Well Pig Gig is over and there are still a few months before Bear Quest...so it's time to fool around with a new generation of hand forged broadheads. Over the past few seasons, I've made heads for hafting to wood shafts and ones with tangs to slide into carbon/aluminium shafts. They have proven to be very durable plus helping to fill some freezers for Team Tippit :)

In using high carbon steel, forging enables one to temper the steel so the points are hard enough to keep from bending but not too brittle to break. Forging also allows any weight to be reached. The problem is it takes a lot of time with multiple forging cessions to achieve those goals.
2010 Broadhead Quest:
1) Simplify weight reduction
2) Easy method to change arrow shafts
3) Still keep durability
I forged up a simple head without a tang. A drill press was used to get the desired weight. In this prototype, I've over drilled it to see if I can still keep durability. A steel broadhead adaptor was slotted and gel super glued to the broadhead.

Now will it hold up...not break at the drill holes, not come apart at the glue joint, and not to too nosy?
Torture Tests to Follow...tippit
Very nice. Wish i had those types of skills.
Lookin' good Jeff. Looking forward to the test results.
The first and second generations have held up very well for me.Extremely durable and easy to bring back the edge. Both have put meat in my freezer :) Thankfully unlike the broadheads I was testing in TX they have been recovered after the shot(s).
What is the weight of the third generation?
the first generation head you gave me has killed four hogs, Doc. Its heavy, but I shaved it on my auto body rasp to get it where I wanted it and single beveled it...and its tremendous. I don't need shaft inserts or weights...just load that bad boy up on the tip of a carbon and she's loaded for - well, anything!!!!
looks really good....can't wait to hear the test results.
That is nice looking head.
PV,
2010 version is 280gr. So with the aluminium insert it would be around 300gr up front. About the same as last years Mr Big broadhead...except a lot less work. The blade is thinner and longer than 2009 version so it has more inherent reasons built in for failure

Torture Test:
Everything worked out just fine. I decided to really push it by shooting into a rough cut true 1 inch oak board. No bending, breaking, or glue joint failure. I repeated the test three times and had to saw it out of the board each time. Might just have to make up a few more of these...Doc

Here's you 2nd generation after harvesting Mr Small.... (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Shortbldtr/bearQuestIII136.jpg)
It will be back in the quiver for round three with a certain bear come September......
What type of bevel are you going to use on the new head?
Cross posted and I see from your latest post your going with a double bevel.
Sorry I can't help with the sound testing but will be glad to do some serious testing with your
new design. No shipping required. :bigsmyl:
Very cool.
Mean looking head! Stands up to that timber nicely, shouldn't have any problems smashing some bone. Well Done
Thanks for all the kind comments.
PV...
The blade edge was too thin to use a single bevel...Oh Well they still seem to do the job with two edges  This was just a test head anyway.
As to noise, it was as quiet as a church mouse...for me! Little inside joke unless you've been in camp with me :biglaugh: Doc
:biglaugh: :biglaugh:
Doc,
I really enjoy you work, from Knives to Broadheads. Thanks for taking the time to share these with us....
Mark
That is my kind of broadhead...great work, Doc.

Sorry, wasn't sure if you turned your ears up or not.
Very cool Jeff!
That's a wicked looking head :scared:
OUTSTANDING work Doc bd
Geeze Doc I thought stone chips would have been flaking. Nice looking head
hormoan,
I just got my flaking tools and they will be flying. Figured I'd better get a sharp steel point first as I don't know if the flint will ever look like an arrow point  Doc
Jeff, you are definately THE man! That BH looks indestructible. Mr. Big will be in Mr. Big trouble when you get to bear camp. I hope he gets his affairs in order because his days are obviously numbered :readit:  !
Claudia

Man I wish I could do that. Those holes look like you could put a nail in one and use a crow bar to pop it out of the wood. Keep at it and continue to let us see what you are doing. This is a fun topic. Thanks, Gary
Jeff,
Excellent work!
When wiil they be for sale?
Doc, That is a cool looking head! What spine and length arrow are you using?
Benjy

Vermonster,
That's the one test where my broadheads have failed...New England stone walls. Don't ask me how a I know except to say there is one happy buck still chasing the girls :knothead: Broadhead was re-ground to a rounded point and sent to Shawn's Bunny Hunt as a Bunny Point...Doc
I'll check my calender and to make sure I'm here. I've got to go to Chicago for 2 weeks of training sometime in the next couple of months. I'll know next week.
