I helped Mr. Hill get registered last night and thought I would welcome him to the forums.
Thanks,
Joshua
Hello Jerry,
How have you been? Welcome.
Welcome Jerry
Wellcome to the forum jerry. nice to see you here. you must remember i sent you a bow to be refinish it had socks on the bow. cheers Marlon
Best traditional times i ever had when a bunch of us from Ga would go to Jerry's every summer in mid 90's for the Howard Hill World Championships. Jerry ,you had the funniest tournament ever put on. The skunk on the roller coaster and 120 yard elephant were 2 that come to mind..oh turbo turkey and the 120# beaver in the ditch..There has not been a shoot like it since.. i am so glad i got to experence that.......i even got a porcelain elephant one year?!! welcome
joebuck,
You can't forget Tembo the elephant coming down through the dogwoods either at you, having to shoot then jump out of the way before getting tusked!! Good times for sure !! I sure loved trying to hit that skunk more than once in a row. It even had Hood's # good a shot as he was. Welcome Jerry... hope life's treating you good !
Welcome Jerry!
That Skunk, skunked me several times. I also skunked the Skunk a couple times.
I remember, very fondly, the time spent on your range. I was always with friends, even if I didn't know them at the time, they became friends during the shoots.
I went to the last one with my friend, Russ Dickson. He and his wife are now gone, but I'll always have the memories.
You always treated me with friendship and I want you to know how much it meant to me.
I often got to talk to your dad,I think it was, I really enjoyed the talks.
Hope all is well in your camp.
Johnny/JAG
Welcome to the gang. And welcome from the canadian frozen north
Jer bear
Howdy Jerry.Wandered around the swamp half lost a lot of times with one of your longbows in hand.Good times for sure.RC
Welcome Jerry!!!!! You're gonna love this site. You will even find a few Howard Hill junkies lurking around as well.....
justin
Hill Junkies Here?
You must be kidding.
There are no Hill Junkies here.
(. . .although I have to admit, there may a few absolutely rabid, die-hard Hill FANATICS.)
The rest of us are, well, just avid Hill freaks. Even our therapists will admit that we're almost normal. . .
Rik, who you callin rabid! :goldtooth: :goldtooth:
Jerry, that shoot was the best there ever was! I never got a trophy (managed 4th twice!), but my son won the youth recurve division and my ex won the lady's selfbow division in the same year. My son, 32 now, still treasures that trophy. We had a blast! It drew the best archers from all over the country.
Stinson taught me how to put my points on so they wouldn't come off the first year I attended, and I've related the technique a couple of times for people here.
Never did score on that blasted skunk...
welcome aboard Jerry ... yeah there are few Hill " freaks" around here . Many a critter got chased by me here in Oz with one your bows . great to have you here .
Ben
Welcome Jerry. We have a lot of Howard Hill wantabes here. I think of Hill, Bear, Pearson, Hood, and Ishi as the big five of traditional archery. (With me it would be big six.) It's a great site and know you will enjoy it.
Hey Jerry remember this?.... the night before the Longbow Championship shoot in 1980.

Great picture. It's weird that I don't really know what Jerry looks like. This is only the second pic that I have seen of him. Thank you Mr. Ron for that picture. Where was this taken?
Thanks,

Glad to see you here Jerry. It seems like yesterday that we floated the Cahaba. Good times we had. Your friend. David Raia

This was taken at Jerrys family home near Wilsonville Al. There was many pictures of Howard on the walls as well his bows and other equipment. I got to try on Howards glove and felt a tingle go up my arm. I said, "Howard just told me that I'm going to win the shoot"....which I did.

Welcome Jerry to the TradGang,
Reading Joebuck's thread brought back a flood of memories as a bunch of us would come over to Alabama from Georgia to shoot. Good times were had by all!! :bigsmyl:
Jerry took us on a tour one year, loaded everyone in a church bus. This is the front of the last house where Howard lived on Howard Hill Dr. That's Jerry in the middle next to the pillar standing by Mrs Ben Pearson. I'm on the far left.

I used to love riding that barrel and shootin' at the same time...and the charging boar from atop the stump..and the bear climbing up the tree..and and and!
Welcome Jerry

Ron,
Wasn't them the years when "OP" brand shorts were in? :scared:
Welcome Jerry. I myself am a relative newbie here, as well as to Traditional Archery. Great site here to learn from and the experience and knowledge just increased with your joining.

Shot my first buck with a bow with one of your longbows, still have it. That was many, many, years ago. Welcome.

Ron, Do you know the fellow in the second row that is kneeling/squatting next to the young boy? I am thinking he may be a friend of mine I have made a couple of hunts with recently but we all look a little different now. If so I would sure like to get a larger size of this picture to show him.
Thanks, Tommy

I don't recognize him Tommy, sorry.
Does anyone recognize the tall guy in the light blue shirt?....That's my good friend John Lee, the man who knew Howard and made the last two bows that he shot. The older Gentleman sitting next to the gray haired lady is Bob Palmater. Bob was also a very good friend and a huge Howard Hill fan. Bob passed away five years ago. The fellow on the far right is Lynn Clark. Lynn was a bowyer and even though he wasn't a big man. he shot a 90# bow. Next to him is Maurice cash. I met Maurice years ago when I thought I was the only one in Michigan that shot a longbow. It was at a shoot at the Detroit Archers, Fred Bears old archery club. I was walking through a bunch of compound shooters near the club house when out of the crowd coming towards me was this guy with a back quiver and a longbow... :scared: ..it was like meeting a brother that you didn't know you had and it was the beginning of a long friendship.
Ron, Great group photo... I didnt know the guy in the ligth blue shirt was John.....

Cody
didn't Dicky Betts shoot and play there one year?
Ron, Thanks for posting those pictures, what a great piece of history you shared, nice legs too :)
I used to hang out with Jerry at a few sporting shows back in the nineties. He would be the only one there selling Trad gear.
The thread was pretty old but so were the pictures, they are worth a second look, great piece of history.
I found another picture taken the same day of the group tour. The post are supports for Howards target bails in his yard.
Hey Ron is all that still there? When I get to Georgia in a few months I want to go to Alabama and would like to check that place out.
Ron, thanks again!
Tim, the house is probably still there but the target post are probably gone. When I was there in 80-81 Howard had only been gone for 5 or 6 years. The wood of the post had already started to rot and crumble. I remember taking a small piece of the wood and putting it in the bottom of my back quiver for luck.
Thats a shame it was rotting away, cool you got a piece. That would be cool to integrate it into a bow handle. Does the archery club still stand?
I pm'ed Jerry back in mid-Janurary and still have no response. Anyone heard how Jerry's doing?
Hope all is well with him.
Jerry was selling some quivers and arm guards on **** last month. Someone asked how he was doing and Jerry said that he survived a bypass. I hope he is recovering fine.
I hope this helps,
Darren
