Title: NEED SOME ADVICE
Post by: Flatshooter on February 15, 2010, 02:20:00 PM
I have removed names on used bow in the past with varying results. In the best situation the name was removed rather easily with 000 steel wool and then finished with a light coat of poly. I believe Black Widow uses a marine grade epoxy finish on their bows. Has anyone attempted to remove a name on a BW? How did you do it? Suggestions would be very much appreciiated.

If you check their website, they sell a red spider sticker that will cover a name on the bow.

Let's see what comes up mrpenguin. Not interested in a red sticker to cover a name. If I can't get a good result because of their finish I have a backup idea. I have backed a number of bows in snakeskin. I was thinking of doing something with a decorative snakeskin cover. That would be unique, haven't heard of anyone doing that.

Don't know specifically about BW, but most bowyers write the name and other info on top of the primary finish and then just go over it lightly with additional finish.  Gentle sanding with 220, then perhaps 300 or 400 grit should remove it.  Use a small block so you don't get an indentation from your finger(s).  Then a few coats of your favorite finish and you're done. Good luck.

I have refinished several Widows. That stuff is tuff! There is an abrasive sponge wheel for Dremmel that is great for getting through the first few layers. DO NOT use a standard abrasive or sanding wheel... too aggressive. The one I'm talking about is like a very soft sponge that contains abbrasive grit. It makes quick work of epoxy finishes, yet doesnt threaten the bow itelf (as long as you pay attention!). As soon as you can tell the finish is breaking up, stop with the dremmel and move to steel wool and laquer thinner. You'll get that name off in no time.
