting going on. Figured bears would be easier to count than fish. :deadhorse:
No he's not...I am.
Bill, I think they took 9 bears.
Nice going Marty. Don
Bill, unfortunately we had a hard time finding the fish although we really didn't go out of our way. I can't speak for the Langer crew when they went fishing but I can speak for the people I fished with. Marty 2, me 3, and Mike 0. I only fished with Mike and Marty once but I went out several times by myself without not much luck so it appears I'm no better than Mike when it comes to finding fish. One day just Mike and I went a couple hours. I'd hate to even guestimate how many cast he made but it was a lot. We came back to camp that time skunked. There were some fella's outside our group fishing and they gave us the remains for bear bait so there are fish to be caught, just not where we were. Although we didn't catch much to speak of, Marty kept me busy laughing while busting Mike's chops. For me, that was bitter sweet since I'm usually on the receiving end. Thanks Marty.
Bears, I count 10. Tom L, Jeff, Ricky, George, Marty, Tom P., Fred, Bill L, Donovan, and me. Hope I didn't forget anyone.
congrats to all.
especially ...
pete
Birddog, The ct connection caught one fish the whole time we were there. Better "stick" to hunting I guess.
Although I was not able to close the deal this year, I had a great time and enjoyed the camp very much. Tom ran a great hunt and PV did an honorable job replacing Chef Bowdoc. My friend Daryl Harding was an outstanding traveling partner and was a joy to spend time with. I can't say enough good about all the fellas in camp as I have never spent time with a better bunch.
Martina, I was wondering who sharpened your bh's for you
Wow Guru- you are on the bandwagon too? Joey sent me those heads (presharpened) to do a test. They passed. He is working with Alaska Bowhunting supply- they were single bevel 2 blades. That'a the entire truth Smarty.
I think you need to leave it at that? Don't you? New years Eve wasn't that long ago! I remember-do you?
:nono:
:bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
If I had to hunt with somebody elses sharpened heads, they would be Joeys. He helped me alot with my sharpening woes. Marty, I bet you got enough dirt on these guys to get a congressional hearing going. Don
Man rule- unless it's broken against me!
You kids need a moment????
:deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse: :deadhorse:

Marty,
My dad said he enjoyed the conversation with you...but he couldn't figure out what the odor was coming from the stand  He didn't figure you'd see anymore bears there that's why he sent you on your way  Doc
This is comedy,,, Thanks guys,
Thank God Mitten's "friendly" bear must not have been able to smell. Musta been the Cuban Cobbler.
Marty- That bear was very vocal, but I think I had the audio turned down or off for some reason. I only looked at a little of it on playback. I should be able to get the footage to you sometime, just not right now. Gene is coming to work on narrations and editing this weekend. Mike
Thanks for the laugh guys. Sounds like another good hunt.
I think week 2 guys may have had a bit a quake yesterday I saw on the news a 5. whatever in Que'bec sounds like added fun to an already fun hunt bd
10 bears plus Barry's. That ain't bad considering the circumstances. From the sound of things you didn't sleep all week. What a way to spend a week. Bear huntin with friends. It don't get better than that.
Well my adventure started on the 9th when I pointed the truck north and headed out of the balmy flat lands of Miami. I took my time getting to Tippit's on Friday morning with a couple of stops along the way one of which was Cabela's in Connecticut. Once I got to Jeff's I was met by his wife Molly who was just coming in from a ride on her horse. For the next hour I learned more about horses than I have over the last 45 years (lots of grooming involved). I finally met Jeff when he returned from the airport with Tom Porter. The rest of the day quickly turned into a blur as we shot some arrows, toured Jeff's expansive bow collection, had dinner, and loaded up for the overnight ride to La Tuque. We drew straws and I ended up with Marty for the ride up...it's a good thing he talks in his sleep cause it's the only thing that kept me awake for the 10 hour ride.
Once settled at camp we got to draw for our stand location, I drew the Grouper. Being from Florida I thought it appropriate. The groups broke up and we set out to get familiar with the stands and re-bait them. The Saturday afternoon hunt was out of the question for me, being up for 36 hours was just too much. Sunday was a different story, refreshed I headed out with Paul V. to bait and begin my schooling for bear hunting. I thought that living in South Florida and spending quit a bit of time tossing out chum would give me an edge with the bait stench, but nothing can prepare you for the smell of rotting fish sealed in a bucket full of water and left to ferment in the sun...insert gag reflex here.
Sunday afternoon came and I got my gear together and headed to the Grouper. At first I was a bit apprehensive walking in thinking that every shadow held a bear waiting to pounce, I guess it wasn't a good idea to have seen THE EDGE just before leaving Miami. Once I got to the stand I settled in and began to enjoy the sights and smells, well maybe not the smells. The squirrels kept me entertained for most of the afternoon as each jockeyed for position in the bait barrel playing their version of King of the Hill. About 7:00pm I was broken out of a squirrel induced trance by sticks breaking to my left. When I looked over my right shoulder I could see a bear coming in about 25 yards out. The nerves kicked in and I did my best to relax. The bear came right over to my stand and stood just 6 feet below me looking straight up at me. Not knowing what to expect I kept the bear in my peripheral vision. It stared for what seemed to be a long time and then it started to head behind my stand. By this time I had relaxed a bit when it turned around and pretended to head towards the bait. I say pretended cause I think it was testing me to see if I'd move. Every few steps it would jerk its head around to try and catch me moving. Half way to the bait it headed off to the left away from the barrel and I thought "that's it I blew it", but then it stopped did the head jerk to look back at me and I guess it was satisfied that I wasn't anything to worry about cause it headed straight to the barrel.
I've been trying to recall what happened after this point and I can't remember. I can't remember if I was sitting or standing, I don't remember lifting my bow, I don't remember pulling on the string, and I definetly don't remember letting go. (I think Marty said I had gone on autopilot). The bear's growl brought me back to what had just happened. I saw my arrow buried to the fletch in the bear as it bolted to the right. It ran no more than 10 yards bounced into a sapling then another then it just fell to the ground and let out its death moan. It took me a few minutes to gather myself and I kept asking myself if the bear was done. After about 15 minutes I decide to get down and check. Sure enough it was down for good. All this played out in a matter of 15-20 minutes. Not the biggest bear, but I was extremely happy and excited my first big game kill with a trad bow and my first bear.
Now the story doesn't quite end there. I dragged the bear to my truck tied it down and headed for camp. I had to go about 9 miles on the rough main road that about another 5-6 miles on the rougher camp road before I made it back to camp. When I got to camp Paul and Tom were in the cabin and were surprised to see me back so early, I eagerly let them know that I had gotten one, but when we headed to the back of the truck imagine my surprise when the bear was not there. Wish I had a picture of the look on my face! Apparently in my haste I didn't secure the bear as well as I should have and it decided to exit the vehicle somewhere between the stand and camp. Luckily we found the bear waiting for us about 4 miles from camp. Here it is...

What I learned about bear hunting and TradGang:
• You can take a group of people from different walks of life and everyone can get along
• You don't know that you've been bitten by black flies until it's too late.
• The french word for ice is glace
• Marty is quick with a reply
• Barry is a great story teller
• Mike O can tell a joke and he has a great selection of bumper stickers
• Tom can run a camp
• Don't shoot the first bear that comes out cause then you end up looking at Brandon for the rest of the week.
• The most important tidbit of info Paul gave me was that bears deflate like a balloon once they are pricked; boy did I learn that one.
I will definitely be back.
I gotta thank Brian Wessel for making a great bow and offering some great advice. I also have to thank Terry Barker OneShot-OneKill for helping me tune the bow by sending me a bunch of arrows to try out. Hope to see you out there next year Terry!
Well done George!!
Congrats George, cool story :clapper:
Bear Quest IV – Wow! To meet new and old friends and share hunting camp it really doesn't get any better. The camaraderie shared by all is awesome. Every evening is like Christmas...waiting for everyone to come in from their "sit" with stories to tell. What did you see? How many did you pass? Did it give you a shot?...Nothing..Tommorrow will be your day. Every evening there are the same questions and it never gets old. As each day passes you get to know the new friends a little better. Where they live, what their occupation is, are they married, how many children, how many grandkids. How many years have you been bow-hunting, who got you started shooting a bow. You have the quiet ones like Tom Porter and Brandon B. and the outgoing ones ready to bust your stones. Marty giving it to Uncle B. and Mike M., who give it right back. Sit back and listen you can see they are real companions. You have George talented with a Dutch oven, the cobbler speaks for itself. Mad dog Mike need I say anymore. Bill K. the oldest in camp wishing he had retired earlier because he likes hunting so much. Tippit a very talented person willing to share his knowledge in a very humble way. Fred G., I loved your story about the Indian... who is a person too. I enjoyed skinning your bear with you! Paul V., his name is so long that he starts writing it with his left hand and finishes it with his right. "Paul, how long does frozen Shepard's pie take to cook?" Darrly, I now truly know what a real gentleman is. Don V. we shared camp once more, thanks for the great conversation on the ride home. Jon, the new tires, were they worth it? Mad Dog owes you one!!! Tom-No-Neck, thanks for putting it all together and keeping a secret. I especially want to thank my three sons, Bill, Tom, and Rick for a Father's Day gift I will never forget. The surprise to see Ricky there was awesome. And to sit and film Ricky's 1st bow harvest, well it just doesn't get any better. It is truly not about inches or antlers.
Thanks Everyone!
George I'm glad you had a great time as did everyone else . great story and memories that will last a lifetime . How about that night with Brandan and Bill and the GPS ? Too much fun . Did you take notes on what Marty said in his sleep ? Maddog Mike kept me awake with wild stories until he got tired and turned the wheel over to me . when I was totally exhausted , and he then proceeded to fall fast asleep . Not sure but I think I slept too . And Dick you and your Conn. gang were awesome , I envy you being able to spend that kind of time with Family . I also noticed the other day the Bill has a few pics on Three Rivers Trophy room , congrats . Great times , Fred
Congrats George! Enjoyed the story and pic's...need to see up close pic's of the TT though. Hadn't seen it til now. Been saving my pennies for next years hunt. Can't wait to try the cuban cobbler....oh by the way...who got up every morning to make your coffee just how you like it? Did you make Freddie go just for that? LOL
I gotta quit reading this thread. The more I read it the more I think I didn't send those kids at St Judes enough for that hunt Tom so generously donated for next year. Anyway, I can't wait, hope I can hunt with at least some of this group, sounds like my kind of people. Congratulations to every one! Charles Suttles
Finally sat down and caught up on the BQ4 that I missed. Sounds like a great time and hope to join the gang again next year. Can't believe BowDoc (stay away from the 5 hour energy drink) did not make it and you had the hunt anyway. Good hunting all and congrats Tom P on putting together another great adventure.
just finished this thread. great job guys! looks a great time!!!!
Mr. Langer, I can only imagine what a special trip this was for you, what a surprise that must have been!
As one of your biggest "fans", I'm very happy for you :clapper:
Terry, Freddy wasn't around to make the special coffee, but Marty and I talked about how a shot would have come in handy. You don't need 5 hour energy when there is cuban coffee around. Planning for next year already.
George if your Cuban Coffe is half as good as your Cuban Cobbler- an ounce should keep a man up all day!!! Lookin forward to trying it- just what i need -to be hyped up from an external source!
 I wish I would have been there to see your face when you saw your bear was gone from the back of your truck. That would have been priceless!
Well, well, well.... For anyone who read Barry's book- this is a little payback!!!! He made my "Loser" status legendary- but this says it all now!!!! Don't mess with someone's Karma!

That's classic! :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Just rolled in from week two after a 16 hour all night drive. Plenty of bears down with more to go. The fires are still burning and access to four of the bait sites were lost for the week Monday morning. Great time. Took this little boar at the Grouper, they sure do look BIG from 8 feet. My first bear. Some pretty good stories to follow as the rest return home. Here's a pic and another one we'll just call "there's alot of gas, trust me"

Glad you made it home safe Mike, it took me 18 to get home. We got stuck at the border because of some Quebec holiday, took us about 2 hours to cross over. I will post some pictures soon.
yeahaw sounds like you guys had a great time too bd
Hey bowdoc, I was baiting the "Bull" all week with Bill Moran. Found out the hard way those trails back there aren't as wide as a Chevy Tahoe :)

Looks awesome Mike!! Congrats on the bear!!
Thanks Tim, I'm sure "Buck Jam" is going to be just as much fun. My wife just didn't understand. "You're going to drive 900 miles, by yourself, to go somewhere you've never been, to spend a week with a bunch of people you've never met before. I don't get it." My answer "Yup".
Now the biggest thing is to figure out how I can do it again next year
I am with ya man!! I would love to be able to make this trip one of these years.
Buck Jam is great but the success rate is a little lower!! :banghead:
all I can say is dang dang dang I sure wish I would not have missed this year however it will make next year just that much better......hey I'am already booked for both weeks next year bd
This thread has been great, congrats on your bears!, couldn't make it back to Quebec this year, have been the last two years with another outfitter, have been only bowhunter in camp both years, time to make a change, at least I have my money saved for next years Bear Quest, time to send an e-mail. Todd
I left camp yesterday, Killed my first bear on Sunday( camera broke or I would post pics, they are on the way)I just got a call from a couple of other hunters who left today and 3 more hit the ground last night bringing the total for week 2 up to 8 with one night left, and its almost Bear thirty.
David, "Hill Hunter", suffered from the dreaded "failed to communicate" with his camera card. Here's a few pic's of Dave and his bear. Since I was the "camera geek" running around camp I'm the guy with all the money shots. Super job Dave.

One tip for all you future Bear Quest guys. Like the old American Express commercial with Karl Malden says, "Don't leave home without it". Well I did and here it sits when I returned. Probably one of the most important things not to forget. An on the road cell phone conversation with David when he said "bug suit" made me say "ohh ohh", and a quick exit to a WalMart before I hit the border saved me. Looks like my son inlaw is getting a new ThermaCell for his birthday :)
Michael,
Sounds like you guys had a Great time...some how I knew that just might happen :D The bugs this year were quite mild...back in the days BTC (Before Therma Cell) you had to wear a head net, tape your sleeves to your gloves, and sew up any holes in your hunting clothes. Kids these days got it easy! Doc
remember what Vinnie looked like the night he killed his bear but forgot his therma cell headnet and bug spray in camp.Oh yeah he looked like the stay puff marshmellow man his face was huge the next morning from black fly bites bd

Who hunted the "blow down" stand the 2nd week? I hunted it the first week and had good action and passed up 5 different shot opportunities during the week in hope of finding a bear that would be closing in on Pope & Young . I think the best bear I was seeing was between 200 and 215 pounds but it did not seem to have all that big of a noggin.

Whats up guys i just got home long trip 1100 miles. Bob i will give you a call tonight and fill you in on the last day. I had a great time meeting all the guys and the hunting was good also. gonna go unpack and love momma up before i get put on the porch.
You mean this pink arrow?
Nah, those pink arrows arent man enought to scare any bears away ;-)
Chad, sounds good buddy, cant wait to hear from you.
Any word from the last evening of hunting on the 2nd week.
GOOD JOB on the bear PV and thanks again for the great meals and company!!!
That pink arrow looks like its at the moose tower stand. Good job PV you got redemtion.
By the end of the 2009 Bear Quest, Bear Quest III, I was exhausted from spending 52 hours in a treestand over a 6.5 day period. All of my muscles ached from trying to remain motionless for such a long period of time. To help alleviate the aches I rotated from seated positions to standing positions every ½ hour. This helped in the beginning but after a few days this began to loose its effect. I'm sure many on here have experienced days much like what I described and can attest to the struggle we as hunters go through to remain in the treestand, but it doesn't keep us from coming back for more. After awhile it becomes a challenge if not an obsession and in my case it made me determined. By spending so much time in the stand I missed out on a lot of the camp camaraderie, but I wanted a bear and that wasn't going to happen if I wasn't in my stand. Anyway, I left the Rothman camp last year a little disappointed and a little frustrated, but also determined to return the following year to Bear Quest IV to try again. It wasn't that I didn't see any bears or have opportunities to shoot. I set my goal for a 150# bear or bigger. Determined to stick to that goal, I left Canada empty handed, but filled with one more adventure to tuck under my belt and pictures to add to my memory book to remind me and to show others the adventure that I had.
It was like Déjà ve, one year later I found myself crawling out of bed at 03:00 in the morning after only three hours sleep from the night before to begin the marathon run to LaTuque, Quebec, Canada. A hunt that I had eagerly signed up for before leaving the Bear Quest camp in 2009. At the end of the morning's flight Tippit, who graciously offered to pick me up and transport me back to his home before we departed for Canada, greets me at the Boston airport. After a few last minute stops we arrive at his home where I meet Jeff's wife Molly and Trad Gang member George Galan AKA xroadshunter. After introductions and greetings we were off to the backyard for some traditional archery fun.

A short time later Paul Van Vaerenewyck (thank goodness for copy and paste I could never spell this last name on my own) AKA PV arrived and Jeff took us into his "man" area. All I can really say is that Jeff may have a problem. In a 10' x 10' (I'm guessing on the size) den there was traditional archery equipment everywhere. It was overwhelming there are bows, bows and more bows. You name it and I bet, whether he knows it or not, he's got it. I made the comment to Jeff "you must get one bow a week in the mail" Paul replied back with " you may want to refigure that timeline when you see the basement."
Not knowing what to expect and taking Paul's comments as over exaggeration, I followed my host and the rest of the gang down the wooden staircase leading to the basement. Now I don't remember the words that fell out of my mouth as I stood their like a slacked jawed mouth breather, but I'm sure they can't be recited on here without causing me problems.
The basement is unreal! It is a private museum. There is memorabilia and traditional archery history in every nook and cranny in the room. The upstairs room was either an overflow area or a staging area for stuff that is eventually going to be moved to the museum. There are bows on top of bows, arrows, quivers, mounts, hats, pictures, magazines, books, sheds, strings, flyrods and God knows what else. Years and years of history in one small area, there was too much to take in at once. It was fascinating! I found myself walking from one end of the room into another room and then back to where I started. I followed this path over and over and saw something different with each pass. I kid you not, HIS BASEMENT IS OVER THE TOP AND OVER WELMING! Jeff, thank you so much for showing me your private collection and allowing me to share the photos with the rest of the gang. Like most photos, they don't do the actual room justice. The camera, unfortunately, just can't pickup the detail and depth of all of his collection, all I can do is stress how fantastic it is.

Sounds like a great was had by all ! Jeff's basement is incredible.
Barry, just by looking I guessed the bow count at 700, but I'm know I didn't see them all.
Yeah...thanks,Jeff. You make us all look good. I can always point to you and say "see I'm not that bad!" :biglaugh:
For the most part the drive to La Tuque was uneventful and dark. My road companion was Paul. He is a great traveling companion and we traveled in style in his brand new, 4000 total miles on the odometer, still smells new, Toyota pickup. This truck will be broken in after bear camp for sure. The most excitement we had during the journey north was when we all were standing on the side of the road with our tally wackers hanging free taking a leak. 02:30 in the morning and we hadn't seen a car in miles, but guess who shows up. Canadian Highway Patrol and not just any CHP, but a female cop. To quote Barry "I had to cut it off in mid stream."

"Keep moving you can't park here" was all she said.

After getting somewhat settled in we all drew the stand that we would be hunting. I drew the Long Trail. I remembered this stand from last year and wasn't too excited about my pick. I like a stand that offers a little bit of a view and The Long Trail's views are limited. The foliage is so thick at this stand it doesn't allow the hunter to see very far into the timber. So the chances of seeing a bear prior to it entering the bait area is pretty slim. For me, confidence in the setup means a lot. The more confidence I have the more effort I'll give the hunt and the more time I'll put in the stand. Never the less, this was the stand I drew and I was going to make the best of it.

I didn't hunt the first night. The sandman was calling me and after 36 hours of no sleep I needed a couple of hours of shuteye and did exactly that.
The following, day we were on another bait run. My bear baiting partners were Marty and Barry. To say each trip out was interesting is an understatement. Marty was very interested in knowing as much as he could find out about me and was relentless with his questions. The only thing missing was a dark room and 100 watt bulb hanging over my head as he grilled me with each mile of the drive. Actually, I enjoyed every trip out. The stories that Barry told and the songs that Marty sang kept me chuckling the whole time.

The Long Trail turned out to be a bust for me and when the opportunity came up to draw another stand I was ready for it. My new stand would be the Glove....

Were any nice bears taken on the "Bird" stand during week TWO? I saw about 18 during week one, but I know Marty took one of them that moved over to his bait the last evening. Thanks, Mike
DISCLAIMER:
Gatekeeper is Exaggerating about my basement!!
I keep telling Molly I only have TWO BOWS! This is the same story my dad used to tell my mom when when she'd ask my dad when he'd come into the house from his woodworking shop...
"Victor how many Beers have you had??"
With red nose a glow, his standard answer was "Two!" Knowing that he couldn't get away with just saying One :help: Doc
Line from Molly over dinner: "Jeff told me that ALL you guys had a lot of bows-it was just a necessary part of being in the sport!" and Jeff's exclamation when hearing of Molly's fall down the stairs into that basement: "You might have broken a bow!" :biglaugh:
Wow, thanks for the pictures of the "Man Cave". I am showing my wife those pictures as it SSOOOO gets me off the hook on too many bows. Its all about perspective, isn't it?
Thanks Man!!!
I don't think Gatekeeper is exaggerating at all.I have been there, seen that and I think it is the truth. My buddies give me grief about having 20-30 bows and I just tell them about Jeff.
Jack
Awesome stuff guys. I enjoyed it all. If I still lived in VT I'd have to try and join in on these trips. Congrats to everyone.
How about it Tom,Larry,Jay,or bill give us a update on fridays hunt. hope yall got home safe.
Chad (Country)
That's no excuse Randy. Bowdoc flies right over the top of you on his way every year. I'm sure he could stop and pick you up ;)
Hey guys, we got home safe. I think L.D. & Mark were flying home today & Jay's probably still on the road, he was going to overnight in Albany with them.
Can't wait to hear how they did Friday afternoon.
The truck's unloaded, Momma's got the wash going on right now. Yogi's nicely trimmed up, packaged and in the freezer chest.
I'm waiting for my grandson so I can post a couple pics.
We've been on a couple camp hunts, but this one was the topper of them all. Tom makes it a super experience for everyone. After the first day it felt like we've known each other for years.
Great people all. It was a real pleasure to spend a week hunting with each and every one of you. You all (or y'all) made it a very special week for Greg & especially me.
Lord willin' & the creek don't rise we'll be back for BQ V.
Be back in a little bit with some pics to share.

Thanks again everyone!
Larry, it was a pleasure meeting you and greg this past week. I'm glad yall got a bear, out of everyone there i was hoping yall were fortunate enought to harvest a nice bear. I know how much it must have ment to both of you being able to share those memories with each other, I'm sure greg will never forget them. Keep in touch and i will hopefully see yall next year at Bear Quest V.
Chad Tomlin
Chad,
I can't put into words the emotion & feelings. Memories for a lifetime! I'm not real religious, but I am surely blessed.
I sincerely hope all you guys that hunt with your kids get to experience it some day too. That's something that can't be bought at any price!
We could almost feel you rootin' for us each time wel left for a stand. Again, a heartfelt thanks.
Larry & Greg
Larry & Greg,
Out of everyone in week 2, you had alot of people praying that you guys would get lucky. I was so pumped to hear that you finally did it. I wish I could have been there to hear the story, but with everything I have going on at home, I had to get out of there a little early. I hope that we can meet again someday, you were both great people.
Bob Brill
Awesome for all you fellas.I swore Id never kill another bear but you all got me scratching my head.Congrats to all. :clapper:
Hey Greg and Larry, great to hear you scored, I echo Chad and Bob's comments, it is great you got to share the hunt and the harvest, I wish you many more.
Larry and Greg are 2 of the best folks I've ever had the privilege to meet.
Always looked forward to seeing them every year at the JLMBH. Guess I might have to wait a couple years now, but I hope not.
So happy to see "your" success guys :clapper:
David, what day are you coming down to ATAR, i saw where your getting a room if you want your more than welcome to stay with us it will save you the cost of a room. I will call you sometime this week and fill you in.
Chad
Yea, give me a call, I will come down Thursday and leave Sat. afternoon, Lord willing (and work)
Larry, I can't tell you how happy I am for you and Greg. I really enjoyed the time we spent together in camp. You and I "turned the lights out" after good conversation each night. The "Grouper" was good to us. Still can't help but wonder what was back there at the "Bucket Brigade". That site was demolished each day we baited it. Loved all your pic's. If that Centaur ever needs a new home I know who I'll call. That shot of you and Greg by the lake is the topper.
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Congrats Larry & Greg! Very neat to see father and son combo. Just like last year, we were all rooting for Randy & Thomas Reeves! Doc
Larry, I'm glad it happened for you and Greg and the rest of 'us first timers'. Sorry about the delay in posting, but I came home to hear that my mother had some major health issues and is now in a nursing home. When I get that business all taken care of, I'll give 'my side of the story'. Larry, it was a pleasure chatting with you. Later.
Shick
Larry great to see you guys had a good time. Tell Greg I said congrats on the harvest.
Larry Greg I wish I could have been in camp its almost an electric feeling when someone gets a critter.Thats what traditional archery is about right there pass it on.It don't get any better any where any time.Outstanding read guys and looking forward to breaking bread with you next year bowdoc
Really happy to see everyone had fun! I think that's a given any time tradgangers get together! I am particularly pleased to see the first timers get theirs! The thrill never goes away boys! Congratulations to everyone!

Going off of memory, I think I put in 13 hours at the Long Trail and during that time I saw one small bear that approached the bait on the trail that I walked in on. I was in the stand leaning against the tree as the bear was coming in from behind. Being unaware of its presents I moved my foot and the bear spooked off the trail and into the timber blowing all the way...game over.
The Glove was a stand that I had only heard its name being said. I had never been to it or remember any stories about it. Tom told me it is the furthest stand to the north of our camp. The Glove had not been hunted so far because part of the road north of camp had been closed due to the fires burning 50 miles north of there.
After baiting the Black Label, Roller Coaster and 41 we (Paul, Darrel and I) turned off the main road into a secluded parking area that would lead us to The Glove. From this point on my pictures run a little thin. I didn't take any pictures of my stand setup or the area that surrounds The Glove.
The Glove got its name because a glove was found hanging in a tree next to the trail that leads to the crib. When we got to the crib we saw that the donuts had been hit a little and the meat was all cleaned out. Paul's reply was "the bears that are coming here are meat eaters." With the help of Paul and Darrel, the site is quickly baited, the stand was hung and the background cover was rearranged for me a left handed shooter and trail camera were set. I climbed into the stand, cleared out any obstacles that may interfere with my shot, visualize myself making a shot from different angles and admire the view from my new perch. Perfect! I had confidence in The Glove. With everything set we quickly exited and headed back to camp.
Around 4:15 I'm dropped off at that secluded parking area and wish my hunting partners good luck before we part ways. As I quietly walk down the narrow two track I hear the fading rumble of the gravel road as Paul's truck puts distance between us. Quickly the rumble is gone and the only sounds around me are those of nature. I leave the two track and pick up a newly made trail through chest high weeds. If I hadn't been shown this trail I would have never known it was there. The weedy trail is short and it leads me to a small dark opening into the spruce forest.
With awareness I cautiously peek through the darken doorway and then let the shadows consume me leaving the radiant warmth of the sun behind. The trail angled away from the forest's edge taking me deeper into the bear woods where shadows, tree trunks and deadfall control the landscape with a ceiling of spruce branches above that occasionally allows sunlight to slip through. Walking on the trail is like walking on foam. Centuries of decaying spruce trees and the needles they drop make up the padded forest floor that is carpeted in a thick layer of green and yellow green moss. Walking silently is easily done on the trail that reveals itself as depression on the forest floor. While walking can be silent a stumble or heavily placed footfall could send a vibrating thud that can easily be heard through the forest air and felt through the forest floor. So being aware of ones foot placement is still very essential.
After a hundred feet or so I see the crib ahead. I stopped and examined the crib from afar looking for a black form or any movement in the crib or in the forest around it. Confirming that the coast was clear I push forward continuing to scan the surrounding forest for any approaching bears or bears that may be lying down in the immediate area. Confident that I was alone I approach the end of the trail.
The trail I was on ended at the opening of the crib. The surrounding beauty of the forest is interrupted by the man made mess of the crib. This is the only downfall to spring time bear hunting and one must overlook this part of the hunt and the smells that accompany it and concentrate on the excitement of the task at hand. I looked around to see if any of the bait that was put out earlier in the day had been touched and saw that nothing was missing. Following the advice of Barry, I put out several small piles of bait outside of the crib when we came in to bait that morning. By doing this it offers the bears a variety of places to feed and get comfortable and offers me a variety of possible shot opportunities. The multiple bait piles also opens the area up for multiple bears to feed.
After a few minutes of trying to get organized, I finally was settled in. So there I sat. The view was exactly what I wanted. I positioned the stand so that the bait was to my right (NNE) and I faced west. To the south, my left, and to the west and northwest the vegetation grew low and dense, but the rest of the area around was open enough to allow me to see 50 or 60 yards into the timber. The bait site set on a small plateau that stretched out behind the crib to the northeast for several yards. From the plateau the terrain rose to the west and dropped off to the northeast and east where it connected into a live stream.
The temperature was pleasant, I wore a long sleeve shirt and knew by evening I would need a sweater to keep the cool air at bay. Somewhere to my north chaos was erupting. On our trip to my stand the distant views were shrouded behind a hazy curtain of blue smoke and the low areas were blanketed with what appeared to be an all day fog. As I set my stand fine partials of gray ash rained down on me and the smell of the smoldering wood filled my nose. The forest was burning somewhere in the distance and the refuse of its energy was being deposited around me.
Time ticked away. The wind was out of the west and blew my scent to the road. This was a good thing for hunting but hell for me. My stand was about 5.5' off the ground and about 10' away from a full bucket of brown fish chowder that hung about 10' above the ground. For those of you that have not experienced fish chowder, put some fish in a 5 gallon bucket, seal it closed and set it in the sun for a month. Then pop the lid off after a month and take a whiff. That's fish chowder. God-awful!
Around 5:45 sticks started breaking in the thick foliage to my left. After spending plenty of time listening to squirrels scurrying about I knew the sound I was hearing was bigger then a squirrel. With my heart racing, I stood, flattened the stand seat against the tree, got my bow in hand and turned on my camera. I pressed my back against the tree and peeked through the background cover leaning against my tree. I was ready. Slowly a brown muzzle came into view. BEAR! Remaining motionless I watched the bear's every move. My excitement level was over the top! My hearing was deafened by the pounding of my heart in my ears as I watched as the bear come into full view about 12 yards away. Sizing it up, I guessed it to be 130 – 150# with a perfect thick black coat. As far as I was concerned it was a shooter. The bear stood at the transition line between the thick growth foliage and the more open timber and then slowly lumbered forward towards the crib. At around eight yards away the bear glanced up at my tree and froze. Then ever so gingerly it lowered its head and slinked back the way it had come from and disappeared in the thick foliage. I remained poised and listened as the bear climbed the hill to my west and I caught glimpses of its broken form as it appeared sporadically through the timber until it eventually melded into the forest away from me. What a rush finally a bear sighting! This boasted my confidence the Glove stand even more. The rest of the night was quiet and I left The Glove under the darkness of night and excited for the next day's hunt.
Thanks everyone for the kind words & congrats.
Bowdoc, we're already workin' on a third generation trad bowhunter. My youngest grandson is into it in a biiig way. He texted my son about a dozen times while we were driving home from LaTuque. They're more like brothers than uncle & nephew. Greg takes him under his wing every chance he gets. When we got in he went through the camera . . . more questions than we could count. He's on the right road.
Hey Mike, we sure did turn the lights out all week didn't we? I really enjoyed speaking with you. You're right on about that sweeeet Centaur, if you ever decide to release it I'd sure like dibbs on it.
Dennis, a prayer & all best wishes for your mom. Hoping everything works out for her.
Curt, we'll share a camp or meet up again somewhere. Greg speaks about you alot. Enjoy the times you're having with Cade. Time flies & everything you're doing is building a concrete relationship that will endure forever.
LD, Mark & Jay are probably draggin' butt after all the traveling they had to do with airports & such. Sure hope at least one of them got to drop the string on a nice one.
Again, a big thanks to all from Greg & myself & a really huge thanks to Tom Phillips for putting this together.
Larry & Greg
The following day's camp routines were pretty much the same as the previous. After returning from the bait run I eagerly checked my game camera cards. The cards showed a bear was on the bait yesterday about one hour prior to my arrival. I told Tom Phillips, "I need to get out of here ASAP" and Tom graciously loaned me his truck.
A quickly change into my hunting clothes, filled my water bottles and grabbed a snack to get me through the afternoon until I got back to camp and then I was out the door. I left a bellowing cloud of dust behind me as I raced to my stand. Wait... let me rephrase that "Due to the dry conditions, the dust from the road rolled from under the vehicle as I carefully drove Tom's truck to The Glove." There that's' better.
I arrived at a quarter till three and slipped into the timber in the same way as the day before trying to be stealthy as I approached the crib. I carefully picked apart my surroundings to confirm that there were no bears and then scrabbled into my tree to begin the wait. Tick – tick – tick went my wristwatch. With every full sweep of the minute hand the shadows slowly move around on the forest floor without any sound or sightings of bear. With no activity I had plenty of time to think about the images from the trail cameras. The cameras showed bears had been in the area but none of the bait had been hit. "Why is that?" I wondered silently. I also realize that the ground squirrels were keeping their distance from the crib. I wondered if the fish scattered in front of the bait was keeping the animals away. The only thing attracted to the crib was an ever increasing swarm of flies. There I sat for almost seven lonely hours without so much as a snapping twig. The only sound was the constant drone of the flies on the scattered fish carcasses.
With the falling sun came a chill in the air and above me clouds were starting to take over the sky and from the clouds a light rain began to fall. As the darkness robbed my vision of the details around me, I conceded to forces working against the limited time I had left and climbed down to the ground and pointed the truck back towards camp. Two more days left and doubt was starting to creep into my thoughts.
Continued on page 55
Tom P that is some fine writing and I am anxiously awaiting the next installment. Good double clutch on the part about the truck belonging to the other Tom P. Could not stand the suspense so I cheated and looked at your MY PROFILE page and saw a trophy pic - Good Hunting!
Tippit, I told my lady friend Marsha that I though I had 20 or 30 bows - she burst out laughing. Guess I'm gonna have to work on my presentation.
Great story Tom, looking forward to the conclusion!
I will give you guys a brief break down on my trip but must go to work soon. Could have not asked to meet a a better group of guys during the week 2 group! Tom busted his rear-end to make sure we all had a good time and were comfortable and I appreciated that. I did not see alot of bears but my baits were being hit! Twice I bailed off a stand and the next guy who sat in my stand connected!! Ahhhh, such is life!! I now have a new found dissss-taste for Little Debbies, snack cakes, cup cakes or anyting sweet in a package! Unpacking 5 or 6 (may have been more) 50 gallon barrels into usable plastic bags was not for the faint hearted! I truly do not think I will ever eat a Little Debbie again!! :(
Larry Dix, thanks for dinner on Saturday nite, your are a stand up guy and I truly enjoyed your company! Jay thanks for driving and your friendship! Your vehile took a pounding and I appreciated it! As for me, I was lucky enough to work the water baits! God I love being on the water late in the evening without a ripple on the lake moving the boat from bait to bait! The haunting sound of the Loons will live long in my memory!! Got to go to work and will be back soon!
Great story so far Tom. I hunted the "Glove" 2 years ago, thanks for taking me back.
Keep her coming Tom!!!!!
Don't know if anyone told you but Tom P was able to go in and get your cameras even though the area was still closed.
Did anyone take a bear on the last night 2nd week????????????
Hey Mark, how about the haunting sound of the putt putt putt of the engine dying!?!? ahhhh hahahaha, that was the best! ROW, ROW, ROW!
Yes, Big Bill (AKA Sasquatch) took a 100lb sow on the last night. Larry, Jay, and I saw nothing but were really pumped for the last nites hunt! Listening to those bear pop there teeth when it was close to dark made that 100 yard walk down hill something to behold! I easied out quiet as I could expecting something to pop up at any moment and grab me from the darkness! Then the sound of a Loon eased my tension and as I made my way to the boat! Many memories for me on this trip!
Good to hear that Big Bill scored! He certainly has paid his dues, both on stand and helping out Tom with the baiting duties....GOOD JOB, Buddy!
Were you shootin' those telephone poles through that Schafer Cannon?
:clapper:
OK, OK, OK! ROW! ROW! ROW! and ROW some more! It's off to camp we go!!LOL!!
Ya'll just keep laughing at me!!!!
I manned up and somehow managed to get the boat back to port while Zack did his best immitation of Larry! He did nothing but cheer me on!!LOL!!
As for Bill's bow, he was using a new Schafer Longbow which was sweet! 71# at 31" draw! Heck I could even shoot the thing! Very nice bow!
All right Bill!! :archer: :clapper: :clapper: That's great news! He really deserved that bear.
He was in constant motion all week. Always had something to do.
He's definitely one of the camp corner stones for sure.
Sorry LD, Jay, & you, didn't get to take a shot Mark.
Headin' off to work . . . not near as nice as heading in to a stand.
Thanks for the update.
Later,
Larry
congrads Bill, Mark I can't help but envy you and Zach, that must have been such a nice peaceful ride across the lake without that noisy old moter. Look on the bright side at least when we are picking on you we are giving someone else a break, "Trust me" :goldtooth:
It was good meeting you, shoot straight.
Thanks for the update Mark.
Congrats Bill  :thumbsup
The bear story.....
First off I would like to thank all for a great 2 weeks. Reconnecting with old and making new hunting companions makes this trip special for me. Too many highlights and memories for a lifetime for this two fingered peckerer to post.
Although I've got to say the look on George's face was priceless.......
I hunted the longtrail for 6 nights seeing bears one night and hearing their displeasure at my ground blind a few others. The last night there were lake baits open. I'd baited them in years past but never hunted any. Zack dropped me off at the "cove" around 4pm. The stand was set up for a righty with a tree blocking any lefty shots. After moving the stand to another tree I settled in for a pleasant evening. It was my 18th bear stand this year and with the noise I made changing tree's I did'nt expect any action.
As a product tester for Team Tippet I had the third generation Tippet head on the rest of my "Nor'Easter" longbow. I had planned to use Jeff's 2nd generation head that I had taken my bear with on BQIII. It only seems to work in Quebec but that's another story......
At 8:15 a bear came in cautiously from my right. Took some time to settle down. He would snatch a bite and run off 20 yards or so and come back a few minutes later. He finally settled in and started to feed. I prepared for the 4 yd shot with a little mantra that keeps me from shooting to fast. "Savor the Moment"
Sometimes I even get all the way to the "T" in moment.
The bear traveled 20 yards and stopped did the "I don't know what happened" and tipped over. A few moans later it was finished. Less than 30 seconds from start to finish. As I thanked the bear and the creator I reflected on the long, long journey I have traveled to this place in my life. It's been one heck of a ride!!
After dragging out the bear, taking a few pic's I sat back and savored the evening as night fell.
Zack arrived at dark with a bear in the boat. His first!!!!
To say we where elated would be the understatement of the year. Could not have scripted a better scenario!!!
Way to go PV...looks like Team Tippit had pretty good success in the La Tuque bush. I talked to Tom on his ride home and it appears that my bear won the tippit knife.
Now I have to admit...I had an unfair advantage over week 2. I enlisted Daryl to root for Mr Bigger ;) Consequently the tippit knife belongs to Daryl. It's in the mail...Doc
What was the weight of your bear Paul? Did you guys collect money for the heaviest bear in camp? If who won the pot?
Knife couldn't be going to a better place Jeff!!
Tom
The pot was won by Chad"cracker" Tomlin.
I believe the weight was around 140#?
Bear had a great coat.It was 1/3 the weight of Tippets bear @ 109#. Going to be another couch throw as well as BBQ at the Poke and Hope next month.
Here is a picture of "BIG COUNTRY" on the way home with his bear! He was one happy camper!!
Now that's a great Pic! Nice going there Chad.
What is Zack's handle on TG?
I wish I could jump in that water right about NOW!
S.
Congrats to everyone on week 2 for getting bears and memories and a big " High Five " to Daryl for winning the Tippit knife ! I admire Daryl and Bill , both from Illinois , for their calm enthusiasm . Both rock solid , glad to have met them . And Paul , you stayed too calm all week , you knew something we didn,t ?
Now come on Tom and finish telling your story !
Fred
Fred that wasn't calm, it was exhaustion from trying to keep up with Tom "the energizer bunny" Phillips :)
PV- 8:15 last evening- sounds familiar! Way to go- good karma for giving me LongTrail my last day! You are a closer!
Way to go Paul. Congrat's on the bear.
Another great hunt, great guys to share camp with. Tom, as usual, did a great job again. Thanks to you and Bill for making the bait runs.
I started out this hunt with great expectaions. I knew there were some big bears there, and Tippet's performance again this year, just reaffirmed it. After drawing the Resurection last year, I knew that that stand would be hard to beat. When we met the week one guys in LaTuque, and Mike Mitten said he'd seen 18 bears, I was pumped! Low and behold, I drew the Bird. Man this was gonna be good! The first night I hunted, Sunday, I had a good bear come in about 3:30. He had great hair, I guessed about a 160ish bear. The week was still young and I knew I'd have to go some to even have a chance at getting close to Jeff's bear, so he walked. Then Monday came, bait had been hit, signs were looking good! Monday night, me and the squirrels had a wonderful time, for hours on end. What the heck, no bears? Tuesday night, same thing. Oh no, I'm thinking, I broke the Bird! Wednesday night, yeah baby, here we go. Had a smallish bear come in. Nice fur with two big white blazes on his chest. But he was reluctant to come to my side of the crib, and he was a little smaller than the first one, but it was a bear! Look out now, here they come. Little did I know, that was the last live bear that I'd see. So I guess I'll have to go down in the history of the Bear Quest as the guy who broke the Bird!
All in all, it was a fantastic time, with a bunch of great guys. Can't wait till next year. Look out Jeff, I'mm gunning for your record!
Congrats to all the guys who took bears home with them. It was a priviledge to be involved with the recoveries and great to see the first timers get their first bear.
Larry and Greg, man I was pulling for ya. Couldn't have been better. You two really have something special.
Big Bill, ya finally did it! Awesome!
Till next year fellas, we'll do it again!
LD
LD
Caddo,
Records are only meant to be broken. I'm hoping for someone to bring in a spring 400 pounder! Congrats to all the second week guys...Doc
LD,
Thanks for "totin" my bear out of the Quebec bush. I plan on returning the favor with your bear on Bear Quest V...Mike
Congratulations to you Paul and everyone that killed their bear. You did an outstanding job with the camp duties and we all appreciate it. Thanks for all your hard work.
Energizer Bunny! Thats the best description yet I've heard that describes Tom. He is a go getter!

Thursday, June 17th
The light rain had continued throughout the night, but the following morning camp was greeted by the bright warm rays of the rising sun. I was told the day's forecast was calling for warmer temperatures than we had experienced in the previous days. The rule of thumb that Paul recited was "when there's bugs there's bears" so with warmer temperatures plus the rain from the night before, we should have plenty of bugs.
After the bait run I again check the SD cards from my cameras. The bait at my stand had been hit at some point from the time that I left the previous night and the time we re-baited the area on this day. Two of the four piles I put out were gone but the bait in the crib looked untouched. I was hoping the camera caught the rascal with the sweet tooth.
Yep...sure enough the cameras showed two nice size bears had visited the area. Both looked to be in the 150# range. One had a beautiful thick black coat and the other had a hide like Charlie Brown's head. "Great" I said out loud. That's probably the bear I'll see. I didn't want to take back a bald bear. I knew the people back home would never let me live that down. We had missed the two bears captured by the camera by an hour. I again let Tom know that I would like to go out early again and he again offered me his truck.
By early afternoon I'm in the truck and starting to pull away. Tom say's "keep the rubber side down." Oops... how does he know? Later in the evening I was going to deploy a different tactic for this hunt. Tom set me up with everything I needed to do a honey burn. The honey pot, a one gallon coffee can, had a little bit of honey, bacon grease and vanilla in the can. There was just enough of the mixture to boil and then smolder letting the wind carry the aroma of the smoke through the forest.
I got to the entrance of the trail leading to The Glove around 3:00 and like the earlier hunts I slowly crept up the path towards the crib. When I was able to see the rusty barrel lying on its side in the crib, I stopped and began to dissect the forest around the crib. Something looked different. "Are the shadows playing tricks on me?" I quietly wondered within myself. "Is that a rock? I don't remember a rock being there." As I continued to silently question my eyes. I wanted to see a bear so bad that I believed I was starting to see everything dark as a bear, but this was different. A thick black bear coat is like nothing else in the forest. It is such a rich black, it seems to steal the light from everything around it. The way a black hole does in space. What I was staring at was a black of that quality. So there I stood, waiting to see if it might move and ever so slightly it did. BEAR!
With excitement my pulse quickens. As I maintain a fixed stare on the bear, I slowly lean my bow on the nearest tree and then begin to undo the buckles on my All-Day pack. Gently I release the hip buckle and then the sternum buckle and quietly free myself from the shoulder straps. Seeing that the bear hadn't moved from its original spot, I divert my eyes away to focus on setting the pack down without rattling the metal honey burn pot holder strapped to the pack. With that task behind me, I grasp my bow and nocked an arrow. The arrow on the string was tipped with the broadhead that had killed the pig I shot in Texas two weeks prior to this hunt and I was hoping for a repeat performance on this bear.
I checked the feather tied to the tip of my bow and it showed that I had the wind in my favor. With that knowledge I advanced up the trail to the crib and as I changed locations so did the bear. This was the first good look I had at it and I estimated the bear weighed around 120 130#. If given a shot opportunity, I was going to take it. Unaware of my presents, the bear moseyed into the crib. I couldn't believe my luck! The bear was in the crib only a few yards away, eight yards at the most. The only thing that separated us was some scraggly brush. "WOW IS THIS REALLY GOING TO HAPPEN?" I screamed inside my head. Without a care the bear walks up to the base of the tree I had been hunting from, puts his nose to the ground and then looked up at my stand. Knowing that I wasn't in the stand, he turned and casually walked to the trailhead of the trail I was on. Had the bear offered me a quartering away shot at any point while it was in the crib I would have shot, but as it happened all of the bears movements kept it quartering to me or facing me head on.
As the bear neared the trailhead I let my eyes dart around looking for a place where I could step off the trail to keep from being seen. There was no place I could go and be quiet about getting there. I was in a pickle. Moving would alert the bear of my presents whether I was quiet about it or not. It was too close for me to reposition myself. So staying put was my best option. My mind was running through scenarios as I tried to figure out the best way to close this deal. All I needed from the bear was for it to walk past the trailhead. If it does that I will shoot as soon as its front leg swings forward. With my bow raised, I stood ready to shoot. The bear's head appears from behind the scraggly brush and then its neck and then the shoulders. A few more feet and I'll launch the arrow. My heart was racing and I could feel my pounding pulse in my neck and ears. Something was going to have to give or I was going to explode.
At six yards the bear stands quartering towards me and it makes the move I was hoping it wouldn't make, it turns to me and starts walking down the trail towards me. **** NOW WHAT? In situations like this there are no "phone a friend" opportunities this is a pick an option and go with it moment. The only shot I had was a headshot or between the shoulder blade shot. Neither of them appeals to me but I was running short of options, time and more importantly real estate. Even though the situation was a little tense I was dumb founded that the bear hadn't seen me yet. "Damn man I'm standing right in front of you!" I was thinking to myself. At four yards...yes 4 yds I load the arrow with the force of the bowstring and prepare to shoot if things get ugly. With the drawing of the bow, the bear looks up at me with a (can you believe this) surprised look on its face and in a blur it blows, whirls around and disappears into the forest. "Damn" I whispered, "that was worth the price of admission!" Taking a few moments to regain my legs, I went back retrieved gear and head to the treestand to start my evening hunt...
Great reading Tom!!
Great job Tom! I know how it ends and I'm still sitting on the edge of my chair. UB
That's cause your chair isn't big enough. :biglaugh:
Tom your story telling is excellent! Are you wearing THE hat while writing?
Wow :scared: :clapper:
More good stuff Tom - is it the hat? Hey Whip, do you stock bowler hats?
Would this work?
Comes in brown too :scared:
Wow, everytime I walked into the stand I was hoping to be able to put a stalk on a bear that was standing there... not so much now after reading that! Great story!
I'm really enjoying this Tom!
Great job, guys! Enjoyed the stories and pictures!
What a story Tom! Keep it coming.
Great story telling. The young ones on this site reading that should be inspired. The best way of recruiting new hunters that I know of.
Keep up the good work, Tom!
Awesome, Tom! Great read, keep it coming!
Thanks everyone. :notworthy:
I have a little bit more to go with a great ending. I'll add more tomorrow morning with a few stills from a video and then the climax.
I added that last word for Martha.
Gatekeeper,
Great story tellin.I liked when you rolled into camp and I ask you "Any Action" and you said something like "Naw same thing as last night ONLY I have a Bloody Arrow " !!!!
"Martha" :bigsmyl: :jumper:
Gatekeeper, add a few commercial breaks to this story and you'll have 26 week TV series. Looking forward to the next episode.
Continued from page 55
The whole scenario of my close encounter lasted about 15 minutes from the time I spotted the bear until it blew out of sight. That was the most exciting thing that has ever happened to me while hunting. The coyote I shot in Utah will always remain very high on my list and the pig I shot a couple of weeks ago was definitely a hard earned hunt that I will always look back on with pride, but standing face to face with a wild bear at four yards just took the covenanted position as my number one all time most exciting hunting encounter! The only thing that can top it is a dead bear of my choosing by the end of this hunt.
I sat in my stand replaying the encounter over and over in my head. I was glowing with the excitement of being able to tell people about the experience I just had. The people back home will think I've lost my mind. If only they knew what they are missing.
The wind was fickle that evening. It blew from every direction, this maybe a good thing when I start the honey burn. The fish chowder was exceptionally rank because the rain had agitated the liquid enough to break the film of dead flies that float on top. So once again there I sat with rotting fish wafting into my nose and to add to the glory a cloud of bugs swarmed outside the protective bubble that the Thermacell provides with an occasional Kamikaze darting in just to piss me off. Yeah...if only the people back home knew what they were missing. If bugs are the key to bear activity, tonight should be the night for an explosion of bear sightings.
From the time I settle in the tree until 7:00 o'clock I saw nothing although the ground squirrels were more active. They still wouldn't come into the crib but there were four of the little rascals making their presents known at the bait piles scattered outside of the crib. At 7:00 I decided it was time to start the honey burn hoping the Sterno fuel would last until at least 8:30.
It didn't take long for the goo in the can to start bubbling and popping and then a steady stream of white smoke churned from the can's top. The smoke drifted with the sporadic wind currents in every direction. As the day grew later the wind began to settle on a constant direction and the smoke primarily drifted to the east. A full hour and fifteen minutes had passed when a black head finally peered over the plateau to the NNE about 50 yards away. Finally a bear!
This bear was very leery about coming to the bait. It looked to be about the same size as the bear I stood in front of a few hours earlier. Slowly and cautiously it inched into one of the bait piles that was the furthest out, looking up at me several times before it snagged a bite to eat and then slinking away. After finishing that morsel it returned for another bite and repeated its exit strategy once again except this time it didn't go as far. The third time in must have been the charm. The bear continued to glance up at me on occasion, but its level of boldness must have jumped a notch or two, because this time the bear stayed and felt comfortable enough to lie down and eat.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816272.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816272.JPG)
Like a glutton the bear laid in front of the pile of donuts raking the food into its mouth and licking the forest floor until the pile was depleted. Not having its fill yet, the bear, which was feeling a lot more comfortable with its surroundings, moved to the next pile of food and began to feed.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816330.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816330.JPG)
Perfect this is exactly want I was wanting. Now all I needed was to wait for a quartering away shot opportunity.
After consuming about half of the second pile the bear turned to begin its exit stage right. I was amped up but I felt confident. I estimated the bear to be 12 yards away. I had my bow up and my fingers on the string and ready to bring my hand to anchor. Right before it turned to leave the bear gave me one last hard look
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816174.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816174.JPG)
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816208.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816208.JPG)
and then swung its body to the left. When it made the full 180 degree turn its left front leg (the leg nearest to me) was back.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816418.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816418.JPG)
As soon as it moved that leg forward I planned to shoot. S-W-I-N-G batter. As the left leg stretched out I drew and when it was planted on the ground I relaxed my string hand.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816485.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816485.JPG)
With the thud of the bow I instantly knew I blew the shot. **** I didn't pick a spot! My only chance to shoot and blew it by looking at the whole bear rather then concentrating on where I wanted the arrow to strike. Someone was either looking out for that bear or looking out for me. Either way, that bear was not meant for me.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816577.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816577.JPG)
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816611.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816611.JPG)
I shot high. Slowing the video down, I could see that the bear heard the arrow before the arrow made it to the bear. Just before the arrow passed over its back the bear loaded the muscles of its back legs squatted and launched itself into the forest.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816673.JPG) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277816673.JPG)

P-f-f-f-f-f..."you just blew the only shot you had you Dope!" I was mentally flogging myself for such a poor performance. I seem to repeat this mistake time and time again will I ever learn?...

Barry- did you get a bigger chair yet?
Great story Tom. Still a creepy avatar picture though- did you get that hat from Whip? Looks like you work at the cemetary.

Now on with the story Tom!
Where are you other guys that went-everybody post?
What were the weights of the bears?
Back from another great hunt with Tom what else can one say great hunt with great people and pleanty of bears. I saw a lot of bears thru out the week but just couldnt get a clean shot so I held out more for the perfect shot than a bigger bear then at 8:55 PM friday I got my chance after a nice bear worked around the bait site for about an hour in and out a smaller bear came in and finaly gave me a clean broadside shot and smack!!!!! my first bear laid 25 yrds away not a big bear by any means but it sure was a trophy in my book. I met a lot of new freinds on this hunt and got to see some from last years Bear Quest it was just an awsome week cant wait till next year thanks to all you guys who make this such a great hunt.

Have really enjoyed this Bear Quest post. Good people, good bears and good times had by all. The "Gatekeeper" has us all on the edge of our seats. Does he get another chance or does he go home empty handed. :dunno:
Bill, super job on your last minute bear. After all the hard work you put into making this hunt special for all of us you deserved it. Your baiting runs were beyond memorable, something I will never forget! Thumbs up

Continued from page 56
After reviewing the video I was glad I missed. Maybe it was the position of the camera but the arrow looked too far back in the footage. In the field the shot's windage looked good it was the elevation that was screwed, but in a time of such high excitement what actually happens and what your eye's and mind tells you may be different.
Anyway, the 130# bear zips back to where it had first appeared on the plateau. The place where it was confident danger didn't exist. At the edge of the plateau the bear milled around a bit, picked up a bone or something, carried it a few feet away and laid down like a dog with its prize. "Hmmm... maybe it's not over" I thought "Maybe I'll get another shot at this bear."
A few minutes later a larger bear tops the plateau coming from the east and passes within a few yards of the bear lying down. The new bear looked to be on a mission. It didn't glance at the 130# bear or pay it any attention. The larger bear kept its nose pointed west trotting across the plateau and was out of sight in the blink of an eye. "That was odd" I thought to myself.
Seconds later, another big bear summits the plateau with its nose to the ground following the same path as the bear that just hot footed itself to the west. BOAR! I whispered. The first bear through was a sow; he has been pestering her that's why she looked so determined in her passing. "This is a nice bear" I thought to myself. My eyes were glued to it as I watched it's every move and I began to try and will it to move to me.
As if the boar had hit a wall it stopped at the trail the 130# bear had run out on and sniffed around a bit and then like magic the boar turns in my direction and begins a slow torturous walk to me. The time was 8:20. Undoubtedly the bear had picked up the grease scent that other bears had tracked into the forest as they left the crib. There is grease or used cooking oil poured on the ground in front of the bait barrel for the sole purpose of making bears step in it and track the scent throughout the forest.
This bear has a different demeanor; it has a swagger to its walk. As if to say," I'm bad and I know I'm bad." I would not have wanted to encounter this bear at the trailhead as I had the smaller bear earlier in the day. I believe this bear may have stood his ground. He casually strolls the trail behind the crib picking up donut bits that I had thrown on the trail to help lure the bears in closer. With envy, I examined the bear from nose to tail. He is the one! I wanted this bear...BAD! His coat looked perfect and his ears looked small and set to the side of his head. I sized him up to be a 150 – 180# boar. Perfect! This was the bear I have been holding out for. "Now, please just give me one opportunity" I silently pleaded.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277856385.jpg) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277856385.jpg)
The closer he got the more detail I could see and when he was about 15 yards away I saw that he had a limp. His left front paw was turned upside down. He was walking on his wrist and the pads of his paw were pointed up. A handicapped bear... surely no one will give me grief about this.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277856481.jpg) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277856481.jpg)
By 8:40 he had F-I-N-A-L-L-Y closed the gap between us to about 10 yards. At that point I wasn't sure how much more of this I could take. Something was about to pop because I was so amped up! My muscles were cramping, my heart was beating so hard I could feel the blood pulsing through every major vain in my body, I was breathing as if I had run a marathon and my mouth was dry. God I would have loved to have a drink of water. My mouth was so dry. The bear had been quartering to me the whole time and remained that way when he lay down at the small bait pile 10 yards away stuffing his face.
He lay there, according to me video clips, for approximately 20 excruciating minutes. He looked up at me several times and seemed to look right through me. As if to say "What?"
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1277856637.jpg) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1277856637.jpg)
There was a half hour of shooting light left and the way he was moving I thought I was going to miss that window. At last, he finished the pile of bait and heaved his body off the ground. Still no shot as he stood with his head pointing right at me nine yards away. Come on go to the other bait pile I silently chanted "go, go go... come on go" and he did. He moved broadside about nine yards out but slightly quartering to me, still no shot. He stood two yards from the other bait pile and glanced at it and then turned away from it and walked closer to me. I was almost there! No matter how much I wanted this to happen I couldn't force it. I was on his time not mine so I had to play by his rules.
The smoldering honey pot got his attention and he moved closer to investigate it. The move to the honey pot was a quartering to me move and the investigation of the pot put him 6 yards away with his head pointed straight at me. This was intense! I'm reaching up to grab the preverbal brass ring but it is just out of reach. I'm tapping the brass ring with the tips of my fingers but I can't quite hook my finger around it. That's how close I was to shooting this bear.
Too close of an inspection brings heat to his nose and he backs up with a surprised look. His body language told me he had had enough of that as he pointed his muzzle to the easy pickings of the small bait pile. His turn puts him broadside to me for a brief moment and then his vitals pass behind the trunk of a 12" diameter tree. He comes around the other side of the tree and turns towards me once again to look at something else that caught his attention. Slightly quartering to me at eight yards and with the light fading I was about to come unglued, but I felt the moment of truth was about flash before me so I needed to stay sharp and I asked God to help me make a clean kill. Whatever the bear saw apparently didn't hold his attention for long. The scent of the donuts up wind was calling his name.
My buddy Chris Kinslow and I play a game where one of us draws our bow and the other decides when to shoot. It sounds simple, but at 20 or 25 seconds I begin to quiver holding back the weight of my 55 pound bow. This simple game came into play on the night of this hunt. While the bear stood quartering to me he turned his head to his right towards the pile of donuts. This in turn diverted his eyes away from me and I brought into play the game that Chris and I have played while practicing. I draw the string of my bow and hold its weight in my curled split fingered grip. The next move belongs to the bear. At times like these seconds seem like days. I stand solid with the middle finger of the glove anchored in the corner of my mouth. As long as he doesn't change his mind and turn back towards me, I'm golden.
Where the head goes the body must follow and the head is going to the bait. The bruin slowly swings the front half of his torso to the bait and in doing so he opens his whole left side up to me. I let my vision burn a hole to the leg on the opposite side of his body and when he lifted his left front leg to move it forward, I relaxed my string hand.
The string of the 56" pronghorn is ripped from the Martin glove and the 650 grain, 31.5" Carbon Express 250 arrow tipped with a Wensel Woodsman head is launched. The thud of the bow and the sound of the arrow smacking the bears hide were almost in unison because of his close proximity. With a single grunt and the eruption of rustling foliage on the forest floor, the boar tore away and headed for the hills. In a blur he was gone, crashing through the now muted colored understory of the timber. I watched his black silhouette against the lighter subdued background as he ran in a confused line, mowing over anything that stood in his way. The run was brief and the line turned into a tight left handed arc as he expended the last of his energy on his feet in one last attempt to escape, but it was all but over for him. I watched him collapse as he entered a shallow depression on the plateau behind the crib and saw the last movements of his legs as his muscles moved without the control of his brain and then he lay still about 30 yards from where I was standing.
This all transpired in a matter of seconds. I stood in the treestand shaking uncontrollably like a junky coming off of my adrenalin high. As the bear made his last dash into the shallow depression, I turned my video camera towards my face to record my reaction. My breathless voice quivered as I spoke into the camera trying to explain the events that had just taken place. I was visibly shaken after the shot. Recording my reaction is something I always try to do so I can relive the moment in the future. As I whispered (I don't know why I was whispering) to the camera the bear began to do a death moan, which I was expecting, but what I wasn't expecting was multiple death moans that lasted a full minute. Horrible, horrible absolutely HORRIBLE! It was one of the most haunting sounds I have ever heard. One moan, I could have handled two moans okay, but a full minute was torture! I wish I could show my reaction but the death moans are way to graphic to broadcast over the Internet.
As I whispered to the camera, my body was coming out of the adrenalin trance that it had been in for the last 30 minutes and I was beginning to feel the crash. I don't know what a heart attack feels like but I think I may have been damn close to having one. I winced as I talked and I doubled over and exclaimed "God I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack." How I didn't fall off the stand I'll never know. Anyway I did it. I DID IT! I killed my first bear and it was the bear I really wanted. I set my goal for a 150# bear and I shot one. To say I was very emotional is an understatement. Last year I spent 52 hours in a treestand and this year I spent 30. After 82 hours I finally have my trophy!
After my little video I crawled down and hurried over to put my hands on the long coarse hair of my prize. As I kneel by his side I thank our creator for the bears life and I pat the bear's side and thank the bear for his life. The Indians considered the bear to be a very powerful sprit creature and after spending time around them I can see why.
The last word in my video sums it up WOW!

One of my favorite moments of the week from a father and son team! Larry and Greg combined efforts to bring his bear home. Truly an experience to remember...good stuff!

Gatekeeper, Another tale extremely well told my friend! With each hunting tale you seem to tell them better and better! Congratulations on a fine animal! This is indeed your year for hunting. Great pictures as always. Good hunting, Ben
Does anyone else feel that Tom's writing is some of the best hunt story telling yet on this site? Dang, that is good stuff right there. Kudos on the hunt and extra special thanks for the telling Mr Gatekeeper.
I just might read it again.
BRAVO my friend! That was one of the best reflections on a great hunt I've read in a long time. The way you were milking it out made me wish I sent you my book one chapter at a time though. VERY good job Mr. Porter. When the big one started to come in I could hear you saying "I want THAT one Daddy" (private joke). Hugs.. Uncle Barry
Thanks for sharing! Really enjoyed your chapters Tom. Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you, Shaun!
   Damn I loved how you got that jab in, Barry!
Well Done Tom! Congrats on your bear!
Way to go Tom! Congrats!
WOW! is Right!
Wow for a great story Tom! Congratulations on a perfect ending to your hunt, and thanks so much for the effort you put in to share it all here. Incredible!
Great hunt Tom, and to all hunters, thanks for taking us along. :)
Tom,
Wonderfull story!! I think I was more on the edge of my chair reading this than when I shot Mr Bigger...well almost. Congrats again...Doc
:clapper: :clapper: :clapper: Tom!!
Great story telling!!
You've got a rare talent.I could hear your voice in the story. Definitely worth a second and perhaps a third read.
Nice job my friend! Dang, I didn't realize that Lamb had ask you to step in for him while his wrist is mending up. Does this qualify you for an degree from the Charlie Lamb school of storytelling? I was enjoying every minute of it as well and I've heard it all first hand.
Well done and a great looking bear! Can't wait to go with you, Ben, and Kevin next year. It should be a great time!
Tom, Great story!
You did good Tom! This is better than most hunt recounts I have read in any magazine! You might have a new additional career in writing should you choose to pursue it. Congratulations!
Congratulations to all of you Bear Questers...what great fun.
Tom...Super story telling my brother!!But then that's what I've come to expect from you. Good stories always come from the heart.
Anyone who's ever told a complete hunt story with pictures will appreciate the time it takes to put it all together to share with us here. Bravo!!
:clapper:
I look forward to seeing the video this fall.
Really an article for a magazine.
The descriptions of the sights, smells & emotions are as accurate as they can be without actually being there. It really puts you in on the hunt. One of the best accounts I've ever read.
Having been there & done it, I think it reflects what we all felt. Only a very few have the gift to put it into words like you did.
Great read & story Tom!
Larry

Exactly!! Awesome read!
Hated to see your story come to an end, well done Gatekeeper.
Congratulations to all you Bear Questers; I'll bet everyone had a good time. Tom and his crew do a heck of a job.
Congrats Tom. Job well done. Great story telling. You kept us on the edge of our seat. Thanks for sharing. :campfire:
WOW WOW WOW!!!! Great stuff guys, and congrats to all of you for a successful hunt in so many ways!
:campfire:
:bigsmyl:  :campfire:
I just read through all of this and want to congradulate all of you!
Great adventure!
Todd
Great job Tom. Congrats on your fist bear. Really enjoyed your company in camp!
-Bill
Tom you have a real talent with the pen, glad I was able to help you with the skinning.
Tom you are truly a gifted writer, thanks for bring out our feelings to the guys who could not be there! I could have not said it better with a ghost writer!
TomP my goal next year is to try and make you smile a little more while you are busting your assets making sure we all were happy! Thank again for all your hard work!
LarryD it was a true honor sharing camp with you. Not only were you funny but a ture Texan to boot. You made me feel guilty about not making pancakes but greatly enjoyed them when they hit your plate hot. Thanks for making me laugh! Next time Frenchy tries to run our little boat over we will have to show him how the guys in Texas/Ga handle a royal pain in the a@#$! Thanks again for dinner and sharing a room on Sat nite! Dang that kind of sounds funny!!LOL
Jay (AKA Mr.Gadget) I appreciated you driving and your friendship. You listened to me run my mouth for extended periods at 2:00am when I was suffering from Monster overload. I know I was the only guys setting up his bow at 4:00am while everyone else was sleeping in there trucks! I loved watching the sun come up at 3:45am and I obviously had to much caffeine in my system! Oh yea, when you did get out of bed in the morning you somehow managed to eat my pancakes! Thanks for your friendship!
Big Bill- you were a stand up guy who busted his butt for us all day long. I want to personally thank you for the all the guys in the second week group!! Bill was the one who made all the bait runs up with TomP and that added up to alot of time, energy, and work! Thanks again! I was very happy to see you get your bear on the last day of the hunt. What did we say when we left that evening? Bottom of the ninth, two outs, and some body needed to step up to the plate and hit a homer! Congrats!
PS: Be careful while riding with Bill in Canada, his next career is a Nascar driver!
Chad (Big Country)- Great guy who was more concerned about his buddy Zack getting a bear than himself. Dang good shot with a Widow and one hell of an accent to boot!! Big Country was the Man!! Look forward to chasing some elk with you in the future dude!
Zack-To this day I will not forget the night I picked you up in the boat and you were standing in knee deep water. Seemed Zack had a couple of big bears come in right at dark and one liked him so much that it followed him all the way down to the waters edge! I think there popping of teeth, woofing, and other excited bear sounds had poor Zack on the edge! Can you say the pucker factor was high and the tone of his voice was priceless when he jumped into the boat!
Congrats on your first bear Zack!
Bill (AKA Bobby Bouchie/Hollywood)! When I first met Bill he looked like a fish out of water!! With his body builder biceps and his rock star sunglasses he intiminated all us older men! Once in camp he quickly turned into one of the guys and I greatly enjoyed his humor. However on the third day of the hunt he quickly proved that his PITA themed arrows were not working! So he broke out his HOT PINK arrows and man did they do a job on a great bear. Congrat on your first bear dude! Oh ya, I want a re-match at HORSE archery!!!!! LOL!!
Greg and his father Larry! I do not think I could have asked to meet two nicer guys to break open 15,200 Little Debbies with! After three hours of chocolate covered fingers I was glad your Dad was there to keep us laughing! I was also glad to see the two of you team up on a great bear toward the end of our hunt! The look in your proud fathers eyes was priceless and it was one of the high-lights of my trip. Funny how the little things stick out in your mind later on!
Paul (the Cook)! Paul was a quiet guy who said little but when he talked people listened! Paul was one hell of a talented bowyer as he took his bear with a bow he made and a Tippet arrow head. Made one heck of a nice knife also! Sorry I stole your kitchen a few mornings but felt the need to do something being a morning person! For all you guys that did not make the second week trip, Paul gave me the responsibility of cooking three packs of bacon on the grill one morning! Turns out one grill worked great and the other one sucked. Well after cooking two packs of bacon on Tinfoil I had a heck of alot of bacon grease building up in the lower left section of the good grill. That was due to grill being unlevel but I have to blame it on something!! Soon grease was spilling over on the flames and we had one hell of a BIG grease fire! Thank god the fireman (Chad and Zack) came to the rescue and put the fire out! So much for that last pack of bacon!LOL!!! Sorry guys!
Mike (Yellow Dog) once again the guys you meet on Tradgang go out of there way to help someone they do not know. Mike was nice enough to provide me with a new fletching cover and we had never met before in person. I appreciated that! Not only was he was a dang good shot in Horse Archery but he also took a very nice bear! Look forward to meeting you again in the future!
Dennis-He was one of the nicer guys in camp who also took a great bear. He was also one of the guys that was a wealth of archery information! Later he dragged out one of the prettiest old 70's Bear Takedowns I had ever seen and it had a little Bowdoc work on the shelf and grip. Great shooting bow and he shot it well in Horse Archery! Another guy I look forward to sharing a camp with in the future!
Well it is late and I know I am leaving some of the guys out! Sorry as my old memory banks are running low but the fellowship was great! Good Nite everyone!
I always learn a lesson when I hunt with Barry Wensel- sometimes it's about hunting -sometimes not. Today's lesson was not. Upon arrival at the Lodge of the Bear, I learned that(no- we all learned) that our legend (loser) had forgotten his socks and underwear at his sister-in-laws house. The sad part of this is that I happen to be near his size even after losing weight so I offered up 3 pair to get him thru the week. I caught sight of him from behind during one of his runs to the outhouse and reminded him that he could and should keep the tightie whities. Well he doesn't listen well and today-all wrapped up in a nice package- he returned them to me in the mail- you guessed it- NOT WASHED!!!The mailman may never speak to me again.
Sorry, I know this isn't as good as Tom Porter's story, but I did the best I could with what I have.
Here's what killing the biggest bear in camp will do to a guy.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1278015149.jpg) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1278015149.jpg)
I'm starting to get a following.
(http://images.imagelinky.com/1278015209.jpg) (http://images.imagelinky.com/1278015209.jpg)
"Allen Badilion Trahurn"
Mike he even looks like James Caan !?!?
I'd be kinda worried if that was "following" me....don't stop to pick up any change..... :scared:
Great read Tom! Congrats on a great bear! I'm really happy for ya. You earned it.
Congrads to all that when up,looks fun.
Marty: I'll have you know those tightie whities WERE washed. It's just that some stains won't come out. Give them the sniff test if you don't believe me. Thanks again for the loan. Oh, and by the way... those socks you loaned me, you better wash them too because I have a very contagious foot fungus. XOXO Uncle Barry
Marty, I recommend passing on the sniff test and burning them all downwind! It might start a stampede though so pick the right area! :D
had forgotten his socks and undies at his sister in laws ? wow I'd like to hear more about what UB was doing naked at his sister in laws ? and where the heck was Gene ? geezs sounds like I really missed out on some great story telling this year UB bd
Well boys I hope everyone is unpacked.I just about have everything back in it place.I now have some hides to bring to Taxidermist and some Bear meat products to get made..... More to follow.

Thank you Mr Langer and Congrats to All,,
Has anyone got their pictures developed from hunt ?
Bill Langer- how was the Boo- Boo Stew?
How any of you Bear Questers are going to Denton Hill ?
You guys aren't really gonna eat that stuff are you????
Marty, you look like that Chuck Adams dude sitting 15 feet behind that Kudu.
The bear stew was great, a real hit on Independence Day!
Ricky did a fine job with his first bowkill.
Eat any of your's Marty?
Bill- not yet- Tom is having that smoked sausage made for me- lookin forward to it!
Biggie- you're just used to making ALL animals look small- we average sized guys don't fo that!
Wow, Marty has an avatar!!!! :clapper:
Lookin' good buddy!
That is not Marty in his Avatar, that must be one of the handsome PH's that was babysitting him !!!
Who's Marty? Was he one of those week one guys?
He was "THE Week One Guy " Calmly stayed the course and ridicule and pulled it out on the eleventh hour . He's right up there with Mike and Barry .
How's that Marty ?
Yeah- he was Tom's whippin boy during the first week.
Greyfox, I'm on your side the first sign of trouble!
Fred, that was one super bear you arrowed at the "Grouper". It was an honor to take a bear out of the same stand you sat in during week two :goldtooth:
Yellow Dog even though you beat me to Michigan I'm glad to have kept the seat warm for you . George was gracious to leave it for me .
Good deal Marty , Keep both eyes open !
Fred, sorry about the Michigan thing. That was a tough decision, hunt Michigan close to home with a bunch of fine Michigan Trad guys or pursue the Pike County hunt that you did last year. I made the right choice sticking with my bidding and locking in that St. Jude Michigan hunt. It'll be a great time hunting with that bunch in my "backyard".

I'll second that! Can you hear LOSER NO MORE?
Whoever said Marty was a LOSER ????
After he mmmmmmissed a booner in KS a few years ago, someone wrote it (loser) in ketchup on his omlete the next morning...can't remember if it was me, or Barry or Gene??????
Knowing you three, Big, you each wrote a couple letters!!!! You guys are HARSH :bigsmyl: :biglaugh:  :nono:
I know Marty is a LOSER in the USA,didn't think it hit Internationally yet !!
The whole painful and hysterical story is in Barry's latest book and if you haven't bought or read it-you should! All great stories in there!
Things are already in order for BEAR QUEST 5 2011'. Can't wait already !!!!

I'll be wearing mine proudly. Thanks Larry...Doc

Second Week Guys! My XL Cabelas MT-50 Rain Jacket did not make it back with me! Please check and see if any of you picked it up by mistake! Thanks!
What beautiful workmanship!
I will provide belts to go with the buckles if the 2 "largest bear shooters" want. Shoot me a p.m. with belt size, and I'll tap out.
Larry thanks again for the beautiful buckle. I will be wearing mine with PRIDE, and if you do it again for next years BQ I will be planing on winning my 2nd one, Ha. Ha. I'm looking for tippits record. This year I will be hunting with primative bow, cane arrows, stone points I can't wait.
That is a true work of art. I wish I had those skills.
