Title: Is this an unnatural act?
Post by: ballen28115 on February 12, 2010, 05:10:00 PM
I picked up some LW feathers in a trade a while back and I only have a RW clamp for my Bitz.  Obviously, you can make them stick to the shaft, but how do you think they will fly?

I fletched some right wing feathers in a left wing clamp by mistake. They shot just fine.

I wonder about the responses sometimes. How may people who said it wouldn't work have actually goofed up, repeated my error and have first hand knowledge, or just "think" it won't work.

I did the same thing early on in my arrow building. Those arrows were loud! I think the air didn't slide off the feather in the same way than if you were to fletch them with RW.

I had the same experience.  Wasn't paying attention when I fletched them up; but noticed they were pretty darn loud when shooting and upon further inspection noticed I had RW featheres fletched in a LW jig with some pretty good helical.    :knothead:

Don't you think they look sort of odd? Whew......

I think that is why they make both clamps, straight is less of a problem.

I did a whole dozen once, with my Bitzenburger jig. Never realized it until I went to do another batch of arrows. To be honest, I'm not sure which batch they were, but obviously never noticed anything different. I would guess as long as you don't have a wicked radical offfset angle, you could get away with it. I would think maybe you'd get a little bit more drag, and possibly more noise. I'll have to go look through my arrows and see if I can find that bunch.

It won't make a difference. Never has on mine.

Use a straight clamp and just angle it a bit for right or left,I did this till I got the clamp I needed! Works just fine!

I've done it back when and they flew fine.

As long as you don't put them in the clamp backwards you will not know the difference. Depending on the color they will likely have a very different hue to them-very cool.

Left wing feathers put on with a right hand jig works (voice of experince here).
