tap,tap,tap
Congrats again Izzy! What a great weekend!
Nice!! :clapper:
Well I didnt get my nap but Ill sleep good tonight.Didnt mean to Lamb this tale but I was worn out.
Now about the hunt! It almost started as a solo trip but Cuz got pardoned at the last second and thankfully made the trip with me.
This was the first time Ive ever been to South Carolina and to me the country is absolutley beautiful, especially once we got closer to Ray Rays pig joint.
After arrival we got aquainted with Ray and the boys from Michigan, Rick and Shawn Butler and their bud Greg. After a quick but in depth, enlightening HOGS 101 from Hog master Ray we set off for the 1st evenings hunt.Nothing but dillas and a pair of gobblers of which one must have had an 12" beard, very impressive.
Next morning after splitting off from the other hunters I saw 3 big sow and a mess of football pigies but after 5 minutes I felt a brreze on the back of my neck and they spooked from about 40 yards away.I tried to get around in front of the but got sidetracked by some beautiful, pink chert scrapers just sparkling away at me like someone put them there just for me.While I was busy collecting stone the hogs got past me but luckily I heard em and got after them again.
They seem to be in constant motion eating and rooting as they go along and althoug I followed them through a mud flat between a palmetto stand and standing water from 30 to 50 yards I couldnt close in without getting busted as it was pretty open.
Suddenly the red sow charged toward the standing water gruning and huffing at the until now unseen marbled boar that came out of the cypress swamp. The sows rounded up their little ones and marched em off down into the palmettos and then it was game on with the boar.He wa really enjoying his lunch which gave me an opportunity to get 2 big cypress trees between him and I and make a move on him.I could see him at times but man could I hear him rooting.I did a tiptoe through shin deep water and got to within 15 yards from him unnoticed. As soon as he quartered away my 46# Griffin was at full draw and a 570 grain footed hexpine with a 125 Eclipse was on its way.I hit him behind his last rib and got about 20 inches of penetraion all the way to his opposite shoulder. He took 2 steps and looked back at me when I gave him another tight behind the elbow, not as much penetration this time.
At the scond shot he ran about 10 yards to a deep spot and started staggering. Before I could shoot again he went down splashing for a few seconds until all was quiet. One of my favorite hunt of my life, everything luckily worked to my favor and although I still cant believe it went down like it did I remember every detail vividly. Thanks to my new cousin Ray from Woodstock GA and my old Cousin Ray from da Bronx, you boys helped me make lifelong memories and Ill be back real soon.Anybody thinking of heading to Rays do yourself a favor and make it happen. Pics to come as soon as momma helps Noah with his homework.
Sorry for my rambling and poor paragraph structur but Im still a little giddy.
COOL!!
Izzy,
Nice going. Thanks for replaying the hunt for us.
Way to go Izzy, that's pretty cool!!! Love to see more pics..... :archer:
David
Very cool. I can't wait to get to Ray's.

Good Job Izzy!!!!
Thanks for the story that is a great looking HOG!!
DD
ALRIGHT IZZY!!!! :clapper: Hopefully, Ray had just as good a hunt.I know Ray Hammond took good care of you guys, and fed you like you were a starving pigmey! :biglaugh:
Bill
Izzy. These South Carolina swamps are one of the last wild places on earth and truly are addicting. Did y'all hear any of those longbeards hammering?

Ray, Everything I know about hogs I could fit into one sentence. :o So why would you want a boar like that out of the gene pool? What causes the marbled or spotted pigs?
Congratulations!Sounds like you had a great hunt.Good for you.
Alright congrats buddy.
Good job sir! Thanks for sharing the hunt!
eexxeelleenntttt, would love to do that someday,,sooner the better...congrats sir thats a very neet looking pig.
That's a NICE boar Izzy! Congrats! Great story tellin too.
Sunny Hill, your right on about the addictiveness of those old growth swamps. The longbeards were blasting off yesterday morning but with so many different birds calling they kind of blended in.I saw a mess of pileted woodpeckers but I kept a close eye on them hoping to rediscover an ivory billed.Im am a richer man for having experienced such a pristine, somewhat intact habitat. If I never saw a pig all weekend I would have had a successful hunt.Took pics of a beautiful bobcat print in the mud, aradillos from inches of my boot, owls, saw wood ducks by the score and a mess of deer and turkey. One buck still had his headgear on him. After finding those artifacts my imagination really ran away and I wondered about the fellas that made em and what they were hunting the day they dropped them.A truly enchanting place and Im glad Ray and his people appreciate the value of such a place and nurture it as they do.
Photobucket fried my brain tonight but Ill try again tomorrow.I got some great pics.
Very cool looking hog!
We have the spanish strain of sus scrofa (swine) Kenneth.
They are either black, or a reddish brown.
Anything that has all that coloring in it is due to farm pigs that got away from their masters and mixed in with the true wild spanish hogs that have been here for 500 years roaming free.
We like the black ones and want to keep as much of the color out of our herd as we can- its nearly impossible since there are no fences and the pigs roam up and down the river as free as birds.
Ray, I think you should cull all the black and reds and specialise in them there "Marble" pigs. :biglaugh:
Nice pig Izzy
Awesome Iz....i couldnt be happier for ya bro.
I didn't know you went pig huntin!
That is one fine pig. Cant wait to see pics. The stone artifacts you found would be cool to see too.
:campfire:
congrats on a successful hunt...can't wait to get back to the swamp....

Ray, that's what I thought but wasn't sure. I know we had some pigs in WV that were a bunch of farm hogs that got washed down river during a flood in 85' and they survived and started showing up in the deer woods about 10yrs ago and most of them were spotted kinda like. Thanks for the education. I'll be in NC in a week so I'm gonna start trying to find a place to chase a few hogs soon before I get a job lined up and before I start using that GI Bill again.
Real nice sounding hunt and glad you made it happen - just like three years from now....we will chase some together and it will be great to meet you.
Jer
Way cool! Hoping to get into some pigs myself this year.
:bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl: :bigsmyl:
Nice stalk and nice kill Izz...looked like beautiful land to bowhunt, got anymore photos...
:readit:
Come on Izzy let's see the pics :banghead:
Congrats Izzy! :bigsmyl: I'm heading down to Rays in less than a month and I can't wait. Already losing sleep just thinking about the beauty of the hunt.
Awesome Izzy! Congratulations on a great shot and animal!
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/dscn1224.jpg)Whoooo hoooooo, I did it finally.Anyway this is my favorite pic of em all.The water in the background separates the mud flat that I stalked on him from small high spots in the swamp.I shot from about 15 yards behind where "Marbles" and I are in the pic and he died right about where he lays in pic.The pics dont do the swamp justice. No sign of human presence, birds calling non stop and the smell of swamp decay and call me crazy but I find the smell of swamp very pleasant.
Yup, that's a boar alright!
Are those the end of snapped arrows?
Yeah bud, glad you pointed that out I didnt notice em in the pic this is the first time Ive seen it blown up.The back arrow is just the footing after I pulled a long length of it out.
Good shootin' buddy! I like the muddy pic
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/pig%20hunt%202010/dscn1234.jpg)My two Rays, Hammond on the left Melendez on the right. Its good to have gullible hunting partners.I told them to pull the cart so I could take a pic from behind and then ran off into the swamp and hooked up in front of them all the way to the truck. And besides,my gloves were too slippery from all that mud to get a good hold on the cart.
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/pig%20hunt%202010/dscn1234.jpg)Heres camp.Rick and Shawn Butler, Ray way in the back and the funniest cat ever Doug Gilmore.By the way Doug we ran into Mother Green and The Piccolo player somewhere in N.C., nice folks. This is where the feasting takes place.Rennaisance Ray Hammond can cook better than yo mama, sharpen a broad head to scalpel like sharpness, tell you a real cool, funny story all at the same time. He can also reproduce the call of a barking spider so accurately that it lures more to the scene and before you know it camp is full of em.Or maybe they just come for those giant ribeyes that melt in your mouth, or the chicken and dumplings,or the hog sausage and spaghetti. All deliscious but youll work it off in the sawmp.
Wrong pic , sorry Im trying to get camp up.
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/February%202010/dscn1238.jpg)Thats better! This is camp and those smiles and laughter are a constant at Hog Heaven.
http://s122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/February%202010/?action=view¤t=dscn1208.jpg
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/February%202010/dscn1208.jpg)Would have loved to see the fella that left this print even though theyre protected on the property.Dont see them often up here.
Nice shooting Izzy, congrats on the big pig, can't wait for my trip to Ray's.
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/February%202010/dscn1209.jpg)And these fellas are everywhere and they dont concern themselves with anything but what theyre rooting for.If you look at the bottom left of pic thats my boot. This was my first of many, many dilla encounters. At first I thought everyone I heard rustling was a pig over the rise but after a while you get to tell the difference.I couldnt get myself to poke an arra through any of them but if any of you all got a (tasty recipe) I will next time.
Great hog, and great pictures.
Congratulations; couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Izz made a great first shot- entered just in front of the ham, as you can see, and traveled up through and cut the bottom out of the heart- second shot ended up being unnecessary, but like I always tell folks, if he's standing up, you better empty that quiver!
(http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/dscn1217.jpg)In this pic, if you look slightly left of center this is my boar "Marbles" but right before it was reduced to hams.I approached him from the right of pic.Aint that a beautiful place??? I miss it already and cant wait to get my boots muddied up in it again.
Thats the last of my pics, the others will either scare you or fill you with pitty for the mugs in em and my bald head might blind you with the glare.Everything about this trip was absolutely perfect, from the amount of game( I saw at least 20 hogs)to the new friends met in camp.Even the road trip to and from. We got so lucky on the way home that we saw an albino doe on Rte 13 and about 150 miles from home ran out of gas 20 feet from the gas pumps after a desolate stretch of road.Just a perfect trip.
See You All At The Shoots This
Spring And Summer,Izzy(El Guapo)
Awesome!
Great howg Buddy! :clapper:
Sounds like a very exciting hunt!!! Well worth the long drive!
  :clapper:

This critter fell to my Shrew at 7 yrds. Found out later you could get right up next to 'em.
Sunday morning I was making my way through these pines where I would stop and glass every few steps. As I eased along I suddenly heard something in the brush to my right and about 12 yards in front. As I started to croutch down and snatch an arrow from my quiver I had a good size boar materialize from a patch of cane with his rear end pointed in my direction. He stood there for maybe 5 seconds before easing around to my right and behind some rather thich brush. He let out a small snort as he moved behind the cane but never offered a clear broadside shot as I heard him moving off.
Thats a cool pic of those pines Rick, I never made it clear of teh swamp long enough to take a stroll through those pines.Congradulations on the dilla, nice shooting.
Congrats on the nice hog Izzy
Great pics and story, thanks for sharing ! Looks like a fun group of guys.
Here's Izzy enjoying Chicken & Dumplings after killing his Hog.
That fire pit was huge. No tv and no radio, we enjoyed campfires and starlit night skies in the evenings and a nip or two of some fine bourbon.
Rick, your kiling me with that picture.Miss it terribly already.
Great story and great pics...what fine hunt.
Izzy, I know exactly what you mean!
Just scarfed down those tenderloins. It was the finest pork Ive ever tasted, nothing like domestic pig.
Nice pig Izzy.... good warm-up for the turks here soon.
Did you grill??? I thought I smelled something good around the neighborhood.
Cool pics and story. Thanks Izzy.-Bill
I did grill brotha, you should have stopped in for a bite and a beer.
Good Job as well Rick.-Bill
Dang Izzy, you must really hate hogs! Last I heard you were thinking of going all the way to OZ to shoot them! :)
Congrats and thanks for sharing!
Man Izzy those patches look familiar. I'd bet my new bow that I stalked that pig at Ray's last year. Got within 40 yds of him and ran out of cover. All I could was wait and hope until the wind shifted and off he went. Congrats!!!!!
izzy glad to hear you didnt bounce it off of any rocks! great pig, now if you could just teach that cousin of yours to pick a spot. kevin
great job on hog.glad to hear you had a blast.going there april 9/10/11.gonna hunt turkeys and hogs.cant wait and thanks for the story..chris
Hey Izzy, Glad to see this up. That was one great hunt we had. Fine food, great friends, awesome experience, and unforgettable memories. I will get my pics up tomorrow or the next day. We are already palnning our next hunt down to Ray's Place. For those of you who have ever considered hunting hogs just do it. Ray Hammond is a fantastic guy. I learned a lot from him, Ray thank you for everything!
Thanks for sharing your pictures and story.
April can't get here soon enough. Hogs and turkeys oh my. :campfire:
Kevin, I gave Ray a sticker to put on the belly of his bow which reminds him to pick a spot but he didnt bring that bow, he has so many I dont think he even remembers which bow has it.He also said he couldnt concentrate because he expected you to come crashing through the woods at any minute looking for him and spook all the game!He had a lot of fun and brought home half of the hog anyway, thats how our tribe rolls. You and Pete and Matty should make the trip down, you can just tie your 120" longbow to the roof of your car and put flags on the end so other cars will notice it.
Doug,
The pleasure was all mine.
Really enjoyed meeting and sharing the camp with you guys.
Damn, I can't wait to get back there someday. Beautiful place and a camp host second to none.
Many thanks for sharing.....great pics and stories....and revied memories of my own seeing the camp and property pics.
Thanks again....and Congrats of course!!!
Wow. That is great stuff.
One of these days I gotta get to Rays.
Gosh it is like a song hey? :-)
Thanks for sharing guys.
Great job Izzy! Hoping one year to get to Rays myself
Seeing pics like these.....and reading the stories....only makes me want to go, more.
I have a goal of adding a hunt for a new critter each year, and this is definitely on my short list.
Thanks so much for sharing.....all.
jeff
Congrats Izzy, job well done. Great photos, glad you had a great time but hard to believe you wouldn't with Ray and Mike. Looking forward to my next trip there end of April.
ALDO
Aldo you right on about that.Even if you tried real hard not to have fun Big Ray would get in the way of that and make sure you did.Hes a good dude.
Nice one Izzy! And not one single "does this 46# bow make my butt look fat?" - oooops, I mean "Is 46# enough?" question in the whole 8 pages! Good shooting and real fine hog!
Nice pics and story Izzy. Sounds like a great hunt.
Nice HOG!
Nice pics an story Izzy. We have to hook up and go to a 3d and hassle Kevin. He got a new broomstick you know.

And lastly, our motley crew-
(http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d97/rickbutler693/Hog%20Heaven/HogCamp2010.jpg)
Izzy, Sean, Ray H., Me, Doug and Ray M.
I wasn't going to say anything, but since Shaun brought it up. Izzy what's up with shooting a girls bow at 47#s. My daughter shoots a 50# Bear Grizzly. You're a strapping big boy, put some butt in your bow! : ) Instead of ONLY penetrating most of the body length you could've shot all the way through and stuck your arrow into a Cypress tree.
Terry,Terry,Terry! I firmly believe that Jen has superhuman strength after seeing that back flip and shes mean enough to take on T-Rex with only a glass arrow and fishing line and turn him into boots and a casserole so its not fair to compare me to her! Besides Im drawing that perty lil bow bow to 50#s and after Rays broadhead sharpening lesson I could kill a rhino with my set up.
Izzy, good points (pun intended)! You do shoot that little bow awful good!
Jen had a bunch of boys over to the house not long ago and they went to our basement weight lifting set. Well, she sent them all home with their head hung low after her thrashing of them on the bench press. She is a fiesty little fart.
Good stuff...hope to get back over there myself soon.
Good looking hog. Understand Ray and the hogs have chased all the snakes out of those swamps. Reminds me of my time in Charleston and hunting the Francis Marion. Way to go guys. Thanks for sharing.
Ill be going back to my beloved sawmps in May 2011.Maybe Ill get lucky again but this time with a pair of copper heads added to the bag. I did look a bit but like he said, them hogs have a taste for snakes.
Come on Cuz, get those pics posted already. You gotta be done skinning that armadillo by now.
Alright Izz! I just booked Rick,Sean and I today also. It looks like it could be a yearly thing!
We kinda look like a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute band in that pic...
We could call ourselves Free Pig, Simple Hog or Curtis Swine.By the way fellas I googled Berien Springs from my house and it looks pretty doable.Ill keep you posted. :readit:
That'd be great Izzy!
izzy like the pic at the top of the header dont remmember the light spots on you? whos the friend standing behind you. tried the flag on my bow but having trouble getting good arrow flight kevin
Kevin, it aint the flag you always shoot like that.Thats why I took it easy on you at The Muzzy. ;)
Very Nice, don't know how I missed this thread!! Congrats bud! Shawn
Thanks Shawn, we need to haul you down there before too long.
Holy Pork Chops Izzy! That's one fine looking piggy ya got there... And with a girlie bow at that. You should be proud! ;)
